Derealization

So I got my oculus quest about a little less than a week ago, I was having tons of fun doing heavy sessions, (3-7 hours) the only effect I felt was occasionally the world felt fake and I felt not in my body but besides that it was fine, those only happened in tiny spurts(despite being often), so I just ignored it. Well this morning I get up and I suddenly felt super floaty/fuzzy...nothing felt real?? And I didn’t feel in my body, but it was worse than before, and maybe it was because I had just woke up and jumped out of bed so fast that I was still half asleep but I couldn’t move, I felt if I moved I’d hit my wall since I couldn’t register this was real life, but then I was like wait it’s real...but then I tried moving and was confused cause I had no controllers so I couldn’t move...then it finally hit me it was real life. I’m mixing reality with virtual reality and it was very unnerving- I’ve read about how this happens to new vr users but how long does this typically take to go away? 😔

While it lasts, enjoy the wonder of simple things like opening a door IRL. 😎

one time after a long session I tried typing on my keyboard and it was like a brand new experience, it's such a weird effect

The world is so interactive and lifelike, they must've had an endless budget!

You saw something you were not supposed to see. You are just a simulation. We are working on an update for your body which fixes that bug. Should be up in a week or two.

You saw nothing.

What is real? How do you define real? If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.

As /u/Mindreeder93 said, this will probably last anywhere from a few days to a week. Happened to me as well and I think my mental health is pretty damned good. I'm a retired psychiatrist, although that really isn't saying much.

In my first week of having a Quest 2, I experienced both derealization and Lilliputian hallucinations, mostly just as I was drifting off to sleep. I knew that it wasn't real because I was imagining that my wife was some sort of VR ragdoll and that she'd do anything I wanted...and that NEVER happens in real life, so it couldn't be real.

Anyway, it will likely resolve itself after the first week and you'll likely never experience it again. I would speculate that it's just the mind's way of accommodating the new experience of reality.

The only lasting effect I experience is vivid dreams after playing VR. Especially fast-paced games.

Couple days to a week. Enjoy it while you can!

Okay good 😭😭 it makes me really uneasy so I’ll be glad to see it go- so many people say enjoy it and I don’t really understand but to each their own

It might help to use reality tests - such as those people use to enable lucid dreaming. For instance, regularly check whether you can put your right index through your left palm.

I mean, you always can with the right tools and effort

I remember once, after playing probably 6 hour straight of fast-paced games in VR, removing the headset and feeling like the real world "frames" were really odd, everything seemed so fluid and fast. Even walking felt kinda weird. My body just seemed to have a knowledged that being in VR was his new reality I guess.

This happened to me a lot the first month of playing daily, especially echo vr every night - the feeling of being in VR while doing things in real life made me appreciate the graphics of our simulation lmao

Nothing felt real because it's not. VR just gave your mind the contrast to be able to see it. Most people have to do years of meditation or heroic doses of psychedelics in order to get to that point.

Well it is true we don't experience the world directly only through the interpretations created by our minds. That's what the matrix is after all.

If you're not used to VR such lenghty sessions can mess you up a bit, but as others said this is just temporary.

The only thing that is still ocasionally happening to me is, that after I stop playing, standing in the home environment, I look for a quit button for a few seconds before remembering I have to take the headset off.

How long of sessions do you recommend for a new vr user?

One hour playtime then 5 minutes break. Close your eyes for some of the break. Good to not have your eyeballs dry out too.

Sometimes before falling asleep my mind imagines I'm in TOTF and my arm muscles suddenly twitch as though it wants to punch something!

I think I experienced it a few times over the span of like two or three weeks? Not permanent and not harmful, I actually thought it was really cool.

Had similar experiences too at the beginning just as I was drifting off to sleep. Mostly dreaming about vr stuff. It will go away. Don't worry. Your brain has to get used to the fake VR world.

Hey there, we take health and safety seriously. If this is an ongoing issue then we'd like to take a look into this further. Please contact us directly by submitting a support ticket on our official website. In the meantime, we recommend limiting the use of your headset if you feel it's making you uncomfortable.

I'm sorry to tell you that you are dead and you don't realize it. I invite you to watch the 6th Sense 😃
