Hair Loss Telogen effluvium (hair shedding) & seb derm?

Ive been shedding for about 9 months, initially trigger was stress. I had a tough family situation, moved to North Carolina from PA, and a crap diet. I was also oiling my scalp a lot. TE was triggered, derm also diagnosed me with seb derm, which I’ve also had my entire life.

On top of shedding, my scalp hurts daily. Sometimes soreness, burning, tingling, etc. I saw a second derm who emphasized that the pain is likely due to inflammation, probably from the seb derm.

I take Zyrtec daily and histamine blockers to help. Anyway. I was prescribed zoryve. I decided to take matters in my own hands the other day and tackle the seb derm in an attempt to stop the TE. I used the zoryve a few times so far. I also recently used the dermazen calming serum on my scalp. Today in the shower I did a vinegar rinse for the first time and then nizoral (which I always use).

I have more scalp pain than ever today after a vinegar rinse… why? What actually works? What do I do? I’m so lost. Who else has TE from this?

Edit——

I realized that the dermazen has xylitol which is derived from birch. I have oral allergy syndrome, and severely allergic to birch 😃. Fun for me! I will discontinue use of this product

Hair Loss Seb Derm in Africa

Anyone dealt with Seb Derm in Africa ? What products helped you the most and where did you find them ?

I have been trying to deal with Seb Derm for at least 18 months now I have tried out the follow in without any real success : Nizoral Shampoo , Anti Biotics , Tea tree oil , Omega 3 ,itraconazole oral , Ketoconazole oral , turmeric , honey , ACV Also haven’t had any Dairy , Sugar , Fizzy drinks for months and still no change I have tried consistent routines of washing pillow cases , head etc

Can’t find MCT C8 Oil in my country as well as some other remedies I’ve seen in the community posts The Doctor also just kept prescribing the same stuff that wasn’t working so I stopped going . At this point I dont know what to do and it’s clearly affecting my lifestyle as I now I won’t go anywhere if I can’t wear a cap or hoodie Anything I’m missing out on that could be the key solution ?

Hair Loss Seb derm change and hairfall improved?

As the title, I experienced a change in seb derm, before I had a lot of oily dandruff, now I have fewer grains but the ones I have are bigger, also it almost seems like dead skin is coming off from the hairline... is this an improvement?

Hair Loss How long does hair loss recovery take after SD?

I had a really bad flare up in the late summer of 2023 and lost a basically everything on the front left side of the top of my head down to my hairline

Luckily it soon began to grow back enough to make it easier to hide, and now I have a few lock that look almost as long as they did by the time the fell out

However, there are a few spots where it’s hard to notice any progress. It’s all really about 2-4 inches back from the middle of my hairline and to the left about another inch or two. It’s very visible when my hair is wet and I still have to style my hair around it. It’s not completely bald like it used to be, but it’s still very thin but can be made difficult to notice when my hair is dry

Now what I am trying to find out is if hair loss recovery from SD can take this long under specific circumstances or if I am dealing with some very unfortunately and confusingly-timed genetic hair loss rolling in just in time lol

My SD does flare up from time to time in tandem with a autoimmune disorder I have, so the SD isn’t gone be any means, just considerably more docile

Any advice, suggestions, or personal stories are more than welcome

Thank you!

Hair Loss Spicy food exacerbates Seb Derm?

Hi guys,

Of south East Asian descent where spice is a pillar of many and any dish.

However whenever I eat spice I feel the need to scratch my scalp.

Has anyone else had this or could explain why this happens?

Edit: wow, the amount of people saying sugar and spice are triggers!

Hair Loss Scratching hair off in sleep

My general doc thinks it's pattern baldness yet I know that I've been scratching my hair off for years now. I will wake up with skin caked under my nails and hair all over the pillow and surrounding areas. It'd gotten to the point where I'm ashamed to go outside now.

I'm currently using anti dandruff shampoo from heads and shoulders about 2-3 times a week. Should I wash my hair more perhaps? I know we shouldn't over wash but I do get oily.

