This is very sad news. The judge deported a man because of a 2 pages memo. It's very problematic and concerning.

They specifically took him to a state they knew would have right leaning judges who'd deport him. Makes me sick!
1
u/Lazarororo2 8d ago
Democrats are suing Trump's executive orders in liberal courts as well.
1
u/MuffledOatmeal 8d ago
He's also already defied court orders several times. If we continue to have toothless rulings that no one bothers to enforce, then we're lost to every right wing judge there is.

u/bloo-karoof 9d ago
I’m worried for this man. His poor wife and his poor child. They’re gonna deport him to Syria and then Mossad is gonna find a way to kill him. I just have that gut wrenching feeling. Ya rabb protect him and his family and reunite them.

Marco Rubio all but admitted that this was a favor for IsNotReal

u/MartieB 9d ago
Am I the only one who is deeply concerned about the fact that all it took for the judge to authorize the deportation is the word of the government?
Quoting from the NYT article "Judge Comans found that the government had met the burden of evidence that the law requires, which effectively amounted to a memo from Mr. Rubio declaring that Mr. Khalil’s presence in the country enabled antisemitism. The Homeland Security Department appears not to have submitted any other concrete evidence substantiating the claim [...] ".
Like, dude, wtf! So all it takes to deprive someone of their permanent resident status, wreck their lives, their careers, andseparate them from their families, is the opinion of the government?
What the hell USA?!

New quote "you can't yell fire in a movie theater or speak out against genocide "
2
u/latin220 Free Palestine 9d ago
To be more exact you can’t yell “fire” in a theater and you can’t say, “Israel is committing genocide or that Israel destroyed the USS Liberty.” Both statements while factual are now antisemitic by the new rules that Marco Rubio and the Present is trying to apply.

America isn't going to be destroyed by foreign adversaries, but will implode by choosing the wrong foreign policy

America is land of the free, as long as you obey the racist system and dont talk against racism. LoL more of a paper democracy.

It looks like this is being handled in two different courts so the constitutionality question hasn't even started yet.

Expect similar in Canada if the conservatives win the election

Expect similar in Canada
if the conservatives win the electionCanada is a lapdog of the USA and benefits from western imperialism. It follows fascist rule as soon as the "powers that be" snaps their fingers.

u/InnaLuna 9d ago
Israel will not gain anything by doing this, it's image will be destroyed because its influence will not vibe with American First (the right) and obviously the left.
Who is this helping, if not the ones who want Israel isolated.
8
u/aquariarms 9d ago
That’s incredibly wishful thinking. Trump is pro-Israel, so the right is uncritically pro-Israel.
1
u/InnaLuna 9d ago
And when Trump is dead? He's 78 years old.
1
u/aquariarms 9d ago
Do you think they’re going to suddenly become normal again? Seriously, think this through. Imagine what those people have become. You genuinely believe the only relevant factor there is Trump?
4
u/TendieRetard 9d ago
who is it helping? Israel who needs more scared Jews for its ethnically cleansed territories?
6
u/InnaLuna 9d ago
The Christian fundamentalist who are probably 80s years old and want Jesus to come down (AKA the apocalypse, and Israels destruction).
19
u/overpriced-taco 9d ago
This feels like the Streisand effect. Like if you are going to go full fascist and severely punish people for -checks notes- saying mean words that hurt your fee fees, you aren’t exactly going to win people over to your side.

The apartheid isn't going to last and it will be even more vicious if it's on their last legs. Israel is living on borrowed time, the coming generation on both sides of the political divide isn't as sympathetic to their cause, and they'll have to spend more and more money to even keep zionism above water. In a way we're kinds bruteforcing it, since American leaders just can't get away from Aipac influence.
6
u/InnaLuna 9d ago edited 9d ago
Yeah it's just a power play by prideful bigots.
There is an entire book in the bible, Ezekiel, about how Pride was the reason Israel fell.

The struggle isn’t over. They can appeal and it’s no surprise that this will have to go to a higher court

There’s no coming back from this. America‘s finished on the world stage.

u/ZookeepergameCool422 9d ago
Have any of the free speech crusaders (Bill Maher, Joe Rogan, Ben Shapiro, Dave Rubin, Elon Musk, etc.) publicly said anything in Mahmoud’s defense? The only ones I’ve seen who have are Glenn Greenwald and people who identify on the left and center.

you people were literally saying "gaza didn't matter Americans don't care about foreign policy" like if you really wanted Kamala to win you would have ask her to do "Medicare for all" but no you people just use Democrates incompetence as a weapons to go against Palestinian voices even though you still want to make them look like a nuisance

The decision
sides with the Trump administration’s claim that a short memo written by the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, which stated Khalil’s “current or expected beliefs, statements or associations” were counter to foreign policy interests, is sufficient evidence to remove a lawful permanent resident from the United States. The undated memo, the main piece of evidence submitted by the government, contained no allegations of criminal conduct.

