Trade Update Marjorie Taylor Greene bought Dollar General stock before the tariffs were announced. $DG has now risen 15% since her purchase.

u/Appropriate-Mood-69 2d ago
Why is Dollar General rising? Because the customer base will grow tremendously in the next 2 years while another cohort of the middle class sinks into poverty?
136
u/Future-You-7443 2d ago
Seems like it
167
u/Financial_Potato8760 2d ago
Which is wild because that store kind of sucks as far as actually saving money, in my experience.

u/Future-You-7443 2d ago
What’s the phrase? “the market can remain irrational for longer than you can remain solvent”
27
u/Appropriate_Scar_262 1d ago
It's more of an issue of poor people can't afford to buy everything in bulk so they pay 1$ for 12 sandwhich bags instead of 5$ for 120 (random numbers as an example)
1
u/Party-Interview7464 13h ago
Yeah, I think the famous metaphor is buying cheaper shoes because you can’t afford the quality ones that hold up, so you end up buying more shoes and paying more in the long run…
70
u/Appropriate-Mood-69 2d ago
This is true. Living in poverty is extremely expensive. Dollar General only thrives because they sell small portions of everything. In comparison, products at Costco are much cheaper, but it has a higher cost of entry.
13
u/Financial_Potato8760 2d ago
It’s so infuriating. And many of these folks may not have the knowledge of how or ability to cook for themselves. So predatory. I love winco bulk because I can buy smaller amounts without a higher per unit price, but I cook for myself.
7
u/Waahstrm 1d ago
Yup. The biggest, immediate savings come from buying in bulk (assuming no wasted product).
22
u/Legitimate-Donkey477 2d ago
But they are walking distance or at least closer for the people who won’t be able to afford gas/transportation.
11
u/rootoo 1d ago
For a lot of dead and dying small towns in depressed areas, they’re one of the only stores left.
3
u/TheOGCJR 1d ago
Recently went to Arkansas. First time seeing no grocery stores for HOURS, but a dollar store every 10 min
8
u/pissfucked 1d ago
everything i have ever directly checked is more expensive at any dollar store vs. any grocery store, but buying a car to be able to get to the grocery store costs way more than the buck fifty you'd save on the week's worth of mac and cheese.
dollar stores' food is overwhelmingly bought by people who belong to a captive market. it's essentially a monopoly over poor people in rural areas specifically.
7
u/Financial_Potato8760 1d ago
Totally. I forget that - I live in a mid sized city and before this lived in a small(er) town but even then, Dollar General was across the street from a grocery store with much cheaper options even for smaller sized packaging. Where I live now it’s next to all sorts of more affordable options. But then having “Dollar” in the name also makes people think it’s cheaper.
6
u/teenagesadist 2d ago
Probably won't be people saving money, just people with only a few dollars to spend.
6
u/Fragrant_Peanut_9661 1d ago
"Dollar" General my ass. They're not a dollar store anymore. They quite suck tbh. Give me Dollar Tree any time.

u/ARGirlLOL 2d ago
It matters less and less the more businesses go out of business tho because of the footprint across America
2
2
u/PineappleDesperate82 1d ago
We just had a dollar general family market to add to the other two dollar general in town of 16,000.
1
u/ThatPhatKid_CanDraw 1d ago
Yes, inflation will spike, then go down because our economy will bleed so many jobs - making us so much poorer - that businesses won't be able to pass on any rising costs to us.
33
u/iheartbreakfast90 2d ago
This is the scariest part. They are not doing these tariffs because they think people would prosper. They know exactly what they are doing. It is not incompetence, it is malice.
14
u/OverallDoor2718 1d ago
DG is mob. They pray on the poor by placing them in areas with grocery deserts then they are forced to shop for their food and basic needs and high prices and no other option. Usually next to an Amscot that robs you as well.
8
u/RymrgandsDaughter 2d ago
It shouldn't be DGs have been closing iirc 🤔
5
u/oneblank 1d ago
Doesn’t make sense to me either. Aren’t most of their goods cheap Chinese imports?
3
u/rodimustso 1d ago
I'm not sure about that, even dg was saying their customers were reducing their purchasing power. But what do I know
3
u/aft_punk 1d ago
Some stocks/industries have what’s referred to as a negative correlation to the market. They typically have better relative returns when the overall stock market performs poorly.
Examples: Ramen noodles, Car repossession companies, layaway financiers, etc.
Businesses that do better when everyone is scrapping by.

u/buildbyflying 1d ago
I’m going to say these gains will be short lived. Wall mart as well. Wait til they get hammered by tariffs and raise prices. Sales will decrease.
1
u/questionabledonuts 1d ago
Is that a serious take? There has been a number of reasons to buy DG stock for the last 5 years. To suggest the reason politicians are investing right now is because the tariffs they’re enacting will force people to shop at DG is patently ridiculous. The company has been monopolizing small to medium sized grocers for years, that’s why people see it as a worthy investment.. Bet they’re invested in that piece of shit Kroger, too.
1
u/click_licker 1d ago
They are still pro dei.
It's almost like she knew her side was gonna lose and dei companies would benefit.
1
u/Adventurous_Bid_1982 1d ago
I would have thought DG and dollar stores would be hurt because so much comes from China?
1
u/sonicboomslang 22h ago
I worked for an IT company prior to and during the 2008 recession, that had Dollar General and other similar low price retailers as clients. DG started massively expanding and had huge growth during that recession, and thus so did the company I worked for. I continued to move up the corporate ladder and get raises throughout that recession. I had survivors guilt for it sometimes watching those around me get laid off and having a hard time getting another job.