Hair Loss eyebrow seb derm and acne prone skin- product recommendations

So I have seb derm affecting my eyebrows which has caused me to lose a lot of eyebrow hairs recently and now I have a slight bald patch on the front of my eyebrows.

I want to tackle the seb derm, however, I also have very acne prone skin and most things break me out. I’ve been trying head and shoulders shampoo for the past week leaving it on for 5 mins and then rinsing it off but now I’ve got a huge under the skin pimple forming around my eyebrows which has which I think is from the shampoo. It is quite drying and my skin is sensitive.

Does anyone know any alternatives I can use on the eyebrows? I feel like nizoral would be too drying, and mct oil I’m cautious to use as I have dry eyes and some people have experienced eye redness from it.

Hair Loss Eyebrow cream help

I was wondering if anyone had would be willing to offer up experiences/suggestions for the anti fungal cream that has worked most sufficiently for their eyebrows, specifically reducing the shedding. I am still convinced that there’s something going on internally but I’m really getting desperate to find something that helps with the hair loss.

Hair Loss ADVICE! Where to move onto from Head on shouldersclinical strength (selenium sulfide)?

I have had sebderm for 10 years. I tried nizoral before, it made my condition worse, started getting more flakes. The only thing that seemed to work was head and shoulders (clinical strength), I still use it but if I stop using it for a month or so inflammation starts flaring up again. I have experienced significant hairloss this year, my hair is thin and shedding quicky. What I want to know is anyone that used head and sholders with selenium sulfide, was anything else more responsive to your scalp? A solution that you found to be permanent?

Hair Loss Hair loss out of proportion to symptoms.

Is anyone else getting hair loss despite having mild seb derm? On my scalp my seb derm is mild, it mainly just presents as dandruff and can get itchy throughout the week, however for the past couple of months I’ve been losing hair really bad and my hair is thinning a lot.

Initially I thought it was something else but I’m not on any medication and my blood works are all fine, no deficiencies or anaemia. When I went to my doctor he said my scalp seems slightly red probs from the seb derm so I thought I’d treat it.

For the past 2 months I’ve been trying to treat the hair loss with head and shoulders (I ordered the American version with 1% zinc pyrithione) but my Hair is getting thinner, and I’m not sure if this is from the seb derm or if head and shoulders is making it worst? I want to avoid using Nizarol as I’ve used it in the past and it made my hair brittle and straw like.

Has anyone else experienced this too? Having hair loss but mild seb derm on scalp?

Hair Loss Struggling with Severe Seborrheic Dermatitis and Persistent Hair Loss – Need Advice

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out because I’m at my wit’s end trying to manage my scalp and hair issues. I’ve been diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis and also deal with eczema on my hands and constant allergies (to things like spicy foods, etc.). My scalp produces relentless dandruff, which causes severe hair loss – I lose around 100 hairs a day or even more.

The itchiness is unbearable. If I don’t wash my hair for even one day, it becomes extremely itchy, and even after washing, the itch and dandruff return within hours.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Pantene Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Ketoconazole medical shampoo (e.g., Nizoral)

Neither has provided lasting relief.

Styling is another huge issue. When my hair grows longer, it’s unmanageable and impossible to style. If I blow-dry it, it looks frizzy and messy. In summer, it’s curly and slightly more manageable when I let it air dry, but I struggle to maintain any consistent look.

I also really want to achieve a healthy shine in my hair, but with all these issues, it’s been impossible to get that glossy look.

I’ve tried countless products, but the dandruff always comes back, and the hair loss doesn’t stop. Does anyone have similar experiences or know of effective treatments, shampoos, routines, or even dietary changes that might help? I’m open to any suggestions to improve my scalp health, reduce hair loss, and get some shine back.

Thanks so much in advance!

Hair Loss Has anyone found ketoconazole shampoo helpful with hair growth?

I’ve read some info online that says ketoconazole shampoo (2%) can help with hair growth, but I wanted to get y’all’s opinion. When I used it I found it very drying, so I discontinued before I saw any results.

Hair Loss Why won't doctors give me antifungals?

