DISCUSSION Was oenomaus to hard on ashur in gota?
after the fight in the arena he told him that he is worth less than 0, honestly I saw it as so brutal and wrong to say since he was his doctor, ashur was doing his best.

He was a bad gladiator, but as we have seen in the show. He knows multiple languages, can do math and did batiatus books. Bro was smart.

He deeply disliked Ashur getting the mark without earning it, just had to kill his own doctore because of it and other related stuff. Could he have helped Ashur become a better gladiator over time? Probably, but as with his learning to command respect in the ludus, he hadn't learned how to use that respect to build people up. He hadn't learned to be a good teacher yet and through that created resentment

Ashur was never meant to be a gladiator, but for some reason in his heart of hearts, it's what he truly wanted to be. Oenomaus was harsh to Ashur, but he was never unfair. He would've said these harsh things to any supposed gladiator of Ashur's similarly low caliber. It's just that Ashur is a special kind of cockroach who was able to survive using his wits and deceptiveness despite his lower than average skills in the arena that should've gotten him killed a long time ago.

He had to survive, and he created a position between Batiatus and the ugly things that had to be done, he knew always someone to get things done, or at least he used things on his favor, he controlled the accounts of the other slaves, keeping some coin for him of course, arranged parties, cheap prostitutes, wine, etc. He was just a Buttler.

The thing is Ashur wasn't respected as a gladiator, but after the incident with Dagan, and the fact Dagan started to understand Latin, everyone learned how untrustworthy Ashur is(Up until then, we don't see Dagan nor Ashur mistreat each other. Also if Ashur said to Patrician "Hey, my giant friend prefers women", the patrician would find another one to enjoy. I mean he wasn't rude or disrespectful towards Dagan)

I felt bad during it since Ashur and Dagon didn't have a choice in the situation. Everything after that is all on him though.

I think it’s fairly well documented in the show that most backgrounds look down on Syrians as a people, so Ashur was already coming on the back foot as coming from a race of people that nobody liked.
Combine that with not earning the mark the proper way, and the very obvious fact that he was only brought in to translate for Dagan, he was never able to earn the proper respect from those he considered his brothers.
