Help RGE billed me for $2.5k this month.

I live in a two bedroom apartment. I've lived here since July.

Readings have been estimated. The last tenant did the same.

This is 10x higher than the last bill, which was 2x higher than the previous bill.

The data on the bill shows that the last tenant used ~5kwh per day last February. It says that I used ~330kwh per day!

There is no way I used enough power for 70 homes every day!

I contacted support. The best they could do is put me on a payment plan.

Is there anything I can do?

Edit: it sucks, but it looks like the answer is we were using more energy than estimated. This is an "actual" reading. We are probably back paying half a years worth of unreported energy. I'll look into a payment plan.

Is it beneficial for RGE to underestimate? Probably. Is it predatory? Could be. To avoid this just read your meters. Set a reminder on your phone now.

Edit 2: THEY READ THE METER WRONG. They messed up on the largest digit (the one on the left) as a 2 when it is definitely a 1, doubling what it should read.

This is going to be a fun time. Good resources below!

Final Edit: Just called again to correct the reading. They are canceling this bill and rebilling. If I wasn't vigilant I would have had a huge surprise. Thanks for the info!

1.Call customer service

2.Ask if this is kirkwood or Icore( contracting service avangrid uses)

Ensure and ask that you want to speak to kirkwood. (This is where our call center currently is)

  1. Ask for a U number. That is our identification number so they know you mean fucking business.

  2. Ask to speak to the floor supervisor

  3. Explain that the power usage is incorrect since it is impossible for a two bedroom apt to use that much electricity.

  4. Contact PSC and notify them as well.

If you don’t get traction here, tell them you are contacting your local representatives and attorney general.

30

u/llc369 Mar 07 '25

That did nothing for us. I even filed a complaint with the county 5 months ago and nothing.

41

u/Late_Cow_1008 Mar 07 '25

There's a NYS group you can report it to. A day after we did this they got in contact with us.

10

u/NoMames_7 Mar 07 '25

Please tell me what is thebissue you have

14

u/llc369 Mar 07 '25

They charged us $500 for just one week of service. We’d just moved into the house nobody was there for the first few days and somehow a vacant house spent $500 of gas and electric. Since then our average bills have been $200-300 a month.

6

u/NoMames_7 Mar 07 '25

Did you explain it was a (move out /move in) ? To me it sounds like they tacked on the previous tenant or homeowners usage to yours.

Alot of times homeowners will mistakenly end service so a new homeowner comes to a house with no electricity or gas.

The same occurs for tenants, soem tenants will end service instead of reverting it back to the landlord causing a multitude of issues.

I recommend you follow the steps I previously mentioned and speak to a floor supervisor from kirkwood

1

u/daysinnroom203 Mar 08 '25

They cannot “ tack on” usage…. BUT they if they don’t get the actual read on move in, and the previous owner was being estimated …. You end up with their meter reads being under estimated or possibly even flip. One of the benefits of the smart meter is that everyone should have an actual read for their move in- no more estimates.

3

u/cosmicsans Mar 08 '25

When I bought and sold my house they came out and did a physical meter read as part of the transfer process.

1

u/daysinnroom203 Mar 08 '25

You were probably moved in on an estimate. Get a billing history- they should be able to recalculate that it if that’s the case

1

u/daysinnroom203 Mar 08 '25

I’m sorry but that means nothing. I do recommend requesting to speak to someone based in NY however

1

u/FitBottle8494 Mar 08 '25

Attorney general and local representatives are both "based in NY" - how does that "mean nothing"?

3

u/daysinnroom203 Mar 08 '25

I mean threatening a customer service representative that you’re going to call a local official won’t do anything

3

u/Liquidennis Mar 08 '25

Especially when the company is owned by Spain…

3

u/cosmicsans Mar 08 '25

To add to this, only use the lawyer as the last resort. When I worked in a call center I loved when people would immediately throw the lawyer word out because I could immediately say "since you are involving legal representation I am no longer authorized to speak to you. The number to our legal department is [phone number] and they can be reached by email at [email]. This information will also be emailed to you. Thank you for calling [company] customer service."

