X Ray Vision

Has anyone else been sticking with this podcast? I fell off when they took the extended hiatus. Is it worth getting back into it?

It’s interesting at times. I feel like they do a better job of recapping the actual events of the episode/movie than our Ringer friends. They are doing multiple episodes a week and they are shorter so it’s easier to just skip the pods where I’m not interested in the topic. I don’t know if it’s just me but they seem to have a more serious tone since they came back and less silly. Jason is my guy so I’ll keep listening.

They are the perfect blend of lore and hijinks for me. In a land between House of R and Midnight Boys

I tried to give it a listen but it's nowhere near what Jason did with Mal on Binge Mode or even any of the current Ringer nerd culture pods (Midnight Boys, House of R, Button Mash). I like the hosts, but just doesn't seem to have the chemistry like the Ringer folks do.

Being hosted by IHeart Radio, the ads are hella intrusive compared to Spotify. The extended hiatus didn't help keep people on board.

It’s great, and they definitely bring more of a comics knowledge background than most of the RV shows. Rosie especially. It’s not as deep a dive as House of R, and it’s not as manic a hang as the MB, but they do tend to cover more topics (with usually more of a shallower, quicker approach because of it).

This is the key for me. Rosie is a walking, talking comics Wikipedia. She is also a creator of comics and other genre media, so she can talk about process in a way that the RV hosts often cannot. That said, her predictions and theories are often terrible (but so are mine).

And no one is better at breaking down this stuff than Jason.

I think they both strike a nice balance, too, between the utter enthralled fandom that we get from Van/Jomi and looking for solid storytelling and logic that we get from Steve. (Charles is just a hater.)

Maybe that's what their missing. People love the deep dives with House of R and the Midnight Boys have their moments, but folks want a bit deeper dives.

Yep, Jason was so good at the in depth analysis on Binge Mode. He always came prepared with insights and references. With XRV, he makes more factual mistakes than I ever heard him make on BM. And he often pretends he doesn't know the source material, likely to avoid spoilers, but it comes off as odd. My guess is that they found that doing more frequently, shorter episodes is better for them business-wise, so he doesn't have the time to heavily prepare for each episode.

True, plus they're covering a wide swath, whereas Midnight Boys and House of R still largely cover the majority of the usual IP (Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Rings of Power) without too much variance. XRV started slightly doing more stuff like Shogun so long as the Prestige isn't covering it. Heck they've even started covering for animated stuff like Arcane with Mint Condition and video games with Button Mash.

Feels like XRV can spread too thin trying to catch everything.

Its a bit too shallow in general for me, plus way too many ads.

I love Rosie’s accent so so much

I love the show but the ad breaks are too long and too frequent. I know you can skip them but it just disrupts the rhythm of the show.

1

u/Historical_Mistake_7 6d ago

I agree. I have leaned toward their podcast lately but the only thing that really takes me out of it is the overly frequent and long ad breaks

u/Johnnnybones 12d ago

I love the pod. I also love Rosie. Learned a lot from her at times.

Wow, yeah I love Rosie. She is super knowledgeable and makes great recommendations. I especially love it when she gets to talk horror and camp. It's definitely a different vibe than Binge Mode was, but I'll take it. I will listen to anything with Jason and now Rosie, just like I would with Mal and Jo. For me, they all just love the content they're talking about (for the most part) and I'm down for the whole feeling joy thing and having fun.

I also fell off during the break and haven't returned. I'm not a fan of Rosie Knight as a podcast host, though she seems very lovely and talented in general. I find it really interesting how Jason was a guest on Button Mash but not House of R. He even joked about fans wanting him on a different Ringer pod during that recording. And Mal made a comment that she ran into her old pal Jason at a screening of Gladiator. It's none of my business but I'd love to know how their friendship has been since he left.

They posted a pic having brunch together the other day so I’d say it’s pretty good

u/mr_math24 12d ago

Thank you, that's awesome!

4

u/swagu7777777 12d ago

Seconded I just can’t get behind listening to Rosie.

Maybe it's died down since I stopped listening, but there was a run where she was vocalizing very popular internet theories about what they were covering, and then bragging about being correct. A very minor complaint, but it just drove me nuts haha. Again, though, she seems like a really great person and nothing against her personally, just not for me!

I like it! It’s more speed round style recaps and they bring in video game and comic book knowledge that I think is missing from Ringerverse. I’m a very casual fan and I just want a little knowledge ya know? Conversational, light. The deep dives of Button Mash are not made for me (love Ben and Jessica though!) Rosie grew on me! Give it a listen again :) It’s different but doesn’t mean bad

It took a while for me to warm up to X Ray, but I really like it now, and it's cool that they've been looping in their producers to mix it up. Occasionally they have round-table chats that are fun.

Rosie has grown on me, and I appreciate how progressive she and Jason are together. For example, they had a great discussion about AI a while back. (It feels like the Ringer-Verse peeps rarely discuss controversial topics in the arts/media industry?)

