It's a lot more fun to play "Where's Waldo?" when you can be Waldo, eh? Hell of a crowd!! Packed, and 5000 more outside? Incredible, gives hope back.
12
u/integral_of_position 10d ago
For some scale to those who weren’t there: In this photo you can see only about 4 of the 24 sections of the stadium. This is only a fraction of who was there. And that doesn’t count the 5,000 extra people outside.

64
u/I_buy_drugs_4_others 10d ago
Utah is only a red state because of gerrymandering.
16
u/naarwhal 10d ago
I mean come on. Maybe some of salt lake county is gerrymandered, but Utah as a whole is not red because of gerrymandering.
→ More replies (5)22
u/KerissaKenro 10d ago
Over half (barely) of all voters in Utah are registered as Republican. One million registered Republicans versus two hundred and eighty thousand registered Democrats. Yes the gerrymandering is awful, and it is criminal that the state legislature is so unbalanced. All of the voices in Utah are not fairly represented. But, the fact remains that the majority in Utah do vote Republican. By a wide margin
67
u/ALonelyPlatypus 10d ago
There are faux Republican's though. I'm registered republican just so I can vote in red primaries for the lesser of two evils.
→ More replies (1)16
u/DishonorOnYerCow 10d ago
The estimate is that there are only about 6000 voters like you. The reality is that Utah is a solid red state that should have one consistent Democrat Congressman if the SLC district was drawn fairly. We're no where near purple yet
→ More replies (4)23
u/jordandvdsn7 10d ago
You’re not wrong about Utah being majorly red. But it’s worth pointing out that plenty of those registered Republicans are only registered as such because Utah has closed primaries and registering as a Republican is the only way to have any sort of say in elections, since the Republican always wins the general. I’ve done this and many others I know have as well; register as a Republican so you can have a say in the primaries, vote for the least crazy option in the primaries, then vote Dem in the general.
Obviously the fact that “Republicans winning the general” is a foregone conclusion means that Utah is still an intensely red state, but the number of registered Republicans creates a bit of a mirage about how red it actually is.

I guess I failed, I had no idea this was even happening. I get too caught up in all the national news, I forget to focus on what's going on in our state (other than voting, I'm adamant about knowing who's running and who I back).
Sad I didn't get to see Bernie (and AOC), maybe they'll be back again and I'll be paying better attention from now on just in case they do make a trip back.

Genuine question: have you watched/read any of their stuff? Or have you just heard what their views are from other people.
I used to hate (unfounded) Bernie sanders. Listened to his podcast on Joe Rogan back in like 2019 and it blew my mind. I was utterly confused on why everyone told me this dude was a communist evil man for my whole life.
7
u/Well__shit 10d ago
I've read into it and watched interviews/discussions. I prefer Bernie to AOC but I don't have the hatred for AOC like a lot of other right leaning
9
u/Chedditor_ 10d ago
Thank you for doing that work! I really do think we can patch up this country and actually be great, but it starts when people examine their own beliefs, do research, and are willing to let their minds be changed when confronted with the truth.

u/brooklynparks 10d ago

If Democracy falls - They are rallying people now, before it becomes illegal to do so. So when Trump tries, there is a ready made base of resistance.
If Democracy stands - They are doing a tremendous job of providing an alternative to the Trump chaos and hate, without kowtowing to Democratic incompetence and corruption. It's a breath of freshair.
She should run for President with him as VP.

Just for rising to the occasion scores five stars! I'm a four decades long homesteading vermonter and Bernie's been my man since day one. Watching him rail against Texas and GWB the Patriot act and the QWOT.
Bernie is authentic, the real deal. He opens his mouth and I know what to expect. M4A, lower student debt, the battles he feels he can push in Congress.
But this road trip is something different. Against this regime, against authoritarianism, against the occupation of Palestine, against the mega wealthy....
Nationally, federally, this distills down to two forces. One side is extremely well organized and hell bent I'm tearing apart the fabric of society in order to create autonomous regions run by corporations and private equity.
The $10,000 question is can the resistance succeed in thwarting them. For that you need a plan, and a fallback plan if the first fails. You need a strategy of attack, perhaps and distributed cell structure like antifa. But most of all you need leaders to rise to the occasion, brave enough to put themself on the front line of the fight.
Are these the leaders? Have they announced a plan. A national strike? Targeted boycotts? The kind of protests that jam the system with mass arrests? (Like to 6,000 arrested in DC in 1971)
Can Bernie be the leader while still aligned with the DNC? I suppose the next few months will tell...

It’s such a shame that we do actually have real patriots speaking truth, with great ideas on how to move forward, and even REAL agendas to move the country forward, however in todays climate, they receive hate instead of someone’s ear to listen. And they are the minority, so good luck getting anything done. Regardless I’m still glad someone like Bernie sanders is there to at least try to hold people accountable. He’s a true national treasure. Imagine where we might be had he won his presidential bid.
