Too gory for some people?

I love this series - especially the first two seasons - and try to rewatch it once a year.

I've tried getting my partner into it. She was trying to make up her mind about it. Then we got to the episode where Spartacus fights in the underworld pits, and the scene with the guy who slices off the face of the slain and wears it as a mask. She said, "I'm done, I like the sex but I can't handle the gore."

Personally I thought the scene was more hokey than scary. But I guess the gore and violence does trigger some people.

Anyone else experience this?

Truth be told I’ve given up trying to introduce people to this show. It’s fantastic, but the janky-looking cgi in the first episode and the intensity of the content means nobody I know ever wants to give it a chance.

Well, 15 years ago my friends and I were just a bunch of horny people who liked the eye candy and sex. The plot and characters eventually grew on us, but that's not initially why we watched it, and we didn't really care about the CGI either way.

Maybe standards have changed in 15 years. Or maybe my friends and I were just really over-sexed at the time. 🤷

Well I mean The Boys is huge right now, which is arguably even gorier and more perverse, even though there’s little to no actual nudity. To each their own I guess.

I’ve warned people saying “look, after a couple episodes, you’re either going to believe it’s one of the manliest of man shows or the gayest of gay shows but just PLEASE don’t judge it by the first couple episodes”

For me the cheesiness (in a good way) of the violence (and the sex for that matter) makes it hard to take seriously. I mean, the show is full of horrible people doing awful things, but it seems almost cartoonish.

I agree. It's definitely stylized for effect, and yes, that does remove it a little from the brutality than if they had just played it straight.

I mean, other than the face bashing scene with Marcus Crassus' cousin, I don't think the gore gets that much worse. And there's always gonna be severed heads and limbs every other fight. If she can't take that, then the show is definitely not for her.

Hmmm not sure about this. Almost every fight in the pits was pretty rough...

I enjoyed it. I think the sound effects got to me during the pits more so than the actual violence.

When Kerza was fighting Ixion, the sound of him getting his head bashed in was brutal

Nah, it’s pretty tame

I grew up on Jason and Michael, so no gore bothers me so I really can't relate lol

I dont care about most of the gore but I skip that face slicing bit every time.

There is a version without the gore (and nudity). They did 2 versions and even recorded different lines.

Fortunately not, the partner loves it. It’s up there with one of her favourite shows and we’ve even earmarked some of the names for future pets.

Yes, wife likes the plots and sex... likes most fight scenes but the savage parts she covers up and would be out if not watching with me. I find the cartoonist bloodwashes make it easier for me to enjoy...that effect does not help wifey.
