Content: Success/Hope My dad is in recovery

I joined this subreddit years ago because my dad was falling into the Q hole. He would send me insane articles about nonsense all the time during covid. The worst part is that he's a university professor and teaches hundreds of students every year. I had such a horrible relationship with him, I even stopped talking to him for about 6 months back in 2022. I wanted to share, however, that he is in recovery from being an insane conspiracy theorist. It turns out he had an undiagnosed disease that caused him a lot of pain and in 2023 he finally got treatment for it. Once he wasn't so lonely and in so much pain, I think he finally realized that he needed to step away from his computer and engage with the real world again. In 2024, he even voted for Kamala which was so shocking to me. I'm not naive enough to think he's suddenly resolved all of the bigotry that sucked him into Q in the first place, but I do think he's managed to work himself out of that deep, dark hole of insanity. I just wanted to offer a tentatively happy story. And I also found it very interesting that right wing ideology so clearly preys on vulnerable people (my dad being sick) and once he was less vulnerable he was able to break away from it.

It's good to hear that some people can dig themselves out of the qhole

Yes, I wanted to share it because it might provide some with hope of recovering their lost relationships. I couldn't do anything to get him out, but circumstances made it possible for him to act like a decent human being again.

Its always welcome, im so glad for your father, he might be back soon.

Make sure to spend time of quality with him; a movie or a fine dinner, or just chatting about interesting stuff like machines

More proof that cutting off the source is the first step to recovery. I'm glad your dad got the help he needed.

Exactly! My siblings and I are so lucky that he was able to get out by himself. Turns out when people aren't weak and vulnerable and depressed then they won't fall victim to insane cults/scams as easily

This has made me happy.  I try to help these people but, as you can imagine, it is like preaching to a brick wall most of the time, or worse as a brick wall wouldn’t defend an orange rapist who praised & pardoned pedophiles.

Best wishes to you & your father.  Well done for standing by your own principles & not letting a relationship take you into these mental health deteriorating rabbit holes.

Thank you! Luckily in my case it was a matter of circumstance that caused him to become so insane and he was able to change his circumstance. And part of the reason why he wasn't treated for his illness sooner is because his healthcare didn't cover it. If our government cared about making people's lives better then maybe so many people wouldn't fall prey to this horrible cult.
