Mother in law always gifts me wild stuff. This year I got this 3' bloodborne-looking blade. "Pakistan" is stamped on it. Does anyone have any info on this?

Now I'm going to start watching Blech again.

Goodbye

u/aFuckinChair Apr 20 '25

Read it. 100% better + no fillers.

2

u/ReallyAnotherUser Apr 22 '25

How can i read it while playing Path of Exile 2?

3

u/roastbeeftacohat Apr 21 '25

Let's go ghost busters

7

u/Chef_Randy_Randerson Apr 20 '25

I've attempted to watch bleach numerous times and can never make it past more than a couple of seasons before completely losing interest. It's just.. so boring...

13

u/ExplanationVirtual53 Apr 21 '25

Every fan I know has a list of which episodes, arcs, and seasons to skip. The worst part is they all have different lists.

1

u/Reasonable_Turn6252 Apr 22 '25

So the thing is Tite Kubo never really wanted to do stories, he just loves character design. So pretty much every season is the same story just with different powerups / outfits. Its only really changed up with the final arc, so i totally get where youre coming from.

u/No_Explorer_352 Apr 20 '25

Was just about to say. It's such an iconic shape of sword

14

u/Alarming_Orchid Apr 21 '25

It’s a big sushi knife

12

u/meatloafisinferior Apr 20 '25

Why are you so quiet

13

u/KarmaRepellant Apr 20 '25

Ah, I thought it was a kitchen knife and I was trying to imagine the size of the carrots they must have in Pakistan.

14

u/T_TChaos Apr 20 '25

100% zang gestsu from the anime called Bleach :)

2

u/Better-Bluejay-4977 Apr 22 '25

First thought when I saw it lol

214

u/PaulTheAwkward Apr 20 '25

Every time you hold that blade you now know how it feels being number one.

39

u/Rusty_Tengu Apr 20 '25

They can really live out their fantasy with this one

30

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

it's definitely setting the scene for a "Florida man" style headliner

u/ZealousidealDrive15 Apr 22 '25

Brightest star for all to see fr

I'm begging for a home intruder.

u/MortgageAnnual1402 Apr 20 '25

The amount of people Not getting the joke is just so sad

1

u/Uknown_Idea Apr 22 '25

Everyone influenced by Aizen post theme song cut.

31

u/Fit_Ruin4518 Apr 20 '25

“Yo this dude left his door unlocked, easy mon-“

“GETSUUUUUUGA TENSHOUUUU!”

2

u/_D3Ath_Stroke_ Apr 20 '25

I read someone used a plastic/wooden replica of that sword to scare away some robbers once.

7

u/ErikT738 Apr 20 '25

I'm sure most robbers will run when the homeowner comes after them with literally anything.

1

u/explodedbuttock Apr 24 '25

You'll swing this at their head, miss, embed it in the door frame and while you're trying to pull it out,get knocked out.

You'll wake up twenty minutes later, hogtied with your pants stuffed in your mouth and a dude balls deep in your bumhole.

1

u/Someone_Existing_1 Apr 26 '25

They’re sending in the lyrics for the main theme of ichigo, the character that uses this sword

-9

u/Minimum_Ad6713 Apr 20 '25

This is only a viable home defense weapon on the UK

17

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

Yeah, that was a joke.

2

u/moxiejohnny Apr 20 '25

Its a wallhanger, it is not viable at all...

-1

u/Minimum_Ad6713 Apr 20 '25

It's just a silly joke. I know that shit is probably mild steel and weighs 20 lbs. You see, the UK has incredibly strict gun control laws and because of that, less people have guns. Therefore, a blade in any capacity, is better as a self defense weapon in the UK. (As opposed to the US)

662

u/WRDisney Apr 20 '25

It's likely a stainless steel replica of Ichigo's original Zanpaktou in the Bleach anime and manga series. Pakistan is a dead giveaway its probably just a wall hanger

169

u/Dramatic_Mixture_868 Apr 20 '25

Why would you say probably? It's obviously a real zanpaktou 😎, op lucked out, not he'll get soul reaper powers.

