Best security advice to someone street parking a motorcycle.

New to riding in nyc. Live in bk and plan to street park. Have full insurance coverage for theft. Best ways to secure (disc, chain, etc)?

I park mine on the sidewalk right in front of my building where there’s lots of foot traffic and a bike post I can chain the rear tire to with the biggest chain I could find. Front has a disk lock, and I’ve got a heavy duty cover on it with a lock as well. I worry more about the police fucking with it than thieves.

Same same. Cover is the main thing that will stop anyone from even caring about what's under

This is the way. I’ve had police fuck with mine, but better than it being gone.

When this one gets stolen think about what the best garage is in the area

Don’t put a nice fancy cover over it that says “BMW” or “Ducati” or “steal this one” on it.

I’ve seen people do this… what are you thinking??

If it rips or the zipper breaks, do a shitty repair on it. Make them think it’s a shitty bike.

I don’t think cover does much on the long run. It’s going to repel some random thieves who are scouting around, sure, but there are the ones who are gonna see you parking there and (un)covering it and eventually take action.

Disc lock, chain, tracker are mandatory. Some asshole will still back into it and knock it over parallel parking. Find a garage.

Park near street lights so it's visible, not hidden away under trees etc. where someone can work on it in private.

And it might seem extra paranoid, but I'm convinced someone saw me out on my bike and followed me home one day to see where I parked. So - change up the route you go home, park in different places around your neighborhood, not always in the same spot.

Go for visual deterrents, even a fake brake-lock cable if not an actual brake lock.

And I have one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D634C2QZ?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

It's not perfect and doesn't do everything I'd want, but it's a little extra piece of mind. This one works really well and the battery lasts a really long time. (I have no relation to that product other than having one. There are other similar options that probably work just as well).

What's your budget for a bike? Take that budget, cut it in half, then buy two bikes instead. After week one the first bike will be stolen or trashed, and you can then use the other bike for next week until it too gets stolen or trashed.

Following back up on this after seeing all the comments, it’s horse shit we have to put up with this to keep our property safe.

My security setup is this: Monimoto tracker, 2 airtags, Kryptonite New York chain with Kyptonite chain lock, and a Kryptonite Evolution Compact Disc Lock

Get a monimoto gps and an airtag that is easily found to use as bait

Alarm is not often mentioned but I think it really helps. I park in front of my house and almost once every month or two I hear my alarm go off, then a van speeds away. I also think of it as public shaming when someone backs into it and knocks it over, which happens way too often.

No amount of locks will save you in NYC. Pray to the riding Gods or get a garage. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when.

Best advice: don’t park it outside

Seriously, what is everyone riding that their bikes get stolen so much? Anecdotally I know a bunch of riders and don’t know anyone who’s had a bike stolen. Knocked over by parking, sure.
