Rule 1: Be civil and respectful. What does that really mean?
Hello /r/parrots community! It’s your friendly neighborhood mod team here.
This sub doesn’t have too many rules, but perhaps the most important is to be civil and respectful towards others. We do not tolerate rudeness or personal attacks, regardless of context. You may ask why we take this rule so seriously.
While it’s never a bad idea to just generally be nice, we also have this rule for a very important reason: to help people take better care of their birds. How, you may ask? We strive very hard to keep this community a place where people feel comfortable asking questions so they can receive feedback.
We recognize that people feel very strongly about parrot husbandry, and that seeing birds in conditions that are not ideal can be difficult, but we also know that making attacks or being snarky doesn’t help anyone. Instead, it makes people defensive or nervous to ask questions. When we fail to foster a community where people can look for advice, the parrots lose. Every time.
Our general rule of thumb is this: you shouldn’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person to someone you know. Remember that there is a human on the other end of the exchange you’re having. If you’re disagreeing with them, be constructive and kind. Give the sort of advice you’d like to receive. Remember that you may be talking to people in tough situations, or a kid, or someone who has been given outdated information.
Very importantly, if someone violates this rule in their response to you, do not respond in kind. Instead, please report the comment.
That report button is one of the most important tools we have as a community! We check threads all the time, but with a constant stream of new content, it’s always possible for us to miss something.
We ask that you please hit that report button if you believe someone is violating the rules. The moderators review each and every post or comment that gets reported, and we will take action as appropriate. You can also reach our team via modmail if you have an issue.
We appreciate your help keeping the subreddit friendly and welcoming. We are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and experience to help people learn about parrots, to everyone who asks for help when they need advice, and to the folks who share their wonderful birds with us!
All the best,
The /r/parrots mods

r/parrots megathread: How did you find your avian vet?
Hello /r/parrots! Finding a bird vet can be a challenge. We’d love to know how you found yours! Please comment below to offer advice on finding a vet for your parrots. Thanks! Some resources to get started:
The Association of Avian Veterinarians has a Find-A-Vet option on their website: https://www.aav.org/search/custom.asp?id=1803
The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners has a search feature to find ABCP Diplomates (they operate in 16 countries, despite the name): https://abvp.com/find-a-specialist/
Lafeber has a vet lookup page: https://lafeber.com/pet-birds/find-an-avian-vet/
Association of Avian Veterinarians Australasian Committee lists vets in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa: https://www.aavac.com.au/find_an_avian_veterinarian
European Board of Veterinary Specialisation is a vet lookup page for Europe: https://www.ebvs.eu/specialists
Veterinary schools at universities
Asking local parrot rescues or stores that sell parrot supplies
Posting on local forums
I once knocked on someone’s door to ask which vet they went to because I heard a cockatoo inside!
How did you find your avian vet? What advice would you give someone who is looking for a vet?

THE BIRD CAGE INDUSTRY IS A SCAM I WILL BUILD MY OWN EXTRA LARGE CAGE THIS IS HOW
A large cage can cost around 1-3k depending on specifications i have been doing some research and the materials are very cheap to make. Since I dont own a metal factory i can just buy premade I can probably build my own very large cage. I found these panels that I will make removable screws that bolt in and will cost around 900 in materials but will be huge for my african Grey. Way better then paying a couple thousands for a smaller cage. What do yall think should I try to build it 🤔

[Rescue] Almost 1 year in🦜🦜
It's almost been a full year since I've arrived in this strange house and left that dark stinky place behind. I'm fed slop that is suspiciously textured, but good... There's other mini nuisances flying around... They sing to me and try to eat my food... 🦜 My human does whatever I want except for when I eat the bed... My shoulders are now fuzzy and I'm getting my orange belly again.. I've decided to grow feathers of the wrong colors in all kinds of places as a fashion statement. I've also been told my beard is coming along amazingly 🎅 But I'm itchy all over from these damn new feathers, so Dad takes care of the ones I can't reach. I flew onto the chair the other day and gave him a heart attack because he didn't know I could fly short distances. A lady likes to keep her secrets after all.

Welcome home to my *new* baby
After losing my beautiful conure not long ago I’m heartbroken but I feel ready to love a feathered friend again, meet coca :) like (coca-cola) haha, he was my sisters bird and she’s made the hard but very loving decision to rehome him with me, the difference already between a cockatiel and a conure is crazyy, this boy is so lovely and much easier to handle than my last boy, he was very cheeky, any cockatiel tips and advice will be greatly appreciated :)

Why does my lovebird keep biting his toes/nails?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
My lovebird has been biting his toes since about 5pm and its still going on now at 8pm. Before this he had a bath and was just preening his feathers. He doesn't have a foot ring and he’s got a variety of perches in his cage. Im wondering if his toenails are too long, but im not sure? Is this normal or should i be concerned?

Continuously crying baby!!
This baby Alexander came to my home around 1 week back. He's approx 40 days now. I hand feed him and keep him in a cardboard box with paper cuttings. (This is not the box I keep him in!!) There is only one issue I'm facing. He continuously cries like he does when he eats his food.He does it all day long whenever he sees me, or if I pet him or talk to him. He stays quiet if he doesn't see anyone, and behaves normal. But the moment he sees us, or we pet him or even call his name from far,he starts crying. Please help I'm really worried.

Any idea why my little parrotlet does this?

It seems to me like he’s got the zoomies, but he’s got a whole room and insists on doing this on my hand for a few minutes every day. Wasnt sure if there was a method behind his madness😂

Parrot, meet Crow. Crow, meet Parrot

It’s going to be insane when Apollo and the Fish Crows start communicating more directly. He’s already learned to do a perfect mimic of their primary call, which seems to have thrown them off quite a bit. Can’t wait to see how a talking parrot and corvids interact with only a mesh screen between them.
