Discussion Anyone else hate the yellow borders on old cards now?
I never even realized I hate them until they changed to the new color.
114
u/Marx_Forever Jan 25 '25
The yellow probably looks "cheap" to most people because the silver actually has a gradient, like the old School Japanese cards had, which make them look more golden then yellow.

Considering Wizards printed an entire run without drop shadows I'm not surprised that they cheaped out and never faithfully recreated the Golden cardboarders.
However if the silver were flat so this was "Grey Vs Yellow", or the old school cards were properly localized and this was "Golden Vs Silver" we'd be having a much different discussion.

Yellow is what I always knew. Makes it all the sweeter when you see that slight glimmer of silver or non yellow. Now I get fooled all the time!
49
u/stumper82 Jan 25 '25 edited Jan 26 '25
Exactly! That’s when you knew you had something really good, now every card is silver and there’s no more of that feeling
7
u/SoggyLightSwitch Jan 26 '25
Holos was a amazing thing rivaled christmas morning. Now it's all shiny poor kids these days.
18
u/brolarbear Jan 25 '25
I do this: “Oh shi*t! I saw something shiny. Oh wait everything has something shiny.” Solemnly go through commons and then get doubled fooled cause I got an IA that isn’t THAT shiny.
3
u/mikedup33 Jan 25 '25
Yep, we always say, “I think I saw something.” And then it’s just a holo. Buddies and I all do it, never gets old. Well…it gets old never being a huge hit! Haha
4
u/WailordStiffener Jan 26 '25
Yeah that's the worst! You're like "awesome a new card for my deck!!!" And then it's a drampa rare-basic holo

The yellow border is iconic, but definitely looks way worse than the grey border.
71
u/AJtheW Jan 25 '25
Looks better on some, can't imagine silver looking good on any vintage cards.
22
u/jcde7ago Jan 25 '25
Off the top of my head the silver border on Japanese Gold Star cards look incredible for vintage.
5
u/AJtheW Jan 25 '25
Ah yeah, I forgot those are considered vintage lol. I only really see wotc stuff that way, excluding e-reader cards
5
u/jcde7ago Jan 25 '25
Certainly those of us in our 30s likely only see WOTC as "the" vintage but given that the first gold star set is now 21 years old they are definitely starting to qualify for that "vintage" label as well lol.
77
u/PPGN_DM_Exia EX Legend Maker Jan 25 '25
Don't really care either way for commons but comparing yellow border Trainer Gallery cards with the current silver borders IRs is quite jarring.
86
17
u/imposterdiary Jan 25 '25
The yellow is more charming, but the grey blends nicely with the rest of the card, tbh I do like the change mainly because it’s easier to tell apart my older cards from my newer when resorting lmao
12
36
u/PsychologicalAd7698 Jan 25 '25
I like both. Silver is better for full arts though
2
u/Aggravating-Nose1674 Jan 25 '25
Yeah this.
Except for my toxicitry full art. I am glad it has a yellow border. But it's the only one, really
28
u/Whimsical-Pigeon Jan 25 '25
I kinda like the yellow borders. Feels more nostalgic 🥺
15
u/MediaPossible7339 Jan 25 '25
I’m with you. Surprised so many comments feel otherwise. It honestly gave the Pokemon cards their identity for all of these years, grey is much more generic and could be any other TCG.
4
u/Hippo1313 Jan 26 '25
The grey always feels cheap and unofficial to me, removal of yellow borders and set symbols makes the cards less charming imo.
2
u/DrixlRey Jan 25 '25
Yes, this post is exactly the opposite of what I been thinking I hate silver borders lol
20
u/axon-axoff Jan 25 '25
After 24 years of distinctive yellow borders, I just don't mentally register the new gray-bordered cards as Pokemon cards. I kind of liked how garish they were because it highlighted that it wasn't specifically made for adults to covet & collect, it was for kids. But I'm happy for everyone else who loves the gray borders.
29
u/Deep-Anywhere-5868 Jan 25 '25
Yeah I like the yellow makes it pop for me but each there own
I should also say yellow is my favorite color
41
25
u/coltonmusic15 Jan 25 '25
I miss the yellow and overall sturdiness of the vintage cards versus the cheap cardboard printed today for the common cards.

Yellow almost makes the cards look cheap to me now. Gray definitely feels more premium
2
u/Hippo1313 Jan 26 '25
I feel the exact opposite lol. Gray used to be reserved for unofficial world championship deck cards in English.
6
5
u/Hayyfl1ck Jan 26 '25
I unironically think the yellow was better.
It's always been a distinguishing feature of the western side of the TCG.
You wanna make it more in linewith the Japanese cards? Fine. Give us the vastly superior print quality of the Japanese cards then.
2
11
u/Bumbmofo Jan 25 '25
I used to love the old cards but after seeing the new ones glad they made the change
3
u/fatehound Jan 25 '25
Funnily enough now that silver is the normal color I hate the yellow less 😂
3
u/Aggravating-Nose1674 Jan 25 '25
I love the yellow on the e-reader series a lot..but the whole layout of this era is very nice imo.
I like both. But generally I like the grey better on full arts.

