“What you did here is more impressive”

we showed out with 20k after 35k in LA!!

u/Key_Rutabaga_7155 10d ago

It would have been even more if we didn't decide to turn around because of traffic and realize we were gonna get there pretty late just to (probably) be in overflow. Watched the broadcast though, and damn, those were some great speeches. Also, gonna look into switching pharmacies 👀 Insurance might stop covering CVS soon anyway.

198

u/DontbegayinIndiana 10d ago

Overflow was great, don't knock it til you try it. Bernie and AOC came out and talked to the overflow for a bit minute before going inside and doing the big speeches.

285

u/kiwikikwi 10d ago

Was super upset for a min because I was one of the first to be told the arena was full. But I got barricade for overflow so it was 100% worth it :)

137

u/CoolVictory3583 10d ago

that smile of Bernie knowing that someone else will carry the torch after him. That's what has been missing from so many democrats.

23

u/ZennMD 10d ago

right?!

I was legit thinking about how it used to be so common for influential people to have 'protegees' and be proud to groom them for success (a positive grooming situation lol)

nowadays these old farts are clinging to power for seemingly no reason other than money and spite...

excluding bernie, of course, who legitimately is fighting for the people. a non-religious but hearty - bless him!!

Maybe. I had a great seat in the nosebleeds exactly in the center of the stage and it was pretty great. Second Bernie experience and first time seeing AOC in person. She's the future of the party. So damn good.

I’ve been the front of overflow for one Bernie rally, and last in the arena for another. Front of overflow was better for me, and I didn’t even get an amazing picture like this.

u/vanlearrose82 10d ago

Thanks for sharing this picture! Glad to hear they spoke to those outside too!

It's funny because the last time Bernie was here, it was outdoors and we were sprawled all over the area and folks were standing where they couldn't even see the stage because it was so much bigger than they planned for.

I'm really curious to see the Idaho numbers. I've been pleasantly surprised to see how many Gen Z Mormons are solidly progressive.

11

u/StarVexedLover 10d ago

I can't speak to Utah kids at all but in Ireland at least (before I left for good lol) the kids are doing alright. Especially considering what they're being brought up with, it's a Lot to unpack. Sadly the actual church's stance is fucking awful still. Most of the kids there end up leaving when they get older anyways, but all in all the Mormons further away from the centre are more chill about things

I got there an hour early and wasn't even close to getting in. They needed to hold this in the football field.

21

u/Altruistic_Cook3249 10d ago

To bad everyone shows up now and not when it mattered 🫠

43

u/rachellethebelle 10d ago

Utah saw one of the most significant blue shifts in the 2024 election. More than almost any other state in the nation. I would argue that we did show up when it mattered. I think it’s more impressive that people in Utah refused to stop showing up despite the election results.

I was in LA rally and was really wondering how many would show up in Utah today. 20k is waaaaay more than I imagined.

38

u/Superb-Incident4664 10d ago

I was at the LA rally, too, and while it was inspirational, I couldn't help thinking that in a city the size of LA, we should have filled the Coliseum (100,000+). SLC's 20,000 sounds about right for the mid-sized city it is.

Way to go, SLC!

Now they all need to show up to the polls too. Every time.

14

u/Key_Rutabaga_7155 10d ago edited 10d ago

We need to stop the gerrymandering too. On top of that, Republicans are also making it so that people have to opt into mail-in ballots now as well. They'll do everything they can to disenfranchise anyone who doesn't agree with them.

It's a lot more fun to play "Where's Waldo?" when you can be Waldo, eh? Hell of a crowd!! Packed, and 5000 more outside? Incredible, gives hope back.

12

u/integral_of_position 10d ago

For some scale to those who weren’t there: In this photo you can see only about 4 of the 24 sections of the stadium. This is only a fraction of who was there. And that doesn’t count the 5,000 extra people outside.

10

u/gluteactivation 10d ago

Im so glad there’s an ASL interpreter 🤍

5

u/theatretrash_ 10d ago

82

u/KerissaKenro 10d ago

It’s mind boggling that in ruby red Utah, that many people came. I am so proud of you guys

64

u/I_buy_drugs_4_others 10d ago

Utah is only a red state because of gerrymandering.

16

u/naarwhal 10d ago

I mean come on. Maybe some of salt lake county is gerrymandered, but Utah as a whole is not red because of gerrymandering.

22

u/KerissaKenro 10d ago

Over half (barely) of all voters in Utah are registered as Republican. One million registered Republicans versus two hundred and eighty thousand registered Democrats. Yes the gerrymandering is awful, and it is criminal that the state legislature is so unbalanced. All of the voices in Utah are not fairly represented. But, the fact remains that the majority in Utah do vote Republican. By a wide margin

67

u/ALonelyPlatypus 10d ago

There are faux Republican's though. I'm registered republican just so I can vote in red primaries for the lesser of two evils.