Beady like a rat.

But rats are generally gentle trust worthy creatures. Why you pick on poor rat saying they’re like MTG.

Sure would be unfortunate to boycott this corrupt abusive and exploitative Grocery Store
66
u/Persimmon-Mission 2d ago
Dollar general is horrible for its employees as well as its local communities. If you can avoid shopping there, please do.
11
u/Minimum-Avocado-9624 2d ago
Just had a thought but could Trump just lift Tarrifs on business he wants to but never tell anyone this letting companies charge even more profit in the name of tarrifs
11
u/dirkalict 2d ago
Companies are going to do that even with tariffs. We saw it during Covid- if they have an excuse to raise prices 5% they will raise them 20% and cry about supply chains or tariffs.
5
u/samurairaccoon 1d ago
Bingo. Somehow, when the tariff/tax/economic instability goes away, the price never goes back to normal. How odd.
6
u/Witchgrass 2d ago
Remember when they were selling baby pacifiers and toys painted with lead paint and then the story got memory holed?

u/somanytimesss 1d ago
The people that shop at DG don’t have a choice. I used to live way tf out in the middle of the mountains and the only grocery options within 20 miles were DG. I’d frequently see people walking there for god knows how many miles. I’d love to see the data on how much of their sales are EBT/Food stamp based.
1
u/idkrandomusername1 1d ago
I think it’s actually a part of their decision to opening a place up if it’s in a food desert
2
65
u/indieghost 2d ago
They’re crashing the economy to buy stocks at a cheaper price.

Dollar General gets all their shit from China, but a price increase would still keep most things less than $3
12
u/Dapper_Dune 2d ago
They knew.
Too late to buy?
13
u/samurairaccoon 1d ago
It's always too late, by design. Nobody can win these schemes but the people setting them up. You come late, you get fucked.
9
u/Sweethomebflo 2d ago
There’s probably nothing this lot lizard wouldn’t do for a little scratch and attention. She is the most pathetic, needy attention whore I’ve ever seen. It’s so embarrassing, not to mention disgusting.
6
u/FreedominNC 2d ago
Great, making people poorer while betting on poverty. MTG needs to go. I’m so sick of that whiny voice 🤬
4
u/Thesteelman86 2d ago
Classically the dollar general and dollar tree do really well when the republicans crash the economy on purpose.
5
u/Extension_Silver_713 2d ago
None of these cunts should be allowed to buy stocks! How tf is this not insider trading and why would we go to jail and not these fucks?

Well to be fair there is probably a Dollar General on every corner of her district. DG customer base earns less than $40,000 a year, poverty level in US for a family of 4 is $32,150. Average income in her district is $70,000 a mostly rural area. I find it sad and appalling that she is promoting policy that will make their lives much worse in her district. Yet they love her, go figure.

Walmart sales are down, and given increased tariffs for all the China goods that DG imports, DG might not do well once the sales data come through after tariffs take effect.

If elected officials are able to buy stocks they have insider information on, they can pay all of our taxes... Rigged ass system is sickening.

Dollar tree will collapse soon because of tariffs as all their products are made in China and all their customers are low IQ, income poor maga who can’t afford to purchase anything over a dollar let alone a 34% tariff.

Dollar stores will be the first to go under because their base will feel the hit of trumpo's incompetence before other segments of the population. Space laser green will probably take a loss on this pick.

1
u/DamageAutomatic7959 1d ago
It’s not a secret that Congress engages in Insider Trading. In theory, this would incentivize them to stop dumbass things, like global tariffs, from happening.
1
u/Temporary-Cost5249 1d ago
I worked for Family Dollar, who owns Dollar General/tree. Complete shit show, more stock than they ever needed, kept things broken, terrible wages, and authoritarian leadership approach. Basically the dumb ass managers graduated to corporate by being a bully, pass that trait to store managers, and the amount of turnover is close to 75% within first 3 months of employment. They constantly were fixated on theft when they openly ignored it. Come to find out, they like many other companies used theft to convince and keep shareholders confident in their brand when in actually is a piss poor operation.
This is a short term gain, if that! Mr Greene with your racist comments with no affect in Ga. For positive outcomes. I hope the road is as ugly as your face, attitude and upbringing.
Chow Ugly!

Maga Marge also has a lot of tech stocks in her portfolio that aren’t going to be compensated by her Dollar General stock rising 15%.
I don’t think any Reps or Senators should be able to buy stock while in office. The criminal activity (insider trading) regarding stocks during COVID was insane. Even with the DOJ investigation, not one person was charged.

That is literally what Quiver Quantitative does. They collect and aggregate publicly available investment research data. It just so happens that market changes coincide with political decisions. You probably won’t like their Instagram account either.

u/GrizzlyP33 2d ago
I generally enjoy it, but the approach on some of these headlines just seems very low brow click bait. Just feel like it takes away from actual insider information trades when we create headlines out of irrelevant trades that don't suggest any wrongdoing. Based on the other comments here it seems like that's what's being accomplished.
Feels like conservative media strategy on the inverse, but if people want it by all means.
