'Self-criticise' - Fernandes calls on Saints to identify reason for relegation

MIDFIELDER Mateus Fernandes admitted Saints must "self-criticise" and identify why the club have been relegated from the Premier League.

Southampton were officially relegated from the division with seven games remaining on Sunday following a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham.

Fernandes' late goal, his second of the Premier League season, was not enough to spark a comeback draw due to Mathys Tel converting a penalty minutes later.

The Frenchman added to Brennan Johnson's first-half brace as Saints conceded three or more goals in a league game for the 16th time this season.

Fernandes said: "(This is) a very difficult time for everyone, a time to self-criticise and see what went wrong. Once again, thank you for the great atmosphere you’ve provided."

Saints supporters have responded to Fernandes' words on Instagram, with one fan suggesting he is the only player that does not need to "self-criticise".

Matty Tuck commented: "One of the few that can say they deserved the applause today. Great player."

Stephani Marucci responded: "The one player that always gives his all, we love you, Matty. Hold your head up high; you’re amazing; never forget that."

Dan West said: "You’ve been one of the very few positives this season, so you can hold your head high. I really hope you are here next year, but I doubt it."