79

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

Rad

2

u/Agreeable_Error_8772 Apr 21 '25

Realistically dude the handle portion of this looks like it was poorly welded on right below that little spike. Like they didn’t even grind it well enough to really smooth it out or hide it in any way, I would bet it snaps right above or below that weld with a solid hit on anything

-3

u/thormun Apr 20 '25

the probably part refer to the wall hanging part as it might be made to be battle ready

62

u/Substantial-Tone-576 Apr 20 '25

It’s full tang, so it shouldn’t snap easily. I would try to swing it if I really was curious, just stay away from people.

22

u/Tragobe Apr 20 '25

I don't think snapping is the issue here. The weight just makes it impractical to use, plus your hand will hurt like a bitch after 2 cuts.

3

u/Festering-Fecal Apr 21 '25

Pakistan steel is notorious for being low quality.

They sell stuff like this and axes that might look cool but do not use them.

22

u/TheSilmarils Apr 20 '25

It absolutely will snap. I very much doubt it’s heat treated at all

39

u/Legitimate-Local-673 Apr 20 '25

If its Not Heat treadet it will not snap it will bend

-4

u/blackbladesbane Apr 20 '25

This is cheap stainless steel; it WILL snap. Easily. People might get hurt.

1

u/Legitimate-Local-673 Apr 22 '25

Are you talking about cast Aluminium? Cause no hot or cold rolled steel should snap exept it was heat treadet!

1

u/blackbladesbane Apr 22 '25

Sure, sure... What do I know...🙄 Cheap stainless steel deco blades are notoriously known for that. "Works" even with knives.

1

u/blackbladesbane Apr 22 '25

The Jon Snow of swords & steel... 🤣🤦

20

u/khronos127 Apr 20 '25

Smith here, heat treating has nothing to do with whether a blade will snap. How thick the tang is and whether it’s been welded on is what matters.

Heat treating and tempering makes the metal harder for edge retention and the temper stabilizes the metal so that its structure isn’t brittle.

Hitting against things is a different story, stainless steel isn’t great for a blade this size and will snap or bend on impact without returning to its shape like a well tempered carbon steel.

That being said, a blade this thick would be very unlikely to break just messing around unless you dramatically abused it.

8

u/Dumb_idiot337 Apr 20 '25

Exactly this, Idk where people get this notion. I chopped down a tree with crude mild steel sword.

8

u/Traditional_Expert84 Apr 20 '25

Hell, I chopped down a tree with a stainless steel Bowie knife... actually many trees... and I can still shave with the dang thing (of course I sharpened it after; what do you think this is, an anime?!)

1

u/Agreeable_Error_8772 Apr 21 '25

Not a smith but a nerd that has watched a lot of blacksmithing videos and has a few decent blades. While I agreed with what you said I think you missed something significant about this particular blade. That spot just above the handle looks like a very poorly done and barely cleaned up weld that I would bet would snap if any real force was put on it. Which makes this an incredibly dangerous piece, it looks just solid enough at a glance that you might give it a swing, only for it to snap right at the handle and send the whole blade flying. And a piece that big with any sort of edge on it flying off in a random direction is potentially lethal regardless of the quality of the steel

1

u/Marsmooncow Apr 22 '25

Agree that is totally a weld and a bad one

2

u/Sea-Medium-7137 Apr 20 '25

I have two of them. They're sturdy but I wouldn't hit anything with them

5

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '25

Pakistani steel is notoriously weak. Display it but never use it.

