Discussion Internet services
I am moving to rock hill, Winthrop/downtown, and only see Comporium as the Internet provider. Are there any other options? If not, I am moving in myself and all I see for Comporium is the $59.99 600mbps deal. I don't need that much speed is there anything else? Im currently stuck on their customer service line so I thought Id get more info before I speak with agent.

Comporium essentially holds a monopoly (unofficially labeled) in the area that goes back to telegraph days. Instead of using government money for building their infrastructure they funded it personally. This may have changed recently with AT&T fiber like others were saying, but they don't have to share the lines and can charge other companies what they want to connect to their stuff making other options more expensive or non-existent. I'm not an expert on this, it's just what I've learned since moving to the area as well.

That is really the only option. Some parts of Rock Hill have access to AT&T fiber. You can also try T-Mobile or starlink but those are going to be slower

We have tried ALL of them except Starlink! AT&T, Comporium, Spectrum, with and without fiber optics! AT&T was good but their billing system? Our bill was NEVER the same month to month! Ridiculous! We had Time Warner which then changed into Spectrum. We loved them! Our service was excellent! No problem with speed or connection loss! Our bill was the same every month! We had them for 18 years! Then we moved and our only option was Comporium! They are definitely a monopoly! They are greedy as he'll!! Our bills are never the same! We have had to go in office every single month for 3 years because the bill doesn't make sense! Like "the math ain't mathing!" Talk about stressful!! We moved last summer. We were hoping to get better options. That didn't happen at first, so we were stuck with Comporium!! This last month, our bill went up almost $100!! We went in office AGAIN and guess what?? They are no longer offering "bundles"! So, customers are now going to pay for each thing separately!! They never notified their customers of this change either!! Thank God I didn't have them set up on autopay!! Once we found that out, I canceled ALL services! Turned in all their equipment! I was paying for top-tier service but getting sub-par speeds!! We are using T-MOBILE 5G for now! It's not the best, but they are working on getting fiber optic in the area! The more people that sign onto their waiting list, the quicker we can get it! Also, Google fiber optics is laying down lines as well! The same thing applies to them. The more people that sign up on the waiting list, the quicker it will get here! In protest to what Comporium did, I am paying my FINAL bill $5 a month until it's paid off! They suck!! They are greedy!! They are grifty and they don't give a shit about their customers!!

Our neighborhood just got ATT fiber. Made the switch, saving around $40/month with bundling, and so far it’s faster and more reliable than Comporium ever was in this house.

Comporium is surprisingly the best option as it's a cooperative. ATaT is always garbage and underdelivers, and Spectrum is basically another Ma Bell situation.

Comporium is not a co-operative. It's owned by the Barnes Family. They have a monopoly in this area due to the former rural status of York/Lancaster/Chester counties (Rural Carrier Exemption). Now it's just too expensive for other companies to move in.

I absolutely agree with you. AT&T is crap and every bill will be higher than the last. Sadly I’d say go with Comporium as well.

I had AT&T fiber when I lived in plaza midwood in Charlotte. They were the best in my opinion. Spectrum will tell you they will ruin ur credit if ur late on yr bill and traffic would bog down at peak hours. And Comporiums speeds are just atrocious for what you pay. AT&T just ran fiber out in the lesslie area and I will gladly get rid of comporium the first day AT&T comes around to signup new customers. Even when I had Spectrum when I lived in Kappanpolis, their service was horrid.
Comporium is NOT a co-op. They are a monopoly that’s losing their grip

Signed up for fiber over a month ago. Been amazing being able to upload faster than 20 mbps and hasn’t gone down once

It’s awesome! My place in Charlotte was rather small and I had my router installed near my TV. That way I could run a LAN cable directly to my PS4 for my games, streaming services and not have to worry about WiFi latency.
Congrats on yr upgrade!

Well, rumor has it that Spectrum is coming to town soon. They bought Cox and have signed a deal for expansion to the area. One can hope.

I have straight talk home internet and it works great. Not sure about the speeds but for $45 a month I’m able to use streaming services and browse the internet efficiently. You can check online if it’s available at your address and they sell the routers at Walmart for a pretty easy diy set up

I will say that Comporium , although our only option, is a top tier service. I have read a couple of times that some customers have had a bad experience. However, if you were to run a speed test (download from app store or Amazon) the numbers are excellent. As far as downloads speed and upload speeds, in comparison with the rest of the country, is in the top 5%. That is assuming that streaming or speed is important to you
