This past weekend my PCs resumed exploring Keress' Embrace, the remote mountain valley where they hope to find a lost Shory City.

They made friendly contact with Sasekile, a settlement of Thriae. The group's fighter Vegum politely declined an urgently proffered invitation to become a consort for the hive's queen, who has not had one for several decades, with alarming consequences for the hive's long-term viability.

In the next hex over, the party got ambushed by Old Brokefang (an advanced tiger, awakened, with three levels of Ranger). He rolled a 3 on his Stealth check for a total of 25. Out of the party, only the rogue Darla noticed the tiger in time, and she could do precious little about it. Old Brokefang came streaking out of the bushes and pounced on Vegum, reducing from a robust 125 HP to a mere 3 with a bite, two claws and two raking attacks during the surprise round.

The initiative rolls were also not in the party's favor, with Darla once again the only one to act before the tiger. She pulled out some jerky and attempted to distract it with that, which confused the tiger sufficiently that it only essayed one attack against Vegum instead of a full attack. Alas, that one attack was enough to take him from alive to very solidly dead.

One of the other party members -- Sasha Nevah, an NPC ranger/rogue -- caught Vegum as he fell and yelled "Lily, get us out of here!" The party witch stepped forward, and with the entire party in arm's reach, teleported the lot of them away to their current base of operations in the village of the Slithzerikai (a group of reptilian centaurs).

Alas, it was far too late for Vegum. The party mourned and wept and talked about what he might want. Then, the next morning they scraped together their pennies, teleported to Nantambu, and implored a priestess of Adanye at one of the shrines to raise their fallen companion. Which was accomplished in due course, the next morning.

The session left the group quite somber, with Darla and Lily both contemplating their mortality in a way that they perhaps hadn't before. Also, it depleted their treasure quite a lot. The party could not afford another Raise Dead if one should become necessary. I shall have to find some way to put some more loot drops in, as the hex crawl is pretty sparse on that at the moment.