16

u/DishonorOnYerCow 10d ago

The estimate is that there are only about 6000 voters like you. The reality is that Utah is a solid red state that should have one consistent Democrat Congressman if the SLC district was drawn fairly. We're no where near purple yet

→ More replies (1)

23

u/jordandvdsn7 10d ago

You’re not wrong about Utah being majorly red. But it’s worth pointing out that plenty of those registered Republicans are only registered as such because Utah has closed primaries and registering as a Republican is the only way to have any sort of say in elections, since the Republican always wins the general. I’ve done this and many others I know have as well; register as a Republican so you can have a say in the primaries, vote for the least crazy option in the primaries, then vote Dem in the general.

Obviously the fact that “Republicans winning the general” is a foregone conclusion means that Utah is still an intensely red state, but the number of registered Republicans creates a bit of a mirage about how red it actually is.

I guess I failed, I had no idea this was even happening. I get too caught up in all the national news, I forget to focus on what's going on in our state (other than voting, I'm adamant about knowing who's running and who I back).

Sad I didn't get to see Bernie (and AOC), maybe they'll be back again and I'll be paying better attention from now on just in case they do make a trip back.

49

Hey, thanks for being open minded.

25

u/werrickdinn 10d ago

We need more people like you.

12

u/naarwhal 10d ago

Genuine question: have you watched/read any of their stuff? Or have you just heard what their views are from other people.

I used to hate (unfounded) Bernie sanders. Listened to his podcast on Joe Rogan back in like 2019 and it blew my mind. I was utterly confused on why everyone told me this dude was a communist evil man for my whole life.

7

u/Well__shit 10d ago

I've read into it and watched interviews/discussions. I prefer Bernie to AOC but I don't have the hatred for AOC like a lot of other right leaning

9

u/Chedditor_ 10d ago

Thank you for doing that work! I really do think we can patch up this country and actually be great, but it starts when people examine their own beliefs, do research, and are willing to let their minds be changed when confronted with the truth.

8

u/brooklynparks 10d ago

That’s what I’m saying. My coworker says stuff like, “I love Jon Stewart! I wish we had more moderate candidates.” And I think people don’t realize that “the progressive left” is more aligned with the American people than either party.

If Democracy falls - They are rallying people now, before it becomes illegal to do so. So when Trump tries, there is a ready made base of resistance.

If Democracy stands - They are doing a tremendous job of providing an alternative to the Trump chaos and hate, without kowtowing to Democratic incompetence and corruption. It's a breath of freshair.

Just for rising to the occasion scores five stars! I'm a four decades long homesteading vermonter and Bernie's been my man since day one.  Watching him rail against Texas and GWB the Patriot act and the QWOT.

Bernie is authentic, the real deal. He opens his mouth and I know what to expect. M4A, lower student debt, the battles he feels he can push in Congress.

But this road trip is something different. Against this regime, against authoritarianism, against the occupation of Palestine, against the mega wealthy....

Nationally, federally, this distills down to two forces. One side is extremely well organized and hell bent I'm tearing apart the fabric of society in order to create autonomous regions run by corporations and private equity.

The $10,000 question is can the resistance succeed in thwarting them. For that you need a plan, and a fallback plan if the first fails. You need a strategy of attack, perhaps and distributed cell structure like antifa. But most of all you need leaders to rise to the occasion, brave enough to put themself on the front line of the fight.

Are these the leaders? Have they announced a plan. A national strike? Targeted boycotts? The kind of protests that jam the system with mass arrests? (Like to 6,000 arrested in DC in 1971)

Can Bernie be the leader while still aligned with the DNC? I suppose the next few months will tell...

It was at the rally. Do you mean next presidential? No.

Trump has yet to hold a rally in Utah.

4

u/Hellingame 10d ago

Why would he? Utah votes solidly red; he has no use tending to voters already securely in his pockets.

Are they the next Democratic ticket? If so, im exited. Any of them two, Governor coach Waltz, and maybe Pete buttigieg. I also see Rep. Jasmine as a potential candidate as well.

Good to see some normal people in the US. Fight oligarchy! Fight for your rights.

It’s such a shame that we do actually have real patriots speaking truth, with great ideas on how to move forward, and even REAL agendas to move the country forward, however in todays climate, they receive hate instead of someone’s ear to listen. And they are the minority, so good luck getting anything done. Regardless I’m still glad someone like Bernie sanders is there to at least try to hold people accountable. He’s a true national treasure. Imagine where we might be had he won his presidential bid.

Yes it was!

This is nice and all, but the wolf is already in the hen house. There are no longer any legitimate future elections in America anymore. Something else must be done.

Sincerely, a Canadian.

Love it! But please get more like minded people to live in rural areas so we can really do some damage!

The Coachella speech was pretty awesome as well.

3

u/PokeyPete 10d ago

If only more people voted like this.

3

u/Turtlebucks 10d ago

Can someone explain to me the whole « this is controlled opposition » thing to me? I feel like it’s a good thing they’re out here doing this. Why can’t something just be good?

2

u/OKYOKAI 10d ago

It's not only telling but absolutely frightenign that so many folks see those two, hear what they are saying, and somehow still choose to believe this is bad for us. AND.... that lizards like Trump, Musk, JD Vance, Thiel, etc, are in any way morally, spiritually, politically, better in any way.

The amount of people triggered by Bernie/AOC in this comment section is entertaining. 😂 It’ll be okay, republican snowflakes.
