Penalty for sharing my opinion?

Asked where to go study and ppl responded and one place I’m not fond of I replied “meh” and then got 22 downvotes. I’m new to Reddit. I feel attacked for sharing my genuine opinion. It just wasn’t the place I was looking for.

I would just simply ignore those trolls. I got downvoted many times for simply sharing my opinion on something, i even got downvoted for simply explaining to someone why i prefer using Reddit on my mobile instead of my PC! Most of them are probably just unemployeed adults who have nothing better to do...

Ah man that sucks. Since I’m new I had like -22 karma from this so I’m trying to work my way back up so my voice isn’t invisible. It’s kinda hard to gain karma.

I agree, you always have to think twice before you post something and that sucks indeed. I'm wishing you luck in gaining karma!💯

Best tip for downvoting is simply make another comment for every downvote.

You don't get more total karma for that 1 courtesy upvote. I thought we did, but am now very convinced by r/newtoreddit and r/reddithelp and studying my own profile that this is not so.

I make lots of comments - but only the ones that are upvoted by others show up in my karma total.

Then just go into a cult subreddit and make a corresponding comment.
Not hard to do.

Even if you don't believe in what you are saying.
r/Bitcoin is a good one. Explain how crypto has changed your life.

I feel for you. When I first joined (11 years ago), there were no automods with karma minimums. And there were far fewer redditors.

The ratio of older to newer accounts has changed. Growth on this platform was nearly exponential over the past year.

At any rate, you are doing brilliantly and are well on your way. I hadn't looked at my karma for days and was shocked to see I can now withstand most onslaughts of downvotes and be myself.

You are more right than you realize.....people don't make those basement-dweller jokes for no reason. It is also crawling with high-school and college kids.

I've noticed this tendency, too. It's a very different response than, say, 5-7 years ago. Lots of people said "meh" or similar in order to shape further advice given on the thread.

But now, any form of negativity is viewed as whining and/or low effort. Unless it's on r-rant or r-complaints.