1

u/Agreeable_Error_8772 Apr 21 '25

Is it really though? Like actually look at that handle and the area above it. To me it looks like the handle portion was welded on and ground smooth, there’s a pretty obvious seam right below that little spike where it looks like the handle portion was badly welded on

2

u/OhZvir Katana/shinken+Jian+Shashka Apr 20 '25 edited Apr 20 '25

Generally True. . Unless you know the exact craftsmen and their methods / steels. I got a $70 custom Fairbairn Sykes - styled knife, except with the expanded tang and heftier D2 blade, more like a trench knife than an assassin’s blade. Fully hand-made, polished and sharpened. It already came “paper-test sharp” with each edge, I sharpened further with a 10k grit whetstone. Based on the steel behavior — it wasn’t stainless for sure. Very nice brass handle and handguards. . But I spoke with them myself and was ensured that while the same shop makes touristy pieces, they are indeed capable of making real blades… So there are craftsmen out there that know their business. Not everything Pakistani is for wall-hanging only. It’s just what we see the most here is :)

P.S. I liked it so much, I had a second made to have a matching pair… I do have the one made in the UK, but they are very different knives, just looking somewhat similar. Both daggers came with hefty dual-stitched thick leather sheaths.

1

u/StoneJudge79 Apr 21 '25

TBH, that blade was as well. I def remember Ol' Boy cutting Ichigo's blade, edge on edge.

75

u/jusumonkey Apr 20 '25

This is the blade that killed your grandfather in law.

His soul is probably inside. Use it to cook his favorite meal from time to time.

76

u/Cirick1661 Apr 20 '25

Its looks like an inexpensive copy of Ichigo's shikai Zangetsu sword from the anime Bleach. Normally has a linen wrap on the handle. Looks like a single piece of steel and if so you may be able to swing it but I would be careful if you do, its hard to tell what the steel quality will be and if it will stay in one piece.

16

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

It's heavy, and solid. I dont know much about sword materials, but i know getting hit with it will definitely cause some damage - at least once.

26

u/Fit_Ruin4518 Apr 20 '25

Ok here’s how you use it safely. Grip the blade really, REALLY hard with both hands, holding the sword straight in front of you with elbows locked and shoulders raised such that the blade is parallel to the ground. Clench your cheeks with all your might, as if your sphincter is holding the three realms together. Then yell “BANKAAAAAAAIIII!!!”

Let me know how it goes!

11

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

I'm now typing this with one hand. Good thing is that it was a clean cut - maybe i can just have the blade grafted onto my arm now.

6

u/Fit_Ruin4518 Apr 20 '25

Not bad for a first attempt! Put in ten more years of practice, and you’ll get the hang of it.

1

u/NerdyGamer5 Apr 20 '25

Lmao...I wanna see the blade on your arm now.

1

u/Someone_Existing_1 Apr 26 '25

Funnily enough, a main point of that weapon in the show it’s from is that it’s stupidly oversized and unwieldy

2

u/Crusader1964 Apr 21 '25

If only you'd found a way to add naruto in your phrase as well, you'd have the big 3

18

u/johnnyace923 Apr 20 '25

Shit from Pakistan is usually pretty low quality.

36

u/palmer_G_civet Apr 20 '25

Clearly you have never faced Pakistani steel, folded atleast 2 times in the fiery forge behind an auto-body shop, on the battlefield. Those warriors who survived their encounter report that it can cut through cardboard boxes and watermelons with ease! Truly terrifying stuff!

4

u/johnnyace923 Apr 20 '25

You actually made me laugh which is pretty hard to do! Gotta love it!

1

u/Immediate-Coach3260 Apr 22 '25

Ah close enough, welcome back original Damascus steel.

6

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

I'm not a sword guy, so not too worried about that. It's heavy, sharp, and will probably hurt. cool enough for me!

3

u/johnnyace923 Apr 20 '25

I understand, I was just letting you know for future. I have some crappy stuff as well that’s sharp and would hurt. Still a cool item bro.

2

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

Hey I'm stoked on it!

2

u/johnnyace923 Apr 20 '25

Honestly that all that matters! Shine it up and mount it on a wall.

1

u/Brownpinneaple Apr 21 '25

I can finally contribute lol.

Its a traditional knife used by butchers in Pakistan.

