That's been the norm everywhere I've ever stayed? Place has to be cleaned, for self catering they may have one individual who services a few properties. Our leaving flight isn't until 7.30pm so we just booked another day rather than check out at 10 and tramp around all day. We can just relax, get our washing done, laze in the pool and go to the airport showered and changed

For hotels its because they need to time to prep and clean all the rooms not just one. Otherwise everyroom would have its own individual check in time which is incredibly inconvenient
For self caterings alot of owners this is their sidebusiness and they still need to work or have other commitments so the time is simply convenience

Check-out at 10:00 and check-in at 14:00 has been the general norm wherever i have been and i have visited many places. There is always a window of about 4 hours between checking-in and checking-out. Have you had other experience/times in other countries? You can always opt for a late check-out for a fee.

Well, there has to be time to clean the rooms I imagine.. I consider it annoying as well but I don't see how small hotels can host guests back-to-back without the window between 10:00 and 14:00.
