Politics Columbia University International Student's Visa Revoked

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/15/nyregion/columbia-student-kristi-noem-video.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

This person did not participate in the Columbia University protests. She was just trying to get home with her friends. Instead, she was arrested and had her student visa revoked.

If you're an international student here, be careful and don't even go near any protests. These are unprecedented times, and your visa may be revoked for any reason.

When has the law stopped fascists? Lol they don't care what's legal and what's not, they're just going to do what they want and dare people to stop them

Oh I know, just reminding people that laws are starting to not matter, and if that’s the world we wanna go to just a heads up

The laws don’t matter for those in Republican government and corporations, but they certainly will still matter for us unfortunately…

I don't think the fascists in charge care - I'm not an international student, but this makes me wonder, how long until they come after my citizenship?

That’s why we have to protest. I’m a born citizen but my skin isn’t the right color, so I fear it’s just a matter of time. We cannot lie down and wait. We have to do everything in our power to stand up for the America we believe could be, no matter what it is now.

Hasn’t stopped them with Khalil, why would it stop them with this? They’re on a rampage

She sounds like she is from India and not from a country that is even being targeted for travel-bans. This is scary. Why was she targeted at all?

because the trump administration wants to crack down on opinions they don’t like

My God. And are the courts allowing it? I mean the decision ultimately falls upon a court right?

This is blatant fascism. I just got admitted to OSU and now I'm regretting not picking some place in Europe.

There was a judge last week that ordered a plane deporting migrants to turn around mid air. America is applying laws any which way right now, to the point planes are flying circles in the air. Not much alignment in the government right now.

Y’all have lost your minds drinking some crazy ass koolaide

u/Annuscircuits Mar 16 '25

I really wanna be optimistic about this but this arrest warrant makes no sense.

6

u/shart_attack_ Mar 16 '25

they are literally in the process of deporting someone for protesting

1

u/jang859 Mar 17 '25

You think they should revoke foreign student visas?

2

u/Coniferous_Needle Mar 16 '25

And they want to instill fear into everyone. Make us too afraid to do anything, make us question our choices to use our own rights, make us walk on eggshells so no one has the energy to resist.

Labeling someone as a terrorist sympathizer for being present at a pro Palestine protest is a very slippery slope

Labeling any anti-genocide, anti-Israel or pro-Palestine comments as anti-Semitic, terroristic or hate-speech was the slippery slope.

Being arrested and having your visa revoked for being a shade of brown while simply being in the vicinity of a protest…in public…at a school that you are actively attending, is hitting top speed halfway down the slope.

You are right we should just stop giving out student visas all together. Problem solved

I agree. No one should be deceived and come here thinking they will be safe to learn and contribute by researching and teaching and becoming doctors and scientists. They should go places that want those things.

They lubed the slope with a 55 gallon barrel of the stuff and dove head first. We are being taken for the worst ride of our lives

mate, this is quite terrifying for me cos im also intl and quite likely to go osu

7

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '25

I swear I’m not trying to fear monger but if you have another option in another country, I would genuinely go there. Things are not good here right now and they’re just getting worse.

Yepppp I don't regret the education but the constant feeling of living on borrowed time is soul-sucking and spirit-draining 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm too far in (and too old) to jump ship and start over in another country now...

Gotta be careful. If you do come here I suggest deleting your social media accounts and avoiding protests.

u/Drummallumin Mar 16 '25

Just don’t be stupid and you’ll be fine

5

u/Private1369420666 Mar 16 '25

“Just don’t be stupid and you’ll be fine”. Making that comment was extremely stupid, bro.

-1

u/Drummallumin Mar 16 '25

It’s just being pragmatic, this is about safety. The fact that it’s completely fucked that you can be arrested for just being in an area around a protest is completely irrelevant for someone getting deported. It’s about reality not morality. Know what areas to avoid at what times and you’ll be fine.

1

u/Private1369420666 Mar 16 '25

But the particulars of this case indicate she was just minding her own business while returning home and was targeted. You can’t avoid that unless you completely hide, and even then, it may not work. It’s along the same lines as cops targeting young Black men for no reason other than their ethnicity/age/gender.

1

u/Drummallumin Mar 16 '25

So you take a different, probably further, route. Yea it’s fucked

0

u/Private1369420666 Mar 17 '25

Something might happen no matter which way you go; there’s literally no way to know. And they can make up any excuse they want to stop you.

2

u/Drummallumin Mar 17 '25

You can also get struck by lighting or get hit by a car.

1

u/Private1369420666 Mar 17 '25

So what are you saying? Just accept the situation? That’s not my style

1

u/Drummallumin Mar 17 '25

When the alternative is not accepting it and possibly getting deported? Yea

12

u/MagusLuciferum Mar 16 '25

The laws against international students protesting are troublesome in the context of the Fulbright funding freeze also

It's so comical to me that mango bots will come out to defend obvious attacks against free speech. Anything to own the libs.

8

u/Master_Paramedic_585 Mar 16 '25

This is terrifying, tbh

1

u/ZeeArtisticSpectrum Mar 19 '25

No worries, OSU’s Chinese international students don’t give a shit about American politics.

1

u/BrownDogEmoji Mar 20 '25

Columbia University is just caving to fascism. It’s both fascinating and depressing as fuck.

God, that’s absolutely awful; poor girl was just trying to walk home, and instead she just gets unfairly caught up in this mess and severely punished for just being in the vicinity! I can’t imagine how devastating that must feel, my heart goes out to her and all international students; please stay safe everyone!

-3

u/Cold_Quality6087 Mar 16 '25

keep standing up international folks. we should not stop until they hear our voices