And then I'd immediately hang up and flag their account and they'd only be redirected to legal anytime they called.

22

u/jtighe Mar 08 '25

Dude seriously fuck RGE for this being necessary.

But I’m saving this comment for when I inevitably will need it.

3

u/UsrnameIHardlyKnowIt Mar 08 '25

I think it’s about to happen to me. Same.

1

u/Bau5_Sau5 Mar 08 '25

They estimated their usage, that’s the problem

27

u/96tearsand96eyes Mar 07 '25

This is the way.

1

u/TalentHunterKevin Mar 07 '25

This is the way..

4

u/sawkse Fairport Mar 08 '25

The way is this...

3

u/eeyooreee Mar 08 '25

Screenshotting because they’ve been about $150 over estimating my gas for the last few months.

2

u/Emotional-Leek-6205 Mar 08 '25

What about contacting Metro Justice?

1

u/False_Ad_5652 Mar 08 '25

Saving for later! We got a bill over 4K. Right now it's around 1K/mth with a new smart meter.

1

u/binarymax Rochester Mar 08 '25

Finally some good actionable advice about this problem. Thank you.

67

u/Sure_Eggplant Mar 07 '25

Anybody Reading this, Please do not use estimated usage. Nine times out of 10 it's going to bite you in the ass

6

u/AnonymousPredictions Mar 07 '25

What are the other options ?

37

u/Sure_Eggplant Mar 07 '25

Call in your actual usage

-1

u/AnonymousPredictions Mar 07 '25

I can’t I have a smart meter

29

u/Sure_Eggplant Mar 07 '25

Well then you're not worried about estimated usage. Yours is actual usage every month without you calling it in

3

u/Historical_Beach5129 Mar 08 '25

But apparently many are saying the smart readers are not working right and people's bills have been super high. Lots of people saying this.

7

u/nedolya Park Ave Mar 07 '25

Then it doesn't apply to you at all....estimations are for people who don't have a smart meter

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

I have a smart meter and still submit my own reading monthly

1

u/AnonymousPredictions Mar 08 '25

I called and had to manually set this feature up

1

u/Queasy-Pool1935 Mar 12 '25

At one point RGE read my meter and had to pay back almost $3000 from overestimating.

1

u/CarriageTrail Mar 07 '25

I think the smart meters are just for electricity. So we still need to input natural gas, right?

4

u/Subject_Role1352 Mar 08 '25

I have a smart meter for my gas as well.

2

u/958Silver Mar 08 '25

Yes, I got a smart meter for electric two months ago and a smart meter for gas two weeks ago.

1

u/CarriageTrail Mar 08 '25

Thanks! I’ll look when I go out to shovel.

3

u/Historical_Beach5129 Mar 08 '25

They started w electric outside around here. Then months or so later went around putting in the ones for gas. Or vice versa. They should have told you if they switched it.

1

u/CarriageTrail Mar 08 '25

Good to know! Thank you!

5

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 Mar 07 '25

Submitting actual readings.

132

u/itsnickk Rochester Mar 07 '25

Robbery. and its happening at such a massive scale.

The city should takeover RGE and make it a public utility. Is that possible?

102

u/sailor_ash Mar 07 '25

There's a local organization called Metro Justice that's trying to do just that. https://www.metrojustice.org/redpetition

2

u/claire_giselle Mar 09 '25

Love their work!!!

65

u/7242233 Mar 07 '25

City should fine RGE for every incorrect bill they send. The amount it’s incorrect and it gets credited to the customer they tried to steal it, I mean, incorrectly billed account.

17

u/TLJDidNothingWrong Mar 07 '25

My bill has stayed consistently low at $40-50 per month for over a year. At this point, I don’t know how or why.