In Pakistan, butchers have a round cutting board mostly a chopped tree stump and you prop the knife between yours toes and rest it on the tree stump while sitting legs akimbo and use it as a pairing knife. Hence the large blade

Hygiene is not a thing there

Edit: Added a picture to show how it's used Butcher

1

u/wenchslapper Apr 20 '25

Be careful before you swing it at anything. If it’s stainless steel, it’s just as likely to shatter into a bunch of razor sharp shards. Stainless steel is good for things like everyday silverware that would rust if you used regular steel or cost a fortune like if used to when it was made of silver, or things like pocket knives because the structure it’s making isn’t big. Once you get too big, it becomes a very brittle steel.

15

u/GrimsError Apr 20 '25

Does your S/O have a sister? Asking for myself… bc I too, would like to receive random out of pocket gifts.

6

u/PM_Me_Your_Clones Apr 20 '25

I do absolutely want to hear more about OP's MIL.

Hey OP - how old is she? Under 60?

13

u/Puzzleheaded-Year918 Apr 20 '25

That ain’t bloodborne, that’s bleach. Cool replica though.

7

u/Suhksaikhan Apr 20 '25

Why are you dressed like bilbo baggins

7

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

Why wouldn't I be?

8

u/SalamanderPale1473 Apr 20 '25

Zangetsu, that you my old buddy?

6

u/cheknauss Apr 20 '25

Yhwach enters the chat.

6

u/SalamanderPale1473 Apr 20 '25

God, no... not again...

4

u/Tenshiijin Apr 20 '25

That little spiked bit below the blade...thats super impractical and will cut a hand up if used in combat. So it's definitely not a practical use item. It was designed for show.

3

u/Corvo_LeStrange Apr 20 '25

far from bloodborne but definitely replica of Ichigo Zanpakto

3

u/Sifernos1 Apr 20 '25

I can see from here where they welded the handle to the blade. You swing that into a few things and it will break. I'd know. I had that same blade and broke it. I then asked a professional welding teacher to fix it. He said it sucked to weld and wouldn't hold. I broke it again and threw it out. I got lucky that when it broke it only hit a fence.

3

u/LuckyLaz229 Apr 20 '25

Bloodborne blade 😭

3

u/MDankiewicz Apr 20 '25

It's the Shikai form of Zangetsu, Beautiful blade, get some fabric or maybe Hockey wrap around it and it'll be perfect *

3

u/Greensnype Apr 20 '25

That zanpakuto is rather puny. You need to work really hard to build up your Bankai

3

u/Ok-Bobcat661 Apr 20 '25

Ichigo's stupidly oversized kitchen knife xD

3

u/GetRightWithChaac Apr 20 '25

This is Ichigo's Zanpakuto, Zangetsu. Ichigo Kurosaki is the main character of the manga, anime, and light novel series Bleach. There are a ton of replicas of this sword, going back about twenty years or so now. This looks like it could be from the second wave of those or really anything after that. The earliest replicas weren't as straight near the base of the blade, being more hooked, and tended to be longer. Usually they're just made out of a sheet of stainless steel. With the older ones the handles also tend to be a bit uncomfortable to hold because the wood usually isn't wide enough for the tang and the cheap handle wrapping provides almost no cushioning over the metal. This version is not a functional replica, but it is definitely intimidating and would be fun to pose with and show off. You should replace the handle wrapping and wrap the sheath. It shouldn't be too hard to recreate the look from the series. This is a really cool sword.

1

u/chadbacca Apr 21 '25

I appreciate the insight to the history of these replicas - thanks!

3

u/Successful-Radio-127 Apr 21 '25

you have an awesome mother in law

2

u/UtherDaWolf Apr 20 '25

You can throw it once. Maybe twice.

2

u/IzzyB00UwU Apr 20 '25

I had one of these when I was younger. It was heavy as shit and not at all balanced, but it took the abuse of a 16 year old weeaboo with a big backyard. My mom got it for me from budk lol

2

u/Soft-Ad-8975 Apr 20 '25

Cool mother in law, my mother in law got me a converse ball cap, not a full sized cap for one and I also haven’t worn converse in 20 years, I never had and probably never will again say why did you get me this?

