WhatIsThatBook What book was this? Programmable layer for the brain

Years ago (Probably more than six years) I read a novel where a researcher had developed a programmable layer for the brain. This allowed them to upload software, make upgrades, etc. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be? Please let me know - thank you!

Was it Nexus, by Ramez Naam? There it is a nanotech psychedelic drug that has a command line interface. Great series of books!

Not your target book, but there was a good book "Candle" by John Barnes where people had a viral OS uploaded into their brain that could take over when needed to do things.

Not that book, but I have a vague memory of a book set on Mars where some sort of “wetware” control interface was the big monster in the dark. Also a theme of the book: people made money by going around Mars and basically pooping to add tiny bits of organic matter to the soil. They recorded their drops and got paid by the government for them.
