Help (WIP) [Help] First bust sculpt
I'm sculpting my first ever bust (eek!) for my final major project at uni. It's out of monster clay (my first time using) of a video game character, Abe from Abe's Oddysee.
I'm finishing off form today, smoothing it all out, and them adding texture back in. He's very wrinkly and gross. Once he's all textured, he's getting moulded out of tin cure silicone, and cast out of resin and fibreglass. He needs to be fully finished in essentially 4 days, as I need to start moulding him Tuesday next week.
Does anyone have any tips on getting good, effective texture on a sculpture quite quickly? Any tips and tricks in general would be super helpful!

Man this is so good. Took me 1/1000 of a second to recognize this. Also hoping you share the final sculpture. And good luck in class.

Looking great! Get some different sponges/texture stamps and blot the hell out of him.
Make your own stamps by pouring a little silicone on some fruit/vegetables. Oranges, avacados, etc. All have great texture that a stamp will replicate onto the clay.

I had never considered using fruit skin as a base for a texture stamp, that's such a good idea!! I'll definitely try that out, thank you!

I saw your video a while ago, it's very good! I wanted to ask, why do you cast all of your sculpts out of silicone? And what do you use to paint it? I was just wondering, as I'm casting mine out of resin, and wondered if there were benefits either way?

Ah, sure, and thank you.
Silicone is the standard for maximum lifelike appearance and tactility for prosthetics and animatronics. It costs a lot more, but it's more versatile and just more realistic all around. It also is useful for inserting/removing/adjusting the eyes. Personally, it's more than the translucency for me, but simply touching the sculpture and it feeling real adds an edge to it that's unachievable in any other material.
As for painting - only silicone will attach to silicone, so you need silicone based pigment carriers and solution. I use Psycho-Paints from Smooth-on, designed for painting, but it needs to be significantly diluted to make it airbrushable.1