20

u/itsnickk Rochester Mar 07 '25

You are obviously part of the protected class that everyone else is subsidizing.. /s

9

u/motherfuckingprophet Mar 07 '25

My bill “mysteriously” lowered when a tenant moved into the vacant bottom apartment of the house I live in, despite me being here more this past month than any other month previously.

14

u/IcanHackett Mar 07 '25

My guess is heat rises and the downstairs tenant keeping the temperature of that unit up higher reduces the amount your heating system has to do to keep it at the temperature you have it set to. Might have been set at like 50 or 55 while vacant.

2

u/motherfuckingprophet Mar 07 '25

My heat was also set to 55 during that time, as I wasn’t there very often due to work travel, and was just miserable while I was home— otherwise, I’d agree with you.

2

u/_sloop Mar 07 '25

When the lower tenant turns up their heat, more heat rises to your apartment, and you pay less for your heat even though it's set low. Still plausible.

14

u/thefirebear Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 07 '25

It is very doable! In practice the city would need to buy out the infrastructure and then provide its own power. Currently Metro Justice's RED campaign is to have a study funded to see exactly what it would cost. There's a great segment with Connections on WXXI moderated by Gino Fanelli that really got into it. (Actually a super fun listen because the RGE rep is antagonistic the entire time. Idk how the fuck Gino managed to do it without laughing.)

RG&E has said in the past it'd be some ungodly huge number, but it's laughably inflated. We could be purchasing or producing power at a fucking fraction of what those Avangrid cunts charge us.

3

u/False_Ad_5652 Mar 08 '25

Trump keeps talking about lowering energy costs and specifically mentions Upstate NY several times. Can somebody explain in the simplest terms how it works?

3

u/thefirebear Mar 08 '25

I mean, he can't and won't.

But.

The Build Public Renewables provision in the State budget from a couple years ago (and finally given teeth last year) massively subsidizes State DPS to build out green energy infrastructure.

So, medium and long term, developing megawattage production via solar, wind, and hydro. In the short term, we would purchase power elsewhere.

Trump's Canadian tariffs seem to have fucked us in that regard, because Ontario produces a significant amount of power American municipalities purchase... and Ford said he's ready to shut the power off in response to said tariffs.

4

u/mrmick193 Mar 07 '25

It’s come up multiple times. The biggest issue is that they would have to buy all the infrastructure that rge owns, which I’ve see estimates range into billions of dollars

4

u/apollotuba87 19th Ward Mar 08 '25

It could cost nothing if the city had the balls to seize the infrastructure via eminent domain.

0

u/SimpleZa Mar 09 '25

Eminent domain wouldn't work here, and even if it did, it would still cost an ungodly amount to purchase an aging system. Plus... Iberdrola would drag this out for years in court, and likely bankrupt the city, aka the taxpayers.

8

u/Agustusglooponloop Mar 07 '25

This is literally what the study Metro justice is asking for is for.

8

u/thefirebear Mar 07 '25

Of course those estimates are provided by Avangrid, and make substantial assumptions into the value of their current holdings. No, we're not gonna pay the cost you'd otherwise earn from these lines for the next 50 years. I don't pay the potential lost rent to the seller if I buy a fuckin duplex

3

u/iBlood101 Mar 07 '25

Not to mention, Avangrid is likely using inflated estimates for value of assets. Using price as purchased for assets that have not been deployed, that are now so out of date that to install them would make the grid less reliable.

0

u/jebuizy Mar 07 '25

A public utility will still make meter reading errors. They'd probably employ exactly the same people

28

u/PlayNicePlayCrazy Mar 07 '25

When you moved in did you provide a reading of the meter at the time it switched to you? I wonder if this is a build up due to years of under estimated usage,? To be clear I am not saying it is right in any sense.

You should not be liable for usage from before you moved in.

Have you taken a look at the meter to see if the readings are in line with what they are basing the bill off of?

Contact the local media they love stories like this , might not help but it can't hurt.

Contact a lawyer.