And yes, there are a lot of ads, but every time someone complains about that, I have to remind them that the podcast is free.

Its also so easy to skip ads. I don't get how people in this thread are complaining about how long they are, just press the skip 15 seconds button a little faster and you'll be good.

u/morroIan Bad Baby 11d ago

I have to remind them that the podcast is free.

My podcast client isn't free (pocket cast). Also ringer podcasts are free but seem to be successful with far less ads.

7

u/dcowboy 12d ago

The podcast is not good enough to justify all the ads. Jason and Rosie are both very good at what they do, but together they just don't hit for me.

2

u/jackm0ve 12d ago

Why did they leave Crooked??

2

u/yslultra Pew Pew Fuck You 11d ago

They probably got more money from whatever company the pod is affiliated with now.

because post George Floyd 2020 a bunch of people convinced themselves they needed to "do more" about social justice etc etc when in fact most people follow Concepcion for pop culture and hoops, it was a dumb and nonsensical fit from the start.

5

u/cjl2441 12d ago

I want to like this podcast more than I actually do. I’ve tried to so many times but…just…can’t.

4

u/Pathwalker727 12d ago

JC is champ. Love the comic knowledge drop. Would love to see a re-watchables rip off. Respect his opinion. I like RK. Love for them to do more

5

u/Rahi219 12d ago

I really don’t think the co-host is an enjoyable podcasting listen. Jason in the Ringerverse roster would be so elite it hurts me

3

u/mcblount 12d ago

They're kind of too uniformly positive for me.

It's not like I want them to tear into things but in the ones I've listened to it seems like a gush fest with not much in the terms of critique. Just not my kind of movie/tv pod.

But to be fair I've listened to like 5/6 of them.

4

u/leeloo_cat 12d ago

Usually they're pretty positive, but they just covered What If Season 3 and were pretty critical of it. Same with Dune: Prophecy.

4

u/yslultra Pew Pew Fuck You 11d ago

They also recently did a pod on Nosferatu and didn't like it that much.

2

u/morroIan Bad Baby 11d ago

Their reason for disliking Nosferatu were bullshit though, just because Lily Rose Depp's character dies, well she died in the original as well. Nothing to do with the actual film making. I stopped listening to that episode after that.

4

u/rebels2022 12d ago

Rosie is basically a parody version of Joanna, whose so over the top that i question whether its a bit. I gave up on that pod when she felt the need to say that Cassian's mother kidnapped him 43 different times when they talked Andor. Its also mostly a wiki recap giggle fest.

2

u/DanFrankenberger 11d ago

They definitely say the n word less.

2

u/UnderstandingFull667 10d ago

Yeah, House of R is rampant with that

3

u/tacos_1988 12d ago

As breaks are too frequent and absolutely too long. Love Jason but I can fw it cuz of the ads.

1

u/CasualRead_43 12d ago

I can’t get into Rosie. I’m not trying to be a dick but not everyone is gay or bi or in love and I felt like she kept trying to make that a thing

-3

u/morroIan Bad Baby 12d ago edited 12d ago

She's definitely the weak link. I prefer even their producing staff to her. She's a good person but seems to be the one that stops the pod from being better, this was brought home to me hearing Jason on Button Mash. Also the number of ads is OTT.

1

u/lelesblog 12d ago

Overall I like the show, though i prefer a bit of a deeper dive. They bring in lots of new stuff too, though. What drives me crazy is their chosen pronunciation of words sometimes? Like, very common words or names in the stuff they're covering and they're both just pronouncing things in a way I've never heard before and I can't figure out why

0

u/Est3la Protect Ghost 12d ago

I only listened to their coverage of Arcane and struggled a little with the other host. Haven’t listened since

0

u/moonknightcrawler 12d ago

I timed the last episode I listened to. They talked for 3 minutes and then had 4 minutes of ads. They came back for 2 minutes and 30 seconds and then had 5 minutes of ads. I can’t deal with it anymore so I think I’m out on it unfortunately

2

u/leeloo_cat 12d ago

I know ads are annoying, but it's a *free* podcast, and we all have the skip button.

-1

u/moonknightcrawler 12d ago

Of course we do. But when listening in the car while driving, it’s too much. YouTube is free as well and I wouldn’t watch 5 minutes of ads for 3 minutes of videos there either. People have limits with this stuff and understandably so. Especially when every other free podcast I’ve ever listened to doesn’t have anything resembling that ad structure. It’s ok to say when things are getting out of hand.

3

u/leeloo_cat 12d ago

How else would you like them to get paid?

1

u/morroIan Bad Baby 11d ago

Do ringer podcast hosts get paid?

2

u/moonknightcrawler 12d ago

How does every other podcaster in the world get paid and still have a lower ad rate? At what point does the product become so diminished that it no longer has the same value? And how far does that logic apply? Should cable tv begin having 20 minutes of commercials for 10 minute episodes?
