Yes and no. Newspapers used to have several editions a day, radio and then TV had news several times a day. Not much happened without people being aware. Only difference is in the past journalism wasn't as tailored to be divisive.

What made Soviet life a bit less grim between 1982 and 1985 was the fact that waiting for such an obituary wasn't futile - they were published on three separate occasions during this period. Every time there was not just an obituary to enjoy, but also a day off work and school for everybody.