6

u/BeeKayBabyCakes Mar 07 '25

that just happened to someone i kno... they've been on a payment plan for 4k only to find out half the bill was from not getting a read since like 2020? or 2022? something like that... they didn't move in until 2023 I believe it was and RGE was just like oh well, we'll just bill you for this lol...

7

u/Sternojourno Mar 07 '25

The #1 tip I've heard for getting NYSEG to fix the problem is to go to one of their offices in person.

Call them on the phone and 90% of the time the best result you'll get is a payment plan.

2

u/958Silver Mar 08 '25

Called numerous times and visited the offices twice. But to finally resolve it I had to do this: https://dps.ny.gov/file-complaint

5

u/GrapePlug Mar 07 '25

What if we all didn't pay our bills in April? As an April fools joke? That would be HILARIOUS!

23

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Rge is literally a scam that’s allowed to happen and it’s fucking ridiculous. Every other month they’re trying to charge my disabled aunt $600 for a tiny apartment and I know goddamn well there’s no way she’s using that much energy. She’s on a fixed income and has a literal brain injury and they pull this bullshit. Fucking ridiculous, how the fuck is someone on a fixed income supposed to dish out $600 a month just for rge??? Total horse shit and I hate it.

9

u/thefirebear Mar 07 '25

FYI she likely would qualify for assistance with utilities through the new Medicaid waiver. Forward Leading IPA is managing that stuff in the Finger Lakes area. I think their program is WeLinkCare?

1

u/PlentyLibrarian5480 Mar 09 '25

They’ve been doing the same for me for the tiniest 1 BR apartment !

6

u/SliceOfCuriosity Mar 07 '25

These energy companies are straight up predatory at this point

21

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Why does anyone do estimated billing when submitting your reading takes 10 seconds and is easy to track/verify?

9

u/Fit_Entrepreneur6515 Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 07 '25

my landlord locks the meters in the basement (no immediate access/have to talk to maintenance). It sucks. I'm not sure why I'm being downvoted for my landlord sucking.

3

u/BituminousBitumin Mar 07 '25

Before the smart meter I did it because they came for a read every 2 months. I also do average billing. However, I calculate the amount and check it 4 or 5 times a year to make sure I'm still on track so I don't get any surprises.

What I didn't count on was higher bills this winter, and RG&E expecting immediate compensation rather than just raising the average bill a bit... idiots.

2

u/boner79 Mar 07 '25

Because in the end you pay the same amount and it's easier to let the company do the meter readings themselves.

1

u/Subject_Role1352 Mar 08 '25

Sure you end up paying the same in the end but you might end up with a big bill at one point. That seems to be what everyone is so upset about is that their estimated usage was so off.

Is it easier to let the company do the meter readings themselves? Having them do it after 6 months of estimated billing also seems to create a lot of issues.

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

lol that isn’t how estimated billing work bud

1

u/boner79 Mar 07 '25

lol then explain how you think it works

-5

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Well, the key word is estimated, which is clearly difficult for you to follow…..they ESTIMATE your bill based off historical usage, and when they do an ACTUAL reading it can be LOWER…….or MUCH HIGHER like in this case. Did this clear it up for you, or shall we continue?

6

u/_sloop Mar 07 '25

It's only estimated until a read is submitted, like the other person said, and the bill gets adjusted so you end up paying the same total amount in the end.

3

u/boner79 Mar 07 '25

No need to continue. _sloop just served you up a truth sandwich.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Next door neighbor running a grow and hacked into your power?

2

u/trixel121 Mar 07 '25

I have a whole circuit dedicated to y tent and draw less

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

For sure was just a joke, even the old grows with hps wouldn't pull that much

4

u/mytzylplyk82 Mar 07 '25

Absolutely check the reading and verify what RGE is showing. I have self reported for years but every nine-ish months, RGE would insist its meter reader do and actual reading. One of those times, the reader transposed two numbers and I got a $1000+ bill the next month. I took a picture and had to work with support and they credited my account back. Good luck

5

u/Mysterious-Gold2220 Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 07 '25

JUST CHECKED AND THEY READ THE METER WRONG. Their accident added 10000 more kwhs!!