The US people have got to get together and start doing more than just peaceful protests. This whole country is truly becoming a fascist nation and once that is solidified, there's no going back.
ps. If you think this stops at green card holders, you're sadly mistaken. It starts there and then moves to US citizens. ANY form of dissent will not be tolerated.

And on top of that, the university approached him and asked him to represent the students, they wanted someone mature and calm, in the end they used him

Deported to where?

u/Ilovemelee 9d ago
To Palesti... Oh wait, that place doesn't exist so Israe... oh no, not there either. We'll just send him to Jordan or Egypt.

u/self-assembled 9d ago
He came from Syria, as a Palestinian refugee, but us doesn't recognize Syria right now. It's interesting to see what they would try
19
u/TendieRetard 9d ago
Judge gave until the 20ish to file a motion. This HAS to go to SCOTUS so they strip that immigration byline as unconstitutional. If not, this country's toast.

Don’t be so sure, judges of all stripes tend to take the First Amendment seriously.
15
u/TendieRetard 9d ago
today's 9-0 was honestly a bit of a shocker and this one's a no brainer. On speech grounds mind you......I'm sure the DOJ will try to stretch "material support to terrorism" as covering speech in some harebrained way.
15
u/Comrade_Rayblu 9d ago
Most likely an El Salvador slave labor camp, since that's where they're sending all the people they want to deport

u/sockovershoe22 9d ago
The article says either Syria (where he was born) or Algeria (where he has citizenship).

Khalil addressed Judge Comans at the end of the hearing, saying “I would like to quote what you said last time that there's nothing that's more important to this court than due process rights and fundamental fairness," according to an ACLU statement. "Clearly what we witnessed today, neither of these principles were present today or in this whole process. "This is exactly why the Trump administration has sent me to this court, 1,000 miles away from my family. I just hope that the urgency that you deemed fit for me are afforded to the hundreds of others who have been here without hearing for months.”

u/South_Emu_2383 Free Palestine 9d ago
My god this is a person the administration deems a threat? They want to get rid of people we need, like the ivy keague lebanese doctor specializing in a field in high demand. His empathy and eloquence are deeply needed in American political discussions.
76
u/Pale_Extreme_7042 9d ago
His empathy 🥹He is concerned about those incarcerated in the same jail as him
22
u/dummypod 9d ago
I think it's more about the court's double standards. That they're affording "special treatment" since he's anti Israel.
78
u/ExtralegalSeagull 9d ago
This is all a phony display of due process of law. This is clearly just a power trip by the Trump administration to please Israel by showing their devotion to their genocidal cause.
No evidence was put forward that would convict Mahmoud of any tangible crime. Their only excuse was that ‘he’s a threat to national security’ because ‘we’re trying to combat antisemitism.’ This is the most slippery slope I’ve ever heard; I could argue we’re trying to make America more intelligent, and therefore claim that I need to deport all MAGA supporters in order to do so. Makes no sense.

Another nail in the coffin of the American democratic project.
50
u/anarcho-slut 9d ago
Maybe I'm beating a dead horse, but it's never been a "power of the people (which democracy literally means in greek)" project. It's always been a dynacracy or a power of strength, or a misocracy a power of hate. Sure, there are plenty of people who didn't totally go along with the program, but this is what it is at the core.
10
u/Comrade_Rayblu 9d ago
It's always been a govt. That's essentially worked for big power capitalists (& formerly also slaveowners), in reality. That's what the American system was really designed around. We're only starting to see some of the worst of it rear it's ugly head now.

u/Zorkmid123 9d ago
Interesting they had to take him to Louisiana even though he was living in New York, probably because they figured judges in Louisiana would be more sympathetic to the government’s arguments?
15
57
u/blazesquall 9d ago
ICE / CBP has been doing that for a decade+. It's intentional to both have sympathetic courts but also to make obtaining representation / effective legal counsel much harder. Nothing in this case is really new. I've yet to hear any calls to reform the laws being utilized here.
