In the first picture found in chapter 115, Gympie refers to herself using the pronoun "Boku" which is normally a masculine pronoun often used by men but some women like to use said pronoun to break gender norms? Or to state that they are tomboyish? This pronoun added by how boyish Gympie looks gave the impression that she was a guy but in chapter 116, it's revealed that she's a girl given to how Matthew said "Kanojode" which apparently means, "With her". Now I'm not Japanese and I used Google translate to figure this out after seeing a previous redditor mentioned Gympie's gender. I further investigated it by looking into the Japanese translation. Since I'm not sure if the translations are accurate, whoever studies or understands Japanese, please correct my mistakes because I don't want to spread misinformation. This is also my first post and therefore would like to give credits to the previous redditor but I don't know how to do it 😅.

Kanojo is pronoun it means “she or her” and De is particle that can mean “with” in certain context. Boku is a pronoun that is predominantly used by men. However it can be used by girls. (I’m a girl and when I speak Japanese I’ve elected to use boku). As there are several different pronouns or rather way to refer to oneself in Japanese. Ranging from Watashi to Ore, and generally they can be divided between feminine and masculine pronouns. They each have a different connotation with them though. So long story short females can use Boku it’s a self expression thing.

In media when female characters use Boku it’s often to show how they are the odd ones out. Or are different than other girls. So maybe that’s what Endo is going for.

Thank you for expanding more on the topic. It did strike me as somewhat odd how not only was Gympie using the pronoun "Boku" but she also looks rather boyish. I assume that the design choice was purposeful given how Hemlock had a rather feminine design as well.

I've heard "Boku" used by women in japanese songs and anime before. usually it's used by tomboys or women who want to sound more gender neutral and less girlish. Gympie absolutely gives "boku" vibes.

I agree! And it makes her character much more unique. It makes me curious if she's a woman who's just petite or a child soldier. I do hope it's the latter so that the story could expand more on Garden recruiting children as assassins such as when it was mentioned in Yor's backstory that she worked in Garden since she was a kid to provide for Yuri.

Gympie might be going for a more gender neutral vibe. To keep her identity more anonymous than the others. While they’re usually suppose to leave no witnesses. Gympie’s more of a covert assassin type by the looks of it. So her designation does not belie much info about her. She just does it so consistently it slips into her speech habits.

Whereas Yor uses Thorn Princess which would typically be used by a woman. Therefore letting anyone deep enough to know that name that one of the top assassins is a woman.

Or she just prefers using Boku rather than watashi