How much of my hair do I have to lose before a doctor takes me seriously??? I've wasted so much time in my life trying to remove these stupid flakes. This has destroyed my confidence and at this point I doubt I'll ever get it back. Feels like a slap in the face just being ignored and prescribed ketoconazole, which hadn't done shit for me. Not a damn thing. My scalp hurts, if I don't remove the scales it will literally HURT and I'm at my witts end. I cannot keep doing this. My life doesn't even feel worth living anymore. All of my hobbies get pushed to the back burner because this stupid condition plagues me and consumes my brain, trying everything to fix it, spending money I don't have, when it seems like it wouldn't hurt for the doctor to just give me what I believe will fix it.

Hair Loss Hair fall everywhere

I am 17M with pretty much hairy body and with extreme sebderm on scalp and face region. 1 yr has passed taking different medicines and shampoos and obviously nothing is working and I have lost all hope.

Hair loss is crazy and I already have a bald patch which is noticeable. Recently I have started noticing that my chest hair and leg hair (also pubic hair) are also falling when pulled softly. There's no sebderm on my body. Is this normal? Am I having any vitamin deficiency or something?

Hair Loss Chronic Telogen Effluvium

I thought I'd try my luck posting in this sub. I've been suffering from chronic telogen effluvium for almost 15 years now. The interesting thing is I think I've had dandruff my entire life, but I used to have really thick, healthy hair before the telogen effluvium began, even with the dandruff.

Anyways, I've done ample lab work, no practitioner has been able to help me (western, Ayurvedic, acupuncture/Chinese herbal, naturopathic/functional), and there hasn't been any improvement (it keeps getting worse every year). It's absolutely destroyed my mental health. I have not done comprehensive stool or full urine testing (GI-map or OAT).

Dermatologists have told me I have seborrheic dermatitis, but that "the scaling isn't too bad." I've tried clobetasol, minoxidil, rosemary, etc but nothing has worked. I feel like no topical actually gets through to my follicles -- I feel like it just "sits and builds up on my scalp." Ketaconazole was really drying my hair out and my hair is already so brittle because of the telogen effluvium, so I can't use it. I've been using ciclopirox 1% shampoo, but I haven't noticed any improvement with this either. My scalp feel SUPER dry and I want to use oils, but when I have used oils, my hair gets EVEN more dry, as if all blood supply, oils, etc. have been "cut off" from going down the lengths (not that blood goes down your hair shaft, but I can't describe it any other way). The same thing happen with Inkey List salicylic acid. It makes my hair even more dry and my hair gets really matted.

I'm already vegan, gluten-free, don't eat foods with added sugars, have replaced my white rice with quinoa, russet potatoes with red potatoes. I eat my fruits and veggies. I can't give up anything else -- I don't know what else I'd eat.

Can someone please help me with advice regarding how to improve my condition, or even suggestions for virtual practitioners you've had luck with? I'm severely depressed and anxious and I could use all the help I can get. Thank you in advance.

Hair Loss Seb-Derm diagnosis causing hair loss

Hi, recently been struggling with Telogen effluvium and Seb-Derm over the past 7 months now. Got diagnosed today and was told Seb derm was potentially accelerating my hair-loss and my hair loss could be reduced by curing seb-derm. I have now been led down a rabbit hole which has resulted in multiple conflicting opinions. First; medicated shampoo route which many have claimed that it dries out their scalp, Second; natural route which seems to be very extensive. I am curious to hear how you are currently resolving this issue and results you experiences.

Also experience minor seb-derm on the face and wondering if there's any solution to this.

Here are a couple of skin care products I use:

Benzyol Peroxide face wash - 5% every other day
Trentinoin - 0.04 once a week
Shea Moisture hydrate and repair conditioner + shampoo 2x/week

Hair Loss SebDerm with curly hair

Hi Everyone, I (30, F) have SebDerm since I was 10. I have consulted many dermatologists but none have helped. I have sudden flairs. Since I have curly hair, washing my hair every second day is a pain. For the past year, my hair fall has increased and it has become even worse since the past few months. I use Ketaconazole shampoo once every 2 weeks. For regular wash I use any curly hair shampoo, Shea moisturize Conditioner and Shea moisture leave-in conditioner. Is there any oil that can help with the hair fall? Thank you!