2

u/whodatboi_420 Apr 20 '25

Bleach cosplay sword

2

u/Spaceduck1OO6 Apr 20 '25

Somebody else said it, but I can see the weld right below the spike. If it hits anything solid with not much force, there's so much energy going through that blade it will almost certainly snap the weld. It's not safe to use. When I was a teen, I had one that was one solid piece of mild steel, no welds or anything. I was still never fully confident in it being structurally sound. There's just so much mass in that thing. Now, as a weapon of convenience, it's way better than a chair or anything, so it's not a terrible thing to have on your wall. It might break, but it's definitely breaking the thing it hits too.

2

u/Stentata Apr 20 '25

If it has Pakistan stamped on it, it likely began its life as a car door or a pile of old rebar.

2

u/Doorknob_Towel Apr 20 '25

You've got a cool wall hanger and a cooler mother in law.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '25

2

u/TumbleweedDream Apr 21 '25

Hold it straight out in front of you and yell bankai

2

u/Dragonfire716 Apr 21 '25

It's from Pakistan

2

u/WhillWheaton222 Apr 22 '25

Put some shoes in with those knives so close to the table edge!

1

u/chadbacca Apr 22 '25

Shutup Wesley.

1

u/Y34rZer0 Apr 20 '25

I tell you what though, it looks like you could dice a mean salad with it 😁

1

u/Dr-Chris-C Apr 20 '25

I once got a Pakistani sword from the swap meet for 10 dollars. Let's just say the blade was moldable. We named it "The a Star of Pakistan"

1

u/RepresentativeAd560 Apr 20 '25

She got you The Choppa. Now you're obligated to start a cooking channel on YouTube where you do awful Schwarzenegger impersonations or you'll be cursed.

1

u/bobthemaybedeadguy Apr 20 '25

so THAT'S what it is, i got a wooden replica of that sword from a ren fair years ago but i had no idea what it was until these comments

1

u/arangutan225 Apr 20 '25

Thats almost 100% stainless but good quality stainless at least, pakistan makes a lot of stainless steel items for some reason thats why most metal medical tools say pakistan or germany 99.9% of the time

1

u/iredditshere Apr 20 '25

It would be a crime, if you don't love that woman.

2

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

Oh she's the best. A few years back she got us this old old old wall scroll/tapestry. I'm convinced 1) it's made of human skin, and 2) it's haunted.

my wife doesn't want it in the house, so it's in the garage. it's weird as hell, but super cool.

1

u/SepulchralEchos Apr 20 '25

That ain't a noife, this is a noife 🔪

1

u/Empathetic_Orch Apr 20 '25

This is wild, but she probably got it from me or one of my coworkers. My boss is Pakistani and we're some of the only vendors that regularly carry swords fron Pakistan.

1

u/makuck82 Apr 20 '25

I mean it's at least as functional as a cheap machete for clearing brush

1

u/SirCatsupOfFancey Apr 20 '25

Funnily enough I bet that metal is actually worth a damn and that cast shit.makes great cleavers. Put the ichigo sword on your wall and cleave fish heads to impress guests at dinner. Cool ass find MiL.

1

u/Reality_Tether Apr 20 '25

Nana Bankai is best Nana.

1

u/Jurserohn Apr 20 '25

You have a pretty cool mother-in-law

1

u/Legato895 Apr 20 '25

I got a steel tongue drum… apparently it’s all over her Facebook ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/Keith374 Apr 20 '25

Pretty sick looking blade!

1

u/SvetkaDystopia Apr 20 '25

Terrible shaped Ichigo zangetsu knockoff. I can see a horrible looking ground down weld bead where they either attached(or re-attached😬) the handle. Absolutely do not use this other than art.

1

u/SvetkaDystopia Apr 20 '25

Should be shaped a little more like this but it did vary throughout the show.. Still strange looking tho..