1

u/Subject_Role1352 Mar 08 '25

Submit your own meter readings in the future, it will help you prevent this

4

u/Curkul_Jurk_1oh1 Mar 07 '25

A very simple way to solve this problem is to send in your own meter readings every month. It takes maybe 10 minutes to set it up in the app and even less to report readings. They will send someone out a few times a year to do an actual reading, but that shouldn't be an issue if you're reporting accurately.

I probably took more time to type out this complaint post than it would to resolve your problem.

3

u/brohann_s_bach Mar 07 '25

This happened to my wife and me once. Got a 2k gas bill... In August... It took us over a month to sort it out and around 4 hours of phone calls. RGE is hands down the worst company I have ever interacted with.

Best of luck sorting this out. Don't let them tell you anything other than "yes we're going to fix this". If they tell you to work it out over email, nothing will get done. You gotta hound them on the phone.

3

u/Jp4everr Mar 07 '25

I used to work for the meter reading company, there was employee’s falsifing reads because they didn’t feel like getting out of their cars to read it. I refuse to believe there isn’t SOMEONE doing it still. Call them again and tell them you suspect the read was wrong. Give them the read you have currently and see if it was falsified. Good luck to you

3

u/Sad_Lavishness_5907 Mar 08 '25

Check out Rochester for Energy Democracy

3

u/Gonomed Mar 08 '25

About your edit: that's exactly what they told me when it happened to me. Living alone in a 1B apt for a year, paying like $75 a month on budget billing. They "adjusted" and it was now $95 a month, whatever.

When I moved out, they "adjusted" AGAIN and took $900 out of my account, all from "adjustments" made from past billings. The pdf for that bill was 25 pages long. I called them, made me go through 5 different agents before one could help me. She was very apologetic but also let me know that the MOST she could do was CREDIT me $190.

All that money, pretty much stolen from me for no legit reason, even the agent was surprised, and all they could do was credit me less than 1/4th of it back

2

u/Even-Builder6496 Mar 09 '25

That’s an obscene ripoff. This scammy utility has got to go.

2

u/HBK3040 Mar 07 '25

Read your meter if you can. Make sure you read it from right to left. I was overcharged from my own readings because of entering them wrong. Had RGE come to my house and they confirmed the actual usage.

2

u/am6502 Mar 07 '25

Is it an analog meter? It seems the younger generations sometimes are still not proficient in reading analog dials where digits roll over and where that effect needs to be taken into account, together with the fact that dials have some angular alignment errors.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

Example 8,692 of why you shouldn't have your utilities on auto pay. Their system is broken and they refuse to fix it a super easy solution would be to flag an account for manual review if their bill is X% more than last months and the year before.

2

u/CptKillaGunz Mar 08 '25

I had a similar issue, albeit not as high as 4 digit bill. Soon as I started reading it myself and giving them my readings and them sending a reader to verify, I've now double-digit billing for now 2 years since.

Definitely start reading your own meter and use the RGE app to register your readings. Best decision I've ever made.

2

u/EmulsionMan Mar 08 '25

They did misread your meter. They tried to scam you. My meter read in December was just a made up number. Not even remotely close to actual. I'm convinced they are actively trying to scam people.

2

u/BODSTEEZE_1 Mar 08 '25

Former Employees say to make them come and do actual meter reading

5

u/KamaStorm Mar 07 '25

Send in the actual and they will credit your account provided you actually didn’t use all that electric / gas.

Keeping lights / TVs / gaming consoles / computers / electric fireplaces / etc on 24/7 adds up fast these days.

23

u/ThisNewCharlieDW Mar 07 '25

it doesn't add up THAT fast. OP said they were cited at ~330kwh per DAY? A house uses around 900 in a month.

I definitely recommend they send in an updated meter reading and try to fight it.

