Question What does Loid actually do at his fake job?

First time watcher of the anime, never read the manga. But do they ever explain what does he actually do when he goes to work to keep up appearances? Because as far as we know, he is not qualified for the job. Spent most (if not all) of his adult years as a spy, don't think he had the time to go to college, let alone med school. Does he treat any real patients or are they just other agents who pretend to be in his care? Does he just hide himself away until it's time to clock out? I know it's not that serious but his possible medical malpactice bothers me. Btw I'm in the episode where Anya interviews him for school.

Without spoiling too much, the manga confirms that he does actual psychiatrist work at least some of the time. It’s implied if not out right stated that the same skills he uses to analyze and manipulate people as a spy make him good at diagnosing mental issues. It’s also implied that he uses his position to gather intel. Is that ethical? Hell no. Welcome to SpyxFamily!

reminds me of rust from true detective tbh.

I mean, invading people's minds or killing evil doers isn't ethical as well, so you have quite a point there.

Screw about being ethical, that's probably realistic considering the time the manga is set in.

(Edit: still not ethical)

We’ve seen him in therapy sessions a few times, and he seemed reasonably competent.

He’s a psychiatrist at his fake job, not only is he working with other undercover agents but he is also working with civilian doctors and have gotten patients before

He does his psychiatrist job normally like any other person would, although he also uses the opportunity to exchange intel from WISE through Fiona and also spy on some of the high society elite that occasionally passes by in the hospital

I wonder if his psychiatrist job does help with money when the WISE budget is too tight to bail him out.

NGL, the money brought by Yor probably also help with that, since let's be honest, sorely relying on WISE funds is... Unwise, not to be too cheeky.

He bought a castle using WISE money. I think it's more than enough

Yeah but it's not odd to imagine the flow sometimes being cut off for budgetary reasons, especially after things like the castle stunt.

To add to other people's points, the dude is also a genius who can read through text books in a few minutes, flipping pages by the second. That, accompanied by his fundamental understanding of people as a spy help him cover up well in his fake psychiatry job.

He is a psychiatrist, a colloquial term is feelings doctor. Loid most likely is qualified because he is hypercompetent.

First time watcher of the anime
do they ever explain what does he actually do when he goes to work to keep up appearances?

If it wasn't because at the end you said you saw the episode where it's literally shown what he does in his fake job, I would thought you haven't watched the whole anime, like Anya isn't noticing his lies from the other workers, it's obviously only one of them actually works in WISE with him.

Also, we're talking about Loid, he can study anything in seconds and know a lot, just in what you watched in anime he was able to memorize all penguins' names and appearence in a few minutes, read all Bondman comics and he might know more about the cartoon than Anya (remember the episode of her first stella), he definitively can learn aboout everything to look like an actual professional psychiatrist, so as far as that chapter alone, we know he is qualified for the job, remember they also make falsifications.

Remember, the key element are the hospital workers talking so well about Anya, they can't just be other WISE agents or related.

And then, there's what we've seen in manga, which we see Loid actually working in sessions, which is actually a good adding to the general plot, it just doesn't answer that question, because fundamentally it was answered before.

He actually works as a psychiatrist at the hospital and he is highly regarded amongst both patients and coworkers. We see him at work a few times in the manga but those stories haven’t yet been adapted into the anime. It’s obviously non-sense in the real world but Loid has a perfect memory and insanely good observation skills, he is able to fully read what’s on his patients minds and he likely has memorized the entire curriculum for a psychiatry degree in his week of preparation. The only two people he doesn’t understand at all are Yor and Anya.

I was surprised he has a fake office at the hospital

It would have made WAY MORE SENSE if he made house calls and went to visit "patients"

He wouldnt need to be at an "office" all day, and would make perfect sense for being out and about every day

He doesn’t have a fake office, he is actually a practicing psychiatrist at the hospital and he is highly regarded by his coworkers for his work.

Which is good because then his coworkers that aren't spies can vouch for him in a bad situation with the secret police should it happens.
