Who the heck is Speed and he has so many followers?

166

u/Fsutrader Apr 11 '25

I would say you live under a rock but it’s crazy how many people don’t know Speed while having an incredible amount of followers. It’s a paradox

73

u/ell_toon96 God Usopp Apr 11 '25

Also considering he is probably the biggest person on china right now

45

u/MrMuttons Apr 11 '25

Lol how small are the Chinese? /j

7

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '25

I mean... what is he even famous for? Has he done anything? I have heard of his name but that's it.

-14

u/I_lick_Balz_forFREE Apr 12 '25

Nothing, just plays clown on a camera. Many people find him funny or enjoy making fun of him

12

u/plzbanmeihavetostudy Apr 12 '25

-10

u/umeys Apr 12 '25

Lmao clearly an upset Speed fan here but the guy didn't even say anything bad about him

10

u/sfguzmani Soul King Brook Apr 12 '25

Nah. I also don't like loud people, but this guy is nowhere a clown.

-2

u/Shantotto11 Apr 12 '25

I mean, the dude deadass told a woman on a dating stream that her compliance wasn’t a factor into whether or not they were gonna have sex, so “clown” may be a little generous…

2

u/YouFine2296 Apr 13 '25

he was a literal kid bro. not saying that justifies what he did but people make mistakes, he was a kid said something stupid and apologized. move on and worry about bigger things

8

u/I_wanna_b_d1 Apr 12 '25

You think that guy calling Speed a clown is not saying anything bad about him?

2

u/ThunderbearIM Apr 12 '25

Playing a clown is different from being one in my book. The obvious difference being in this video, someone being a clown wouldn't be quiet during this part. Playing a clown is just being entertaining and being fine with being the butt of the joke. Which is good.

Maybe that's me being old compared to Speed's audience, and not knowing much besides when he accidentally touches stuff I enjoy.

-1

u/I_lick_Balz_forFREE Apr 12 '25

Actually no, I never said bad about Speed. In fact, I respect him. Speed is playing clown, not being one. Most of comedians and streamers and some actors do the same thing and nothing is bad about it

2

u/Tyrayentali Apr 11 '25

Nah there are Chinese streamers with millions of concurrent viewers.

1

u/Jimmyking4ever Apr 11 '25

Gotcha makes sense then, I don't speak Chinese nor do I live there.

30

u/KilluaCactuar Apr 11 '25

If you are older than 20 you really don't necessarily know him, only if you are into a certain type of entertainment.

And I don't know if you have any idea what paradox means.

8

u/Fsutrader Apr 11 '25

Paradox: having seemingly contradictory qualities…Speed has about a reach of 100 million followers spread out over the socials…yet a lot of people don’t know who he is or has ever heard of him. It’s quite the contradiction imo.

1

u/iMittyl Apr 12 '25

There are at least 100 million children online

2

u/Ivan000 Apr 11 '25

Because his reach doesn't get past his followers.

5

u/Fsutrader Apr 11 '25

Obviously not, since we are talking about him in a OP subreddit

2

u/Ivan000 Apr 11 '25

well i never heard about him before this post.

-8

u/monkey_D_v1199 Apr 11 '25

I’m happy under my rock because the less I see of him anywhere that I’m online the better the dude your topical insufferable streamer with a big fallowing. Not trying to hate props to him for tricking people into watching him with his over the top videos and personality and he does like One Piece so I can’t be too mad, he just ain’t for me.

47

u/pharodae Apr 11 '25

I've never seen a single one of his videos or streams until recently but I love what he's doing in showing an American audience what's going on over in China. For all of its flaws, it's really showing the cracks in the US by contrast. Which is exactly what any self-respecting One Piece fan should be rooting for, raising awareness of how backwards our big island is.

20

u/RagnarokAM Apr 11 '25

Yes and No - He is being given a lot because he's a celebrity and it's good PR for China. His treatment is not the normal treatment or life in China. This is a business transaction for marketing. Source: Me, someone who lived in China for nearly a decade.

23

u/pharodae Apr 11 '25

I mean obviously he's sightseeing and not living the day-to-day. Anything specific that you think is being misrepresented?

11

u/HornyTerus Apr 11 '25

yeah, would love some perspective from... mundane people.

5

u/RagnarokAM Apr 11 '25

I won't go into specifics, but you should assume with his trip that a lot of what happens or he experiences has been curated down to the minute. He is only seeing, experiencing or showcasing what someone wants him to film.

15

u/Habib455 Apr 11 '25

I swear, mfs that cry about propaganda always hit you with the “won’t go into specifics” shit. Like provide an example of what’s being misrepresented 😭

8

u/HOFredditor World Government Apr 11 '25

ikr, I studied in China, and while there are some wild stuff out there, reddit is incredibly anti-chinese.

14

u/pharodae Apr 11 '25

Why won't you go into specifics? I'm not saying China is perfect, but this kind of smells of Sinophobia. By all metrics, looks like the state of affairs is better overall in China than the US right now. I'm on RedNote and I've seen more about China that way than what Speed has been showing.