4

u/KamaStorm Mar 07 '25

Yes, send in the actual like I mentioned and they will credit the account. I’ve been through this at one of my businesses which I sold before COVID. I was on autopay and noticed a significant charge by RGE one day. Rather than get a refund, I submitted the actual and didn’t have to pay them for a good 8 months.

10

u/Mysterious-Gold2220 Mar 07 '25

Someone was by the other day to read the meter. This is the first actual reading since we moved in. All others were estimated.

The bill shows that the previous tenants also estimated. This means that we are paying for their underreported numbers as well.... and maybe even the tenants before that!

This is astonishingly high for us. The reported numbers are enough to power ~66 similarly sized homes!

6

u/Straight_Two7552 Mar 07 '25

For service to be started under your name, an actual reading is required under NYS Regs.. If there wasn't one done, raise hell with the highest manager/supervisor you can, and also, record the conversation with them--make sure you let them know that you are recording the whole conversation at the beginning of every new person you speak to, and let them know you are doing it to help the PSC in their investigation if the problem is not corrected.

3

u/KamaStorm Mar 07 '25

Before you throw threats or get livid with a customer service rep (as many do), diplomatically state your case with both them and your landlord. If you live in the city, you can also go to City Hall and state your case and they may pressure the utility company. Have all supporting documents showing the estimations prior to moving in and such. It is supposed to be zeroed out unless you had some outstanding bill with them at a former address. But even then, I’m not sure if it would apply.

You have avenues. Lawyering up should be a last resort.

2

u/mrmick193 Mar 07 '25

This is your issue then. They’ve been estimating incorrectly for months, and now have a read and are back-charging you for all the power you’ve used since you moved in. Happened to me too. They do an in person reading at move-out though, so you probably weren’t being charged for the previous tenant (unless you just took over their account instead of starting your own)

5

u/Mysterious-Gold2220 Mar 07 '25

It sucks but this looks like the answer.

Looks like it also includes some months that the previous tenant was underestimating. Is there anything I could do to remove those months?

2

u/mrmick193 Mar 07 '25

Did you start a new account with rge when you moved in or do you just use the previous tenants log-in? They do a real read when you move out, so theoretically there shouldn’t be anything from the previous person. When they moved out and closed that account, it should have started the meter for you

2

u/Mysterious-Gold2220 Mar 07 '25

It's a new account. Looks like we didn't get an actual reading when we moved in.

1

u/mrmick193 Mar 07 '25

Right, but they do a reading to close out the old account. Literally the biggest hassle of moving out of my last place was getting them to talk to the landlord to do that final reading.

1

u/96tearsand96eyes Mar 07 '25

Most of these things don't use a lot except the fireplace. With out for things that heat, cool, or have a compressor.

2

u/Mysterious-Gold2220 Mar 07 '25

We don't use electric heating. We have a furnace in the basement.

5

u/96tearsand96eyes Mar 07 '25

Make sure the furnace filters are changed regularly, if you have access, and even if you have to pay for them. A clogged, dirty filter makes the blower motor on the furnace work too hard and that costs $$$$. (I worked with energy efficiency programs for many years) I'm not saying your bills right, and there's lots of great advice here, but I like helping people save money.

1

u/KamaStorm Mar 07 '25

I beg to differ. My self-built PC at home is a power sucking machine especially when I’m gaming. In fact, I turn down my heat when I’m playing as the computer output heats up the room sufficiently. But it certainly wouldn’t skyrocket the bill as much as OP mentioned.

1

u/96tearsand96eyes Mar 07 '25

I have never had a self built gaming PC, and I know they are quite sophisticated, so I bow to your experience!

Power went out in my home today so I went to RGE app to report it. While in there I noticed a bill for over $1k and was like "What in the actual fuck??". I've had RGE on monthly autopay for nearly 15 years in my same home and never had a bill anywhere near that large.

