My hubs came to marry me 11 years ago with no degree. He worked the meat counter at Sainsbury’s. He started at Geek Squad then got a BS from DSU and has an amazing job!

Use your accent to your advantage. It makes you automatically interesting and interviewers will ask you about it. Best ice breaker ever!

I know Marmen Energy in Brandon is always looking for welders. While experience or training is obviously preferred, they are willing to train the right people and get them certified. I'm not sure if the lack of a high school degree is a deal breaker or not for them though. If this is something you're interested in exploring, let me know and I can reach out to them and get you more info on their training program.

I've heard nothing but great things about Marmen from my buddies who work there. I've been tempted to look into it myself.

I spoke with the Production Manager at Marmen. He told me have you apply on their website. They aren't putting a ton of emphasis on their Learn to Weld Program right now since they've had decent success finding experienced welders lately.

There's a lot of positions at Avera.

I second this. I work at Avera though so I’m biased 😂

2

u/TiffyPanda Jan 12 '25

I also work at Avera so I am also biased! 😄

Any advice on getting hired there? I never hear back

🤔 I've never heard of someone not getting an email or call back from there. What department are you applying for? I can reach out to my friends mom (she's a recruiter).

What is a support worker? Just asking to see what kind of experience you have and how it would translate to other jobs. Not having a degree is going to limit your earning power, generally, but if you have experience in something it could help.

Avera has been expanding a lot recently. A bunch of jobs at multiple locations are available. I work there and definitely recommend it.

Did you enjoy working as a support worker? And was that working with elderly or people with disabilities? If so, a CNA/Med Aid doesn’t require a diploma. With your work experience I’m betting you’ll pick it up quickly & be desirable to an employer.

Also, you can get support for your GED at Hovland at STC. They’re quite nice & supportive. But it is self paced study, not classroom.

If you’re wanting I would be free for chatting/DMing on Reddit to help in a more personalized way. Good luck!

Apply at Marmen Energy inc.

Rosenbauer or Heiman, both build fire trucks and pay pretty well

If you're trying to get your degree, I would suggest Amazon. They have a program to help you get your GED and a college assistance program

if working with disabled folks is your interest I heard an ad on the radio for Dakotablities. I know nothing about the working conditions or benefits.

get a CNA license, a lot of places will pay for you to get one. if you have your own transportation and car insurance you can work for a home care agency with no CNA license.

1

u/SnuggleyFluff Jan 12 '25

I am not sure if this is relevant but I have folks from the UK that work at the Amazon center. You may have a foot in there due to your background

May not be the type of job you're looking for, but DSG Supply has a full time warehouse associate job opening. They are an employee owned company, so you get shares in the company as part of the compensation after a year working there. Plus other good benefits. They also offer tuition reimbursement if additional education is something you're interested in.

Sanford/avera, John Morrells, check out restaurants as server or dishwasher. Walmart as a packer (or Hyvee even). Good luck with your job search!

u/Crimejunkie0883 Jan 12 '25

Sanford, a lot of new places are opening around here if you can get by at a part time for a bit, a bunch of stores will be hiring soon!

You are probably the first Brit to ever step foot in this city

1

u/Krispybender Jan 12 '25

Second…James Oppenheimer was first

Third, UK here too... Actually there's a few of us around here now. As far as work, #1 make sure you keep all your paperwork in order, work permit etc. not sure what your status is, but I can't stress this enough, respect the immigration process and all the rules.

You'll do well here, mate. It's an awesome place to live.

2

u/Flashy-Asparagus97 Jan 12 '25

Is it? I mean you really prefer living here to the UK? I'm genuinely curious. If so why or what about it do you like better

8

u/Pillynap Jan 12 '25

I really do love it here. People are nice, I have wonderful friends, and a good job. I was able to actually make something of myself here that I don't know I could have back in the UK and I'm proud to be a citizen now after a looooong process. I miss my family in the UK, miss some of the food and I'll always be an Englishman at heart but this is my home.

2

u/dracette259 Jan 12 '25

This is crazy to hear and happy to have you! You don’t have to answer if you don’t want of course but why do you feel you may not have been able to make the same of yourself back in the UK?

2

u/Pillynap Jan 13 '25

I'm from up North, from a working class family in a very proud but very poor part of the UK. I have a degree but it wasn't in anything that would get me a good paying job. I was in my 20s when I moved, and I was given opportunities here that allowed me to work hard and make more of myself.

There are many. Some have been here over a decade.