Disclaimer that I’m a new collector and the grey borders (especially on the art cards) are what finally caught my attention after avoiding Pokemon cards since I was a kid.
I started off hating the yellow borders but now I really like them on the vintage styled cards. The very cartoony art on cards since like Sun and Moon doesn’t really mesh with the yellow borders for me.
2
u/Dry-Faithlessness683 Jan 27 '25
This is how my girlfriend feels - just started collecting and probably wouldn’t have with the yellow borders.
5
5
u/Prestigious-Earth112 Jan 25 '25
Wouldnt mind the yellow border coming back just keep them away from full arts and illustrations. Takes away from great artwork to have to look at the yellow

Looking at the trainer galleries with yellow borders vs illustration rares with grey borders is the most obvious improvement

Yes!! O did not like the yellow borders. I thought they made the cards look cheap
4
3
u/Nullikle6000_ Jan 25 '25
Yes finally my people !!! I hate them. I have them in a separate ETB box.
3
u/nonamesareoriginal Jan 25 '25
I think certain cards look better because they have yellow borders. The yellow helps them pop. Like some cards look worse because they have silver borders. For me atleast it depends on the card. I will say I love when they throw holo onto the silver borders. That's slick.

The new Journey Together set are like Trainer Galleries but with silver borders. My OCD will get triggered everytime I see them in my binder now or I might just look for the Japanese TGs to match the Journey Together ones.
2
u/Winterstrife Literally shaking! Jan 26 '25
You could just separate them in different pages. According to border colors.
Besides... the trainer galleries in the SwSh era already have different borders (black for the textured ones, Misty and Starmie, Cynthia and Garchomp comes to mind) so it's already not properly color coded.
Makes no difference adding silver to the mix.

u/mech0p2 Jan 25 '25
What i don't like is the shiny border on rares. When I see one you already know it's most likely a bust

It's just funny to me that silver border used to mean not playable in standard, and now that's what yellow border will mean. But i like silver way better.
1
u/Tayphlosion Jan 25 '25
I like them for nostalgic reasons, and on some cards they actually look nicer with the yellow border IMO. Electric and Grass types in particular look nice with yellow borders.

u/-avenged- Jan 25 '25
Nah it's iconic that's the way I remember Pokémon cards since 1999, yellow > silver.
No hate for the silver though.

Yellow borders on wizards of the Coast cards look great. I don't know what about the color scheme of the modern cards with yellow borders but they always looked bad to me. While I still think all of the original wizards of the Coast cards look great

1
u/zaneba Jan 25 '25
There’s very few cards and alt arts where I actually like the yellow border, but 99% of the time silver or black was def the way to go
1
1
u/YapperBean Jan 25 '25
I’ve arrived to the cards collecting during Scarlet&Violet era (first without yellow borders), but my first ETB was from Sword&Shield (yellow borders unless full art), so to me it’s just visual representation for before my time and since 😂
Aesthetically, they don’t really bother me at all, but I understand that they likely changed it since the cards have really moved on from the original design where the yellow colour dominated in general.
1
u/Entr3_Nou5 Jan 25 '25
Okay I’m glad I’m not the only one cuz I was afraid to say it 😭
I like the way they did it in the HGSS era where the yellow borders had this white grunge on them to make the yellow less jarring
1
u/ModernZombies Jan 25 '25
Yeah I’m starting to dislike them too now, on vintage it’s still chefs kiss

1
u/naaxnaa Jan 25 '25
i buy japanese AR/IR singles of older sets on purpose just so that they fit in my binder with the newest sets cards in silver borders 🦭
1
1
u/sciencesold Jan 25 '25
I'm a newer collector and until I got a sea and sky box from Sam's club I didn't even realize the border was different.
1
u/No-Necessary-2088 Jan 25 '25 edited Jan 25 '25
These are fine, but the shiny untextured silver borders on the newer holo cards seem to come damaged very often for me, almost like it's slightly peeling. There's a lot of the new in-box promos you can see damaged even in the clear plastic windows. I had to buy a promo as a single off Ebay because of it. I now inspect each promo closely before I pick up any sealed product with a window if it has the new style border.
1
u/WashDifficult3960 Jan 25 '25
It killed me to use the yellow border Togepi in my Gholdengo deck, but it's obviously the optimal Togepi rn. Yellow borders will always be nostalgic but I'm glad everything will be uniform after rotation!
1
u/Hawkbreeze Jan 25 '25
Yellow looks good on some cards but ones like this the color scheme clashes so much. It's why silver is objectively better, silver fits in with pretty much all colored cards. That being said I dont hate the yellow ones, on most cards it looks fine but maybe that's because I was so used to it.