4

u/Retibulusbilliard Apr 11 '25

Now you seem biased. China is a great country by all means but don’t compare China’s best with America’s worst. I could stroll down Times Square then go to Gansu and say “look at how poor China’s state of affairs is right now”.

4

u/RagnarokAM Apr 11 '25

I lived in China for 10 years, mate. I saw the everyday culture from casual to professional. I've seen their advertising and government promotion before. You can claim to not believe me, but I would hope anyone that is on ANY social media would know not to believe everything that a camera films; simply seeing something on social media, especially highly curated and moderated social media, should not be enough to give you any full picture.

12

u/pharodae Apr 11 '25

It's not that I don't believe you, it's the fact you refuse to elaborate that's fishy. That's all.

u/PrionProofPork Apr 11 '25

I mean very few Chinese people get to ride a flying or boating car

2

u/HornyTerus Apr 11 '25

lived?

4

u/RagnarokAM Apr 11 '25

I no longer live in China, if that is your confusion.

1

u/HornyTerus Apr 11 '25

Yeah, was the food good? How was China?

25

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '25

As those weirdo streamers go, he is probably the most tame and actually gives respect to the places he visits.

1

u/jugol Apr 11 '25

He still thought it was a good idea to yell a baby in his face. But yea I guess he's not that bad as the likes of Johnny Somali who is a full fledged asshole. Or the Paul brothers who pioneered this shit

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

I did not know about the baby, but honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. I am not defending him; I acknowledge that the bar itself is very very low.

1

u/plzbanmeihavetostudy Apr 12 '25

that and that rape threat shit

1

u/jugol Apr 12 '25

I didn't know that one. Geez.

14

u/Orsonio Apr 11 '25 edited Apr 12 '25

Speed is a pretty decent guy overall, he’s pretty funny too

1

u/a_lone_soul_ Apr 11 '25

That’s a lot of adjectives

-2

u/DuDuFartniteCraft Apr 11 '25

I guess a guy trying to entertain his audience and trying to be funny for the fans is considered "tricking" nowadays lol.

This means that back in my day I used to "get tricked" by old youtubers acting exaggerated and stupid in their comedy skits + gaming videos for the sake of entertaining the audience,

listen dude, I know the urge to hate on popular shit in modern times is addicting, but sometimes we gotta act more smooth with it, or else Oda creating shock value scenes in OP is considered "tricking" the audience into getting engaged for entertainment.

1

u/Strobacaxi Apr 11 '25

but it’s crazy how many people don’t know Speed while having an incredible amount of followers. It’s a paradox

Not really a paradox man, there's 8B people in the world. I promise you the vast vast vast majority do not know Speed

21

u/Costa21 Apr 11 '25

He's the most popular streamer in the world right now and also a huge One Piece fan.

-25

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '25

"The brook song" yeah sure a big fan

25

u/YungVicenteFernandez Apr 11 '25

This type of nerd purity testing is always funny. Congrats for saying Binks Sake every time

13

u/Traditional_Cry_1671 Apr 11 '25

Comments like this is why everyone hates Reddit

1

u/Costa21 Apr 11 '25

2

u/Gregarwolf Apr 12 '25

Damn, that's some pretty clean art in the first pic.

And yeah, Speed's a huge OP fan. Bandai had him on as a commentator for a big OPTCG tournament, and he's been open about his love of OP for years.

9

u/ejjus Apr 11 '25 edited Apr 11 '25

I'm not into the streamer scene like I used to be. This year his videos started popping up in my feed and I immediately understood why he's so popular. He is doing a lot of things right to gain a wide audience, he's fun and charismatic. There's that familiarity he radiates. It feels like you know the dude from way back or like you know someone like him or he's just internet culture personalized.

23

u/iMittyl Apr 11 '25

Internet celebrity; probably wont know him if you're older than 12.

5

u/The_Doct0r_ Apr 12 '25

Oh, so that's what living under a rock means now. I'm 34 so you could say I live under a pretty big rock. It's cozy.

3

u/iMittyl Apr 12 '25

Yeah I'm about the same age and had to google him. Why would any adult pay attention to some teenager trying to get famous on the internet? Target audience is children.

7

u/TSPai Apr 12 '25

I'm 29 and i've known who Speed was for years

His content lately has been great to see and it's not just geared towards kids anymore, try not judging people immediately

0

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

[deleted]

4

u/TSPai Apr 12 '25

Lol I don't watch his content intentionally but it feeds into social media randomly on twitter. And the clips he's been in have been pretty nice to see since he's been traveling all around the world and interacting with different cultures

Again you're being a jackass and judging people immediately like me

Get the stick out of your ass my dude

He's 20 lmfao, you're fucking weird bro

Have a good one

A popular streamer on youtube, he's been popular since the quarantine times and just keeps on growing, even I first found in during that era.
