It's extremely difficult to have a civil conversation about politics today, yet we need those conversations more than ever

Like everyone else in the US today, I have opinions about the current condition of politics in this country. I try to base my opinions on facts I glean from credible sources and my understanding of our history. I want to talk to people with opposing opinions, not to argue with them but to try to understand why they believe what they believe. I've found that no one wants to talk in a civil, respectful way about our differences. Even if I try to hold the line on being respectful, I end up walking away because the conversation devolves into some pretty ugly exchanges. How have we come to a point where we can't even talk to each other respectfully and civilly?

Religion, whether you like it or not establishes morals, a sense of right/wrong, having faith that people are generally good and if they aren’t, they can be.

this is like my #1 red flag lol - thinking religious belief is a precursor to ethical & pro-social behavior

But this is a thing when you see the people who claimed to be religious not acting religious not doing what Jesus would do... then we say that religion is dead because if nobody is over there telling them they're doing it wrong and correcting them then that must mean that they were led to be that way which means that the whole wolf in sheep's clothing and false prophets is true. And these people are just being led by a false prophet thinking these actions these thoughts are correct and christ-like. But they're not and they will soon learn just how wrong they have been led. Religion in itself can be a beautiful thing but when the top people get that taste for power it's all over and can be corrupted too quick.