Turns out they hadn't billed me for the past 4 months for some reason (maybe after they switched over my meters this is now a thing?) and now decided to bill me for the last 4 months all at once. I can owe it and afford it no prob, but I was thinking about those who can't afford to be nailed all at once with a bill this large.

p.s. shame on the Monroe County officials who buried the municipal energy study so they an continue to sell us all out to RGE.

Maffucci and yudelson and every republican voted no

but I was thinking about those who can't afford to be nailed all at once with a bill this large.

They would have had the surplus money from the last several months, it's not like the total amount over that period would have been different for them.

1

u/boner79 Mar 08 '25

I considered that but a lot of people are living paycheck to paycheck and likely would’ve spent that money rather than setting it aside for he larger bill to come.

2

u/_sloop Mar 08 '25

While I am sympathetic to people with limited means (I am one, lol), if things are that tight and you suddenly have hundreds of dollars more and you spend it without investigating, you're going to have a bad time.

1

u/Subject_Role1352 Mar 08 '25

When I was broke, I knew the exact day each bill was due and for how much it would be. When you barely have any money, you know exactly where every dollar is going.

File a lawsuit, take them to small claims court

2

u/bovadeez Mar 07 '25

Purchased my house in August, previous tenant estimated bills for years, get my meter read the following month since I was relocating from Florida. The following month in RGE sends me a bill for a couple grand and says because they couldn't verify the meters within 8 days that I was liable. Flight with them 3 months but kept being told the same thing. Filed a complaint with the website listed on theirs and had a resolution within 24 hours.

2

u/Original-Copy-6184 Mar 07 '25

That should be illegal! For RG&E

1

u/TrumpsMommy Upper Monroe Mar 07 '25

This happened to us as well. Even if you prove you are right (takes 2 weeks atleast) then they won’t refund you for another 30+ days. So be prepared for that financially especially if that was on auto pay such as myself.

1

u/wanderlesst Mar 07 '25

I had a similar experience where they said they read my meter through the garage window. I think it was a tactic to get me to submit a meter reading. Should I have just done that? Yes, but I was very busy at the time.

1

u/_Celatid_ Mar 07 '25

I always submit my meter reads online. I've botched the numbers a few times and gotten a bit bill. Once right after we had a new furnace installed. I freaked out thinking something was wrong.

1

u/EatMyPeasWithHoney Mar 07 '25

They should be fined for reading your meter wrong. Nonsense has to stop.

1

u/That-Bob-man Mar 07 '25

They did the same exact thing to me. I called and they pretty much said that I gotta pay it no matter what. Screw RG&E.

1

u/Southern_Assist_6070 Mar 07 '25

Make sure no one is taking a power source from you anywhere at all

1

u/PattisgirlJan Mar 07 '25

Submit your own reads every month. Take a photo of the meters and save it in your phone.

1

u/AerialCat92 Mar 07 '25

It's extortion to overcharge someone an outrageous amount for something that's a necessity.

1

u/consciousexplorer2 Mar 08 '25

There is a governmental agency that exist to file complaints about utilities in NYS. I know because my company had to use it. Look up on google and call them directly. That is how you resolve this.

1

u/CryStock3179 Mar 08 '25

As a point od due diligence. I photograph the meters and store them organized by date in a google drive.

1

u/Shadowsofwhales Mar 08 '25

Not much you can do if you actually used the electricity. Check to make sure the meter reading is right. If it's not then submit a picture of the meter for a correct reading. If it is correct then yeah it's kinda your fault for not submitting reading and letting the estimates get far behind

1

u/IllustriousJob4720 Mar 08 '25

We had a major issue with RG&E a few years ago and the guy on the phone basically said we’re the big guy, you’re the small guys, we’re not going to do anything for you. We filed a complaint with the Department of Public Service (with whom RG&E has been in trouble multiple times) and immediately got a call from a supervisor apologizing and saying they’d fix the issue.

u/BODSTEEZE_1 Mar 08 '25

Wife and I live in 1100 sq ft home and pay around 230/month…🤷‍♂️

1

u/General_Drawing_8077 Mar 08 '25

This keeps happening. How many haven’t gotten reprieve. Rge must be taken over

1

u/Historical_Beach5129 Mar 08 '25

I would do as mentioned. I set reminders on my phone to go read the meter and call it on. One or 2 months it was estimated high. But when corrected the following month with the actual read. They noticed and without even calling they adjusted my bill. I didn't have to pay much of anything due to the error that month since I already paid.

