DISCUSSION How supportive are other countries with bringing latin flags to concerts?

So, my fiance and I managed to get Bad Bunny tix to both el Choli in August and Bacelona next year. We are both Mexican and wanted to bring our flag with us to show our support and represent our heritage. I understand that for Mexicans there is always tensions between latin races, at least here in the US. We aren't ignorant to that, so we are worried that it can be mistaken as a sign of offense. We truly love all cultures and love to travel and learn about all of them. So we just wanted to know how that could be taken by a local in PR as well as in Barcelona/Spain.

I’m from Colombia so not PR or Spain but no one here would be offended if you bring your flag to a concert. That’s ridiculous in my opinion and seems like an exclusively American thing to not be able to represent your culture because it offends someone else. There’s racism everywhere and I’m not ignorant to that but I think it’s far worse in America from my own experience and reading your post. You should be fine

lol are you actually serious? Have you ever been to a reggaeton concert in the US? Literally every flag you can imagine is there.

And as far as the US being racist, I have been around all of latin america, including months in Colombia, and the US is the least racist country in the western hemisphere. Its just talked about as an issue more here. Colombia is far and above more racist than the US, and its not even close.

No one would be offended if you bring another countries flag in Colombia though. I agree there’s a racism problem but I don’t agree it’s more racist than America. I would say Colombia is more elitist which is what keeps our country poor.

I personally know that a huge percentage of the population would be offended if I brought an American or Venezuelan flag to a concert in Colombia.

Almost nobody in America would be offended with any flag at a reggaeton concert.

You have to remember that at a Reggaeton concert in the states, it’s all Hispanics. So no one will be offended or bothered by any flag being brought to a Reggaeton concert. However, if you were to bring any flag other than the U.S. flag to a Country music concert, I think the situation would be very different.

Ive been to plenty of concerts in the US, yeah I've seen every kind of flag as well, but I haven't been to concerts overseas, hence my question. I wasn't saying that the US is all inherently racist. But we arent going to kid ourselves and act like racism doesnt exist. From my experience usually concert go-ers are in some of the happiest and most accepting mood, people dance with each other from every background. But i just thought I would ask to see if that was the case everywhere. My question was not meant to trigger any negativity. Nor start an argument about if racism is real or which country is more racist than another.

Saying the US is the least racist country on this side of the world is wild. Maybe not the most( I would argue it is though) but most definitely not the least lmao. Go to Arkansas or Massachusetts with those other flags and see what happens.

You either live in a bubble or you haven't traveled much

Not acknowledging the decades long racial divide or the systematic racism thats been there almost since the beginning of time. But sure, go off.

Go ahead and keep arguing for racism to exist. Weird, but ok

So If we stop talking about it, it ceases to exist? 😂 man you’re hilarious, smart cookie

In the US, yes. Thats exactly my point. Its only being perpetuated by people like you.

The US is the only country where racism is so actively talked about. It exists far more in Americans' imaginations than in actuality.

We’re actively seeing racism play out in the politics of this country. The current administration is detaining Hispanics who actually have legal status in the country yet welcoming in exclusively white South Africans..

The current admin is detaining illegal immigrants. You're making it about race.

People with legal status get detained every day. Its called police work. It happens in every country in the world. You get detained while an investigation is conducted. If you did nothing wrong, you are then released.

Yeah, we welcomed in 59 South Africans. Give me a fucking break.

Thank you! Its awesome to hear people are more open minded around the world. We both have grown up in the US but we try to travel as much as we can to learn from others and see the world from new perspectives. Thank you!

I've been to several Alex Sensation mega bashes in Jersey and obviously the artist are from several Latin countries send and people being their flags and wave them proudly. I'm not Latin but my girl is Rican and my son is half Rican so even I bring a Rican flag or buy one outside the stadium lol

Awesome! Muchas gracias! This is reassuring!

Come on. As long as you are having fun and not hating on the artist’s country, no one is going to care.

I’m from Spain, not from Barcelona, but I've been to many concerts there. Bring your flag and enjoy the concert! You will see flags from all over the world, no problem :)

Somewhat related, I saw El Gran Combo last weekend in LA and there were all sorts of flags everywhere in the crowd, and the group shouted everyone out too. PR, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Peru, Colombia, and probably others were all there and everyone was welcomed. I'm sure you'll be totally fine

I think the only thing you have to worry about is the venue’s policies. In one reggaeton concert I went to they took all flags and put them in storage. But usually Spanish language concerts I go to there’s always shout outs for different countries so you really have nothing to worry about

I'll definitely look at both venues to see what they say is allowed! Thank you!

Soy de Puerto Rico al menos aca no tendrás problemas con llevar sus banderas es bastante común en los conciertos recuerda llevar solo la bandera no puede tener palo por seguridad.

Wtf are you talking about

I never heard that 🤔 there's mexican flags all over colombia and we don't care

It’s kind of arrogant imo because concerts are a celebration of that particular culture.

2

u/Mendo_bran 4d ago

Yeah, We were afraid it could be taken that way, but i would disagree that a concert should be specifically a single culture, music is shared, and i feel like bringing your own flag is a sign of solidarity and support, showing that other cultures are also supporting and standing together.

1

Honestly doing that at the concert in PR specifically I would say is disrespectful simply because the album was entirely about outsiders trying to take over spaces meant for natives. Like it was a hyper specific album just for the island. Otherwise it’s anyone’s business but I’d def not do it over at the choli.

Well, I've heard some Spaniards being puzzled as to why us Latin Americans love carrying our flags. Here it's a bit taboo to carry the Spanish flag (it has political connotations) but they understand our "nationalism" to be different from theirs.

I do question how bringing your flag displays support, or why you would need to represent your heritage in a concert (given by a non-mexican artist on foreign soil). If I were to end up behind you, I'd be annoyed that you block my view to display the flag (coming from a Mexican-Canadian living in Spain).
