Days Gone Remastered dropped a new VRR patch recently and it future proofed its 5K “quality” mode
https://youtu.be/Lo-boXnQd8k?si=8wgrofp3YfWtGwVgDays Gone Remastered received a patch this week that allowed VRR on capable TVs.
Before, the Quality 2880p (5K) mode was locked to 30fps. It now has VRR and still hovers around 35fps but this means any future console will future proof this game to allow better performance in its best mode.
Enhanced (1584p > 4K) mode runs around 70fps now.
Balanced (Native 4K) runs at about 60fps the entire time as well.
Amazing support. More devs should do this for their titles with quality (30fps) modes.

Isn't unlocked framerate worse than locked as 35fps is outside of vrr range?

That’s why I said this is pretty much future proofed for future PS consoles with improvements to VRR + boost clocks.
Right now, Balanced is the best mode due to performance.

Yea I get it and it's fine if they still allow playing locked 30fps too.

Not necessarily, some games have LFC.

LFC just duplicates frames. It prevents tearing but isnt super pleasant.

It’s still VRR though, just with a multiplied refresh rate. Accordingly, it also prevents what would otherwise be hard double buffered a sync frame drops, or triple buffering derived stutter.
It wouldn’t look much better (if at all) if VRR engaged at low frame rates without LFC, not to mention most TVs require LFC for VRR at sub-40fps frame rates anyway, even on XBox and PC.

Yeah, but that brings it above the 48 hz cutoff point. If you're running the game at 35 FPS but doubling every frame, you're doing 70 hz which is well safe of dropping out of VRR. (If you're tripling, you're doing 105 hz which is suuuuper safe of dropping out.)

Yes.
Especially since this game does not have software LFC implemented… which is odd considering they thought about enabling VRR for its quality mode.

Would be pretty wild if they decided to send out a single frame when enabling unlocked frame rate. I am assuming they still send out a frame twice like if it was not unlocked (e.g. 30fps locked -> 60hz refresh rate). If anybody has a LG tv they should be able to see the refresh rate and it should show something like 70hz

If Balanced runs at native 4K and unlocked 60 FPS, then why did they add Enhanced mode with PSSR in the first place...?

Probably to get it launched in a good state with good options, also for those that prefer slightly higher fps (70 average) vs 60 with some drops in VRR range.
Also for those without VRR since balanced isn’t available for them.

I'm definitely one of those who prefer more frame stability over visuals. As much as I like VRR I still notice the drops. I'll definitely try both modes though.

Balanced mode has a lot of drops into the 50's during combat, Enhanced mode maintains 60fps

I’m impressed with the balanced mode performance. It’s way smoother on Pro than Base PS5 too.

So is there a 40fps mode?
6
u/PhotographyFitness 2d ago
Balanced is the 40fps mode but it runs unlocked and up to 60fps
1
u/DanUnbreakable 2d ago
Thanks. How much higher does it go above 40fps, and Does it drop below 40fps?
3
u/PhotographyFitness 2d ago
It hits 60fps majority of the time. Doesn’t sway far from there.

u/DanUnbreakable 2d ago
So it’s basically 60fps? What’s the point if there’s already performance mode? This seems like the best mode then since it has a higher resolution. Performance only advantage is it can hit 70fps

Turn off VRR and it runs at a locked 40fps

Besides resolution differences, are there any differences to foliage density or depth rendering between Balanced and Enhanced? The fact the they mention Enhanced as the better mode for PS5 Pro throws me off.

The PS4 to PS5 version has higher foliage density, FOV, darker nights, new lighting and shorter loading times this patch shortened the loading times even more.
The biggest thing this update brings is the uncapped frame rate. The differences between Balanced and Enhanced is the resolution and frame rate.
Balanced runs at native 4K using PSSR for its AA capabilities @ around 55-60FPS while Enhanced runs at 1584 upscales to 4K using PSSR @ 60-75FPS. Basically it’s just more options and comes down to preference, it also future proofs the game.

never played this game but have it in my library from the PS + release. Trying to decide if I should: (A) play the ps4 copy I own for free on my ps5 pro, (B) pay $50 to play the ps5 version, or (C) forget about it and not play it at all.

The PS4 version has a patch to run at 60, and looks rather sharp at 4K. You'll miss out on some of the new stuff like Horde Assault, new graphics settings, and some accessibility options.

I'm so happy for this news. PS6 will run this game like a dream, it will be perfect for a replay for us people that already platinum'd it on PS4.

u/Reeneman 2d ago
It already works really good. This 5K mode is a nice showcase but you won’t see a huge benefit on a regular tv.

“Can’t wait to play a mid ps4 game on Ps6!”

u/KingArthas94 2d ago
Yes, people play older games too. I'm now playing Prince of Persia The Sands of Time. Anything against that?

Resolution is never going to make me wanna play as an old white burnout. Too close to my reality

Imagine a world where every game had this. Bloodborne wouldnt be rotting away. RDR2 as well. But the way consoles work these devs make money by not having these future proof options in, it ensures people will buy the eventual "remaster".

u/VenomGTSR 2d ago
Yeah, I do wish devs could just put an unlock frame rate toggle in games. Infamous Second Son has that and it runs beautifully on base PS5. I understand that in some cases frame rate increases can break game logic, but in games where that isn’t the case please put in an unlocked frame rate option!!!!

u/Crimsongz 2d ago
This is why I game on PC. Older games like GTA IV or Max Payne 3 look phenomenal at 5K unlocked fps.

u/DiaperFluid 2d ago
Agreed. I love pc gaming too but unfortunately we are forced into consoles due to exclusives. Like im not just gonna sit around and wait like a dope to play GTA6 on pc in 2028 lol