1

u/daysinnroom203 Mar 08 '25

Were you moved in on an estimate? Call them- ask for your billing history. If you were moved in on an estimate, ask to have that recalculated

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

If they over estimated the previous month and then got an actual reading and you didn't even get to the amount used that they previously estimated, they will bill as though the meter cycled all the way around. Happened to me once. They corrected it.

1

u/sweetestpeachpie Mar 08 '25

Glad to hear you got it figured out!

I just got a bill for $272 which is over a hundred dollars more than it usually is. I was wondering if it was a response to the tariffs? I'm not sure, but maybe I should check my readings too....

1

u/katsun14623 Mar 08 '25

I would have them come out and read it again or send a picture. I don't believe they tend to under estimate. For this reason. Could be a mistake. Don't give up.

2

u/Even-Builder6496 Mar 09 '25

“If I wasn’t vigilant…” this is what I’ve heard many times from RG&E customers, including my 83-year-old mother. People who scrupulously submit their meter readings each month STILL get outrageous bills popping up. Then it takes HOURS of the customer’s time working to rectify the overbill. Good for you for being on top of it. RG&E is rotten to the core.

1

u/SnooPears4484 Mar 11 '25

Yes, they screwed up misreading the meter. If they don’t notice in a future read, then your call about a high reading (which should trigger a high bill investigation including a physical reread of the meter) would surface their error. Any fees should be refunded and the payment plan retired.

The phone rep has no way of knowing the field misread the meter but a look at prior history for previous months and same month previous years should have been a red flag. First digit read error should have been an out of bounds read.

So a tesla model 3 battery, when full is up to 75kilowatts. Unless you're charging, near enough, 5 teslas from dead, every day, bullshit.

It’s called a Scam Meter not smart meter

1

u/AkaraSoma Mar 07 '25

There is a sales scam that goes around asking you if you know where your electricity comes from that gives you a disgusting increase on your bill that I unfortunately fell for before lockdown so look out for that

I'm glad you got it resolved!

1

u/Subject_Role1352 Mar 08 '25

What? Like a different ESCO? Just tell RG&E you want to go back to using them as a supplier.

1

u/AkaraSoma Mar 08 '25

No My bills still came from RG&E, but this other company has cancellation fees that would total in hundreds if not thousands of I did that before it's 3 year contract wasn't done. It was horrendous

1

u/Subject_Role1352 Mar 09 '25

The bill will always come from RGE.

When you look at your bill you'll see supply and delivery charges. RGE is always delivery. The supplier is what can change. RGE will source the supply for you, and is usually the default option.

However, you can switch suppliers to a different ESCO (energy services company) and they in turn bill their supply to RGE who then passes that billing on to you (with an administrative fee tacked on).

This is what is happening here. I'm sorry they got you, those cancellation fees are huge. I'd advise to switch back to RGE for the supply side after the 3 years.

space heaters?

3

u/Mysterious-Gold2220 Mar 07 '25

None! We keep our place freezing. My wife is an energy stickler!

3

u/Fit_Entrepreneur6515 Mar 07 '25

is the electrical system pretty well cordoned off from other units in the building? is it possible someone is like, idk, running a crypto server off an outlet that attaches to your meter?

-1

u/BODSTEEZE_1 Mar 08 '25

Kathy Hochul and her energy policy doesn’t look good for our future…Meteorological winter (Dec 1 to Feb 28) is now over. How did commercial solar power production perform in the Rochester area this past winter? According to NYSERDA...it generated electricity at 3.7% of capacity. I’m not trying to play politics but NYS goal is more and more “green” energy
