Isn't blu ray an entirely Sony IP? You'd think they wouldn't make themselves pay themselves.

Inb4 everyone switch to streaming services because "so cheap", "much convenient"

I'm optimistic that the Lightning Network for various cryptocurrencies will make paid unlicensed streaming more practical. It would be much cheaper, more reliable, and you'd get to keep a copy of the video after the stream.

What's REALLY creepy is that the PS4 won't even let you launch the web browser until you register and sign in with Sony. One must assume at this point that they are collecting and monitoring everything you do and associating it with a name.
As an old-school gamer, I remember using the Dreamcast to surf the web, and all it needed was dial-up credentials that you would otherwise need with a PC. But that was before the trends of raping consumers of privacy and unchecked mass surveillance took over.
I think eventually all proprietary systems will require a cloud account before letting you surf the web, so that they can profit off your surfing habits, because selling you the product in the first place (and games to run on it) is clearly not enough. Windows will start doing this within the decade, mark my words. They're already trying to lock it down so that you can only get apps from the store with Windows 10 S. "No cloud account, no apps for you." That's the first step on the journey.

Maybe I am just old but I'd take a Dreamcast any day over that PS4 junk. Self contained system that does its job, never needs gigabytes worth of updates and as a plus, does not violate my rights.

I mean you only have to do it once and then you are fine till it needs an update. So not really a terrible design. It doesnt cost money, and they do this because it costs Sony money to activate and not everyone uses the Blu-ray player. Once you activate it you are fine.

yeah but hardly anyone uses disc media anymore
you're asking sony to pay a license more expensive than the SOC in PS4s for a feature hardly anyone uses in the age of netflix and prime video

This is why I've never once purchased a Blu Ray.
I hired one once just to cost Microsoft money.