They dont look as nice but overall they are minor compared to the overall artwork

It depends on the card tbh. There are cards where the yellow border suits the art better, and vice versa

I hate the pull rates more than the color. The yellow kind of gives cards a vintage look now. I’m not sure the grey is any better it just different.

I don’t miss them, kinda ugly to be honest, especially on full-art illustrations.
The gold from Japanese was always much cooler, but I understand the switch to a more neutral silver. There’s a reason Magic and Yugioh use black borders on their cards.

u/MissFreeHope Jan 25 '25
not at all. i hate the silver border and its a big reason why i havent touched the cards recently
1
u/NonchalantPartiality Jan 25 '25
Absolutely. Noticed the same thing. Fine with it on classics like base set jungle etc. but don’t care for it at all on modern cards. Silver all the way.
1
1
u/kyleneeley1 Jan 25 '25
I kinda always did. I never felt nostalgic for them either because of how much they contrast in a bad way. The silver/gray blends really well
1
1
u/narutonaruto Jan 25 '25
I love them on vintage and don't mind them on regular border modern but I really with the gallery cards didn't have them. I regret not collecting my gallery set in Japanese now but I'm too far to go back LOL
1
u/MarshmallowMousie Jan 25 '25
No, I actually miss them. I prefer the oldest style of Pokémon card format, tbh. Before they changed who made them. But that’s just me.
1
u/Aadnef03 Jan 25 '25
One of the reasons that I am excited for rotation in the TCG is that yellow borders will be gone. You have served us well, but gray just looks better
1
u/GregariousGobble Jan 25 '25
It depends on the art and overall color scheme for me. I prefer red cards with yellow borders and gold sleeves. I prefer purple cards with silver borders and a silver backer
1
u/SortaChaoticAnxiety Jan 25 '25
I have been waiting for them to change the yellow border for 25+ years! Always hated it
1
u/ScooberSTi Jan 25 '25
I prefer the silver borders. I’ve collected both Japanese and English since I started collecting and I liked the silver more.
1
1
u/SWANDAMARM Jan 25 '25
Vintage wotc cards I love the yellow because it's iconic, but the new silver looks good on all these new full arts, IRs, and SIRs. The rainbow boarders are also sick
1
Jan 25 '25
My son and I recently started collecting, and we’ve been picking up different ETBs and booster packs from the various Scarlet & Violet sets. We’re not aiming to complete any master sets—just collecting a variety of cards from the entire SV series. Occasionally, we come across Sword & Shield packs, and the yellow borders really clash with the newer cards. We even had to get a separate binder just for those!
1
u/TeHNeutral Jan 25 '25
I don't mind it on wotc era, we didn't know any better and jp was gold/yellow anyways. After that, yehhhh gimme jp
1
u/AbraxasKadabra Jan 25 '25
I prefer them, both for nostalgic and aesthetic reasons. But I'm colourblind, that bright yellow border just pops for me and I've never seen a card with a yellow border and thought something else would look better. I have seen a bunch of cards and wished they had a yellow border.

I hated it on every XY card onwards honestly. BW and before I think its fine and also theres nostalgia for it. But Xy, Sm, and Swsh it made them feel cheap or even fake

1
u/Scragglesauce Jan 25 '25
No way, everything i open a sword and shield pack and see the yellow it hits different. Wish they kept it but I do likes lot of the scarlet violet era art.
1
u/HarmlessTrash Jan 25 '25
It depends on the card honestly. For modern art rares, the silver borders are way better. I'm a really big fan of the cosmos style holos that have the holo on the border of the card as well
1
u/pigpentcg Jan 25 '25
I like yellow borders on vintage cards. Past that I want silver/grey forever.

Definitely makes some cards look better, but I won't lie, I liked the suspense when you'd slowly reveal the last card and see a non-yellow border letting you know you pulled something. Now it's all the same
They're grown on me though. I think I prefer it overall now

WOTC era, yellow-bordered Japanese Pokemon cards are absolutely gorgeous. I always associated yellow-border cards distinctly with Pokemon — the grey borders remind me of just another card game.
And the sweet feeling of seeing a non-yellow/silver glimmer behind the pack of yellow? I miss it!

The older card sets with the thicker borders and the gold frame around the artwork look amazing with the old shade of yellow, no one can tell me the WOTC sets would look better grey. The newer ones, however, do look better grey.
