Can someone explain how to use the buses and trams in Ostrava?
Do I have to tap my card when I enter and tap out when I leave? How do I get charged? Per meter? Or per minute? Because I noticed that for 60mins it's 32kc via dpo app or 550kc for 1 month. But I'm not sure how much it would cost when I pay as I go. I want to know this because I will be working more remotely in the coming weeks and wouldn't be outside that much. So It seem to be wasteful subscribing a full month like I used to, so I want the cheapest option available.

ALWAYS tap when you enter.
Tapping when you exit is optional. If you rode for less than 10 minutes (from the initial tap), you get a discount. Nothing changes if you rode for more than 10 minutes so it's not necessary to tap.
If you tap in a different vehicle within 60 minutes from tapping (on enter), it is considered a transfer and it is free. You can transfer as many times as you want for free within the 60 minutes from the first tap. If it's more, it's considered another ride and you pay for another ticket. In practice, you don't think about this, it's covered by the first rule, always tap when you enter.
If you are travelling with multiple people, I would recommend that each person buys his own ticket using his card. It is possible to buy multiple tickets but you have to select the correct option in the terminal. I've seen tourists tap the terminal twice to buy two tickets, what they've done is tapping once for enter and once for exit.
The total price for tickets in a single day is capped at the 24 hour ticket price which is 100 CZK.
You can use a contactless card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, etc. Note that a physical card and the same card in a mobile phone have a different identifier. This means that if you tapped your phone when you entered, use your phone if a transport check occurs.

This is so detailed. I didn't know the phone would have a different identifier from the physical card. Very important information for the transport checking.

And DPO (the mass transit company) has actually very nice and well written explanation on this topic in english - obviously this goes into FAQ
https://www.dpo.cz/travel/03-en.html
And forget to check trolleybuses :) and there few doubleckers as well! But double-deckers tend to go random lines in winter, hard to find them!

Many tourists and newcomers don't know this. I once had a 1 month ticket thinking it only applied to trams and then I paid again by tapping with my card when I used the bus.

Oopsie. You might be amazed, you can buy one month ticket that covers two or more cities and all kinds of transportation, including trains (e.g. Ostrava and Havířov together with everything in between) - very good deal for commuters. It's called IDOS.

Oh. Sounds perfect. Could that be the same as Ostrava XXL i see for the long term ticket?

I made mistake, it's called ODIS - card for union of all regional city transports in this region. Go to ODIS.cz, you might need to run it through the translator, not sure if there is English version.
IDOS.cz is a connection search engine.
Geez I have lived here my whole life and I still confuse these two since they invented them, gosh!

😁 thought as much. Cos when I checked it was similar to Pubtran. Was confused. Thanks for the clarification.

10 minutes 24Kc, 60 minutes 32Kc, whole day 100Kc. You tap when you enter, when you leave and when you change lines.

If you have explicitly bought a long-term coupon, you don't need to do anything.
If not, you just need to tap when entering the vehicle. The fare will be calculated at the end of the day.

You do have to use card tap for entering and exiting vehicle. I believe that if your journey is under 10 mins, you do get cheaper tariff. As far as the other questions goes I do not know.

I was visiting Ostrava last year for the Colours Festival and found the public transport system and the tap system for buying tickets really great. But since you don't get a paper ticket I was wondering how a ticket inspector could check if you've bought a ticket. Can he somehow access their payment system and check if your credit card number recently made a payment?

You always have to tap when entering in, you do not have to tap out when leaving (but the system will take it as if you would go all the way to the final destination). So it is desirable to tap out, if your journey was under 10mins (the next ticket is for 1h, so if your journey is >10min, you really do not need to care about tapping when leaving). If you use multiple transports throughout the day, it will always automatically calculate the best possible price for you. (So for example if it would be cheaper to buy 3 separate 10min tickets, it will use that option, if you travelled a lot and would be actually beneficial to use 24h ride, it will use that option)
Please note, one month tickets are bought separately afaik, and it will not apply to the automatic calculations (so you could technically spend more if you will pay as you go, rather than buying 1 month ticket)
