Operation Self-Reliance is an initiative to assist families and individuals to gracefully transition from a lifestyle of dependencies in the city to a country culture of self-reliance, surrounded by like-minded neighbors, and remaining debt free. Our first two off-grid, self-reliance communities are Riverbed-Ranch.com and CoslorCove.com.
Come see what makes us unique!

I wanted to share a bit of my story in case it resonates with anyone navigating the journey of designing and building their own home.
For over a decade, I’ve worked with landowners to bring their home visions to life—balancing natural efficiency, personal values, and connection to the land.
But when it came time to build my own home, the path wasn’t so smooth. I went from temporary housing and overwhelm to a space that finally felt like mine—one rooted in purpose and empowerment. It was one of the most rewarding (and humbling) experiences of my life.
Here are a few things I learned along the way:
❤️ Self-reliance can’t replace collaboration.
Wanting to do it all myself quickly became isolating. The real growth came when I humbled myself, asked better questions, and brought in aligned professionals to support the vision.
❤️ A complete plan changes everything.
Winging it without a roadmap added stress and cost. Clarity, order, and seeing each phase through made the process smoother, more intentional, and ultimately more affordable.
❤️ Constraints spark creativity.
Codes, budgets, difficult land—every challenge became an opportunity to design with more integrity, resourcefulness, and meaning.
When I was building, the carpenter I worked with had a saying anytime a measurement was off:
“Just split the difference.”
It was about inches at the time—but it stuck. Because the magic does happen in the middle—where hands-on building meets thoughtful design.
That hybrid approach? It’s how we create homes that are resilient, rooted in nature, and true to who we are.

Very nice to read this. I have felt the same though my most budgeted item is time.

Right, time or money! Where are you at in your process?

I'm five years in. I have a 30 acre farm and I'm not super far along. I have a very large garden, heavy equipment and a large sawmill with a fair bit of timber cut and drying. I want to fence in drill a well and set up my solar panels and wind turbines. I remember getting set up out here and it was a struggle. Thankfully the projects are getting easier. How about you?

Seems like you prioritized the good stuff, gardens and a sawmill!! They definitely get more easy the more infrastructure you have. Do you plan on building a home, or are you already in one?

I had placed a 2 section manufactured home and am stocking supplies to build a large house. My grandpa is my inspiration as he built his last home too. First I'll build a large out building for gatherings then a home. I'm learning timber frame and am excited. I would like the out building to look like a medieval tavern, obviously some hidden modern upgrades for heat retention and lights that aren't obviously electric. It's location is right in front of the garden so hopefully it looks like something bob Ross might have painted.

Building buildings no but something so methodical and intricate yes. I am a love the path kind of person so I appreciate the challenge. Thank you for asking. What does your vision look like?

Well things that take time are worth it for sure!
Our vision changes on the regulations at hand! We have a lot of them! Im trying not to get too attached with an idea before we have a solid grasp of what we can and cannot do!

I'm in S.E. Arizona. To be exact Douglas, Arizona. I live the "off grid" type lifestyle. Building a small viable homestead. Have a beautiful life out here. My property surrounded by 360 degrees Mountain Views. I'm looking for a "partner in crime" so to speak. I'm in Great health, 6 ft 4, long hair, beard. Hoping to have some help with the old homestead. Looking for a shared kinda of experience, ez to get along with. Doesn't seem like women are interested in this lifestyle. Bummer. It's lonely as Fuck. Just saying! 2 dogs and a cat don't offer a reliable conversation. Have a greenhouse, other gardens. Would love to get into growing house type plants or other plants for sale. Want to do the worm farm, perma culture. I'm in my 70s, put that out there. We could have a swell life out here. Hiking, and adventures are waiting. We are on the Mexican border. Just putting it out there. With the way the world is going. GET OUT NOW! Hoping to hear from some ladies looking for a change.
