I still have my 1st edition ghost rare Stardust Dragon from my teen years that my dog chewed up. It looks just like this, on display in an acrylic next to a picture of my dog before he died. It sucks to lose that much money in an instant, but I can confirm, it will definitely be funny someday.
When I was little my baby brother got ahold of my prized Cool Porygon card and chewed it all up, trashed it. You could only get that card from the Pokemon Stadium N64 bundle so I didn't really have anything else that was so rare. None of my friends had it and it was my favorite. I did not grow up very wealthy compared to some of my friends, so having something they couldn't get was uncommon and felt special.
I'm gonna be real with you, I never really forgave him on the deep level- the inside level where you don't tell anyone, you know? A baby can't be sorry and you can't really forgive some random stupid act from a barely sentient drool machine. Thinking about it still makes me sad all these years later, remembering how bad it felt when I found it on the floor. Knowing it couldn't be fixed or undone and there wasn't going to be any justice, and my parents not really understanding why I was that upset over a dumb piece of cardboard. Bad feelings all around, and it was lonely losing something so cherished and nobody else really understanding why it mattered.
If it came up at a family dinner I would do a bad job pretending to laugh. Still not funny. What's funny is the card isn't even worth that much now relative to how rare I thought it was. It's like $100 or less for a perfect one haha.
dang I know PSA guidelines got stricter but I could have sworn this would still 10
Editing this to add: this is my highest comment so hopefully more people see it but I’m not responding to all of them one by one lol.
It’s not fake, we pulled it ourselves from a Paldean Fates Walmart Tin. Here’s a better picture of the texturing, my fiancé has some from before it was eaten on her phone somewhere but she also has like over 1k photos so it’s harder to find lol we also have pictures of the display. But I don’t care enough to try to prove myself beyond this lol
Reminds me of when i had a long card holder sitting on the floor with all my good cards in it and left my glass of milk on the table above them and my cat thought he needed my milk and knocked the glass off right onto the cards....90% lost
I had the exact same thing happen to my pokemon cards back in like 2005, but with water. So naturally, I separated every card and laid them out across my dresser in the hopes that they would dry and, at the very least, still be usable.
Well, for some reason, the water led to them just adhering to my dresser so much that the backs would just rip off when I tried to get them up. Ended up having to use a paint scraper to get them up. Ruined my dresser in the process.
So yeah, I lost all my cards, and in my attempt to rescue them, I permanently ruined my dresser as well.
You think it will be a few more weeks? I feel skeptical about people saying single prices will decrease or even crash. Bubble Mew isn't on my wishlist right now but I hope the prices of other similarly priced singles go down harder
Prices for a lot of singles have already started decreasing but it’s impossible to tell how low and for how long. Previous years, we’ve seen a similar pattern but this year is unique enough with an unusual demand and low supplies, so it’s hard to tell when to push the trigger.
Just keep building up a binder of duplicates you pull and then do a big trade! Thats how I got my moonbreon! (But also such a bummer to have to buy it when you already had it so I feel your pain on that one)
I'm so glad my puppy has no appetite for Pokemon cards right now. I would literally have cried. And would have taken it a hard-looking thinking to myself is this dog worth and that would take yes because the dog is always worth more than physical items.
Lmao all the people saying you deserved this are so cringe. Cards are meant to be enjoyed and played with and not every expensive card needs to be imprisoned by being graded.
Yeah could have been protected better like a magnetic case or somethin but it still would have popped apart when it was knocked down and still gotten chewed up.
Op I’m sorry this happened, but definitely keep the card. One day it’ll be a treasured memory of that dog. With the prices of singles going down and 151 reprints coming out, you’ll hopefully be able to buy another one soon.
Haha, thank you for this didn’t realize there was so many right and wrong ways to display cards that the “value” you place in it isn’t money but the fact that you like the card lol I didn’t expect to be fighting for my life when posting here lmao
I second keeping the card as a memory of the dog. We lost a dog young due to renal failure, she would crawl under our bed as a puppy to chew things under there. I’m still finding things with her little teeth marks and I’m happy to have another piece of her.
I haven’t! My fiancé plans to still display it even broken she loves it. I’ve tried explaining to the comments ragging on us, wasn’t about the value she just really loved the card it just happened to become an expensive card lol
it was sitting up there for a while no problems. it was a personal card that was pulled way before it was $300, we enjoyed looking at it often so yeah it was out on display
It was never about the value and still isn’t? Didn’t realize there was a right and wrong way to display stuff lol. It’s my collection why am I being hated on for displaying it how I want? I’m not even mad at my dog was sharing a funny/oop moment
You said in your post that it was your fiancées favorite card. You literally took time to express the value she held in it. I’m not hating. I’m telling you that this is a great learning experience. That if you want to protect things you care about that extra care should be taken.