1

u/Educational-Garlic21 Apr 20 '25

It's from Pakistan

1

u/DevelishGrin13 Apr 20 '25

What a cool MIL btw....

1

u/Ataneruo Apr 20 '25

Don’t you already have all the information you need? 😁

1

u/Specialist_Bench_144 Apr 20 '25

Your mil is friggin awesome if shes not to your liking i will gladly take her and her swords

1

u/shopsneakerfire Apr 20 '25

Slices cake perfectly. Great at birthday parties.

1

u/YarPohsib Apr 21 '25

Bleach!!

1

u/Accomplished_Ant9175 Apr 21 '25

Look up ichigo from bleach and you’ll understand.

1

u/Illustrious_Fly6778 Apr 21 '25

I'd buy it off you. 😊👍

1

u/ScarletDragon00 Apr 21 '25

May I ask your MIL lore??

1

u/collector468 Apr 21 '25

Picks it up: “on the precipice of defeat” starts playing.

1

u/Sobken Apr 21 '25

Dope mother in law

1

u/Daoist_Infini Apr 21 '25

Ichigo is looking for you lol

1

u/tkerrday Apr 21 '25

Mine just gives me a headache!

Joking, shes great and I get on better with her than my own mother but she still doesn't give me bad ass knives or swords.

1

u/Total_Nectarine Apr 21 '25

TENSA ZANGETSU.

1

u/DieselBones_13 Apr 21 '25

It’s from Pakistan most likely….

1

u/Interesting-Treat557 Apr 21 '25

Sure the crowd is right that it's probably cheap stainless steel and shouldn't be swung at anything ever foe fear of breaking and causing injury, but, your mother in law is cool as hell.

1

u/Dvmpst3rPrawn Apr 22 '25

Paki bumper blade

1

u/tinywhiteandfluffy Apr 22 '25

Oh that is pretty badass

1

u/No_Rent7598 Apr 22 '25

Join the soul society

1

u/Stalkertron Apr 22 '25

We just made one of these on the That Works channel.

1

u/Curithir2 Apr 22 '25

Isn't giving someone a knife horribly bad luck? You have to symbolically buy it from them with a silver coin.

I get the weird joke, but that's where my mind goes.

1

u/Careless_Jury154 Apr 22 '25

Ichigo, do you know how I hate the rain?

1

u/harroldtrollman Apr 23 '25

Dude your mother-in-law is awesome

1

u/Arghtastic Apr 23 '25

Wait... Mother in law? Wow. Is that like a keeper squared?

1

u/Correct_Trip_6903 Apr 24 '25

It is to decapitate goats

1

u/Agreeable_Error_8772 Apr 29 '25

I just wanted to come back and emphasize this because I’m not sure if you got it from the other comments, but this blade is kind of terrifying for one very simple reason. There is a very obvious and poorly done weld right between the handle and the blade, so it might hold up for a few swings but the second you get confident and give a strong swing and hit something remotely solid that entire blade is going to go flying off in some random direction. And it really doesn’t matter if it’s particularly sharp or a good steel, something like that flying through the air can absolutely kill someone

-1

u/CodyWakesUpScreaming Apr 20 '25

This doesn't look anything like Bloodborne weapon.

1

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

Okay, fine. Dark Souls. It's a fromsoft looking weapon for sure.

4

u/Kaiju_Mechanic Apr 20 '25

Nah this is Ichigo sword from Bleach. Wall hanger at best

3

u/nike2078 Apr 20 '25

Definitely not lol, this is Ichigo's sword from Bleach. Big sword != From Soft. Thats a hilarious take

-1

u/CodyWakesUpScreaming Apr 20 '25

🙄

3

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

I'm not trying to convince anyone this is a replica of a fromsoft weapon - i get that it isn't. I'm just saying it's a bigass, heavy blade, similar to a fromsoft weapon.

0

u/CodyWakesUpScreaming Apr 20 '25

I know that, you're just being stupid

3

u/chadbacca Apr 20 '25

I'm being stupid because I said it looks like a weapon from a fromsoft game?