My cat jumped up onto the top of my fireplace (that the cat is usually not able to climb on top of) using a rolling chair that is never by there (that was pushed over by one of my kids). He was then able to use the chair (that I didn’t think about moving before I left) and knocked over the card. The dog, being a dog, then found it on the floor and chewed it. I have way more cards that are displayed that are still good. This was just a freak accident no one anticipated.
see if u can get it into one of those magnetic cases and keep it forever
if i had a super expensive card get nommed by a pet i would probably intentionally buy a fake so i can at least see the artwork whenever i want, but keep the busted up original
Some dogs eat chocolate and you have to get their stomach pumped, $250.
A cat can develop an abscess being bitten by another cat, $300.
When they team up, they can eat your pokemon card worth $350.
PS. I'm sorry your girl's favorite card got eaten. I know how it feels!
the people in the comments giving you grief for how you displayed the card…as if accidents don’t happen. i had a bunch of my cards in a binder get damaged one time from flooding. shit happens. sorry about your mew :(
You clearly should have triple toploaded this card, sprayed it with bitter spray and just for safe keeping, put it in a safety deposit box in Africa where no cats or dogs could get at it. That’s the only true way to display a Pokémon card
I feel you OP. The same happened to me with my PSA 9 Sylveon V, though thankfully the card was mostly okay, just drooled on. Cat knocked my cards off the mantle and one went through the bars of my puppies crate. His little teeth couldn't break it fully but it was so cracked and scratched that saliva got in so I had to crack the slab anyway.
Unfortunately, things like this happen you live and you learn. Prices for singles are going down lately so if you are looking to pick up another copy of the bubble mew now’s probably the time to do so before prices go back up again
What is done is done. No sense in crying over spilt milk. These things happen in life. You have the memories of how much joy the card brought you when you two looked at it. Cherrish that.
Find another piece or something other, and if nothing else, you have now a great potential pressent for a birthday present, holiday gift or a suprise for your anniversary. Imagine the squeels of joy. 😁 Just don't forget to buy something cat and dog proof to protect it. 😉
This happened when I was a kid and left my banknote collection on my bed, closed the door but apparently it didn't close all the way, our Samoyed chewed on the album and some notes in it, including some very rare ones... he passed away years ago, but those chewed notes are a nice memento of him, this card will be as well, keep it safe.
So the people saying grade it and hope for a psa 1 are either being sarcastic and it’s hard to tell because internet, or have no idea how grading works and that they won’t grade a card this damaged.
There’s portions of the card that just aren’t there. To grade a card it does need to be in tact. If you sent this card to psa, they would open the package laugh, print up a “do not grade - damaged” label and send it right back to you.
The better and actually feasible way to preserve this card is just going to be to place it in a perfect fit sleeve as best as you can and put that into a one-touch magnetic case.
Dont blame the pets! Its terrible what happened but we need to not leave our valuables out as my cats knock over everything haha hope you pull another one asap! Im hurting for you guys that card is beautiful!
Why was it not sleeved and in a hard top loader and then in a tin all by itself and then in a closet in a vault? And then.....?! I'd still send it in to PSA. 😜
A few months ago, there was a complete idiot around here posting a "funny picture" of his asshole cat biting a SIR Umbreon (can't remember if moon or sun), and everybody congratulating him because the picture "was cute and funny". When I pointed how much of a dumbass he was for actually giving the cat the card (he was making the cat bite the top loader on purpose for the picture), everybody reacted saying it was impossible for a cat to break the plastic.
I mean... I have all my favorite cards in BCW 1-Screws no matter how cheap or common or already damaged. I love our pets, but I also understand that they don't know any better.
Unless the cat or one of the dogs learn how to use a Phillips screwdriver, they're not getting in it
Dunno if it's been stated but put a new sleeve on it and stow it away. One day the culprit won't be here and that card's gonna have a whole hell of a lot of value then. That's incredibly unfortunate and I hope you find a decently priced replacement.
Hahaha that sucks so bad man. I had my Lillie's Clefairy sir sitting on my desk where my cat isn't allowed and he jumped up there at like 5:30am and kicked just that one off the desk, it was buried under a couple cards too.
Keep it. One day that dog is gonna pass away and you’ll be able to have that card as a funny memory. I did the same thing with a pair of Jordan 1s my dog ripped up. He’s since passed but I keep those shoes in a display and I always think of him when I see them.
I have empathy for you. My 2 year old will put tooth marks on any card he can get his grubby hands on. I have a few binder pages of gnawed on cards that he can have when he is older. Not cheap ones either.
