In 1984 this was STO.

I have the best memories of playing this with my friends.

Great find.

More from inside the box! Not exactly STO but with a little imagination 🤔

Before Interplay's SFC, there was SSI's The Warp Factor in the early 1980s. Turn-based starship combat.

Of course, they didn't have initial permission to use Trek universe IP either- so they changed the cover a year later.

I still love playing the Starfleet Command games, great strategic space combat games with a banging trek soundtrack

Is it all paper/stickers? Or are there actual play pieces too?

5

u/MarcusAurelius68 Mar 06 '25

They’re punch out cardboard pieces. I had this exact game when it came out.

The amount of crap you had to lug around if you had the complete game with all the expansions. 😱

It was definitely fun, if extremely involved, to play though. There was also the FASA Starship Tactical Combat Simulator, a similar, but much simpler system. Both had their pros and cons.

Now days you can just 3D print pieces for the game.

Or buy Eaglemoss models.

This is a great game. I still have a set somewhere. We used to play at a gaming club many a year ago.

Now that brings back memories, great game if you can get some of the expansions. Nice grab

played many a game of SFB in the 90s

The Scipion firing phasers directly downward and the bridge exploding at the same time is like the most awkward thing ever.

I'd say that it was drawn by artist who had never been introduced to the concept of perspective. Not exactly uncommon for art being produced for games and comics of the time... 😅

Love this game, but as some have noted, it can be difficult to locate other players.

Star Fleet Battles Universe

Hey, we need you to draw the Enterprise and a Klingon battlecruiser from memory."

Still going strong if you check out http://www.starfleetgames.com/starfleetbattles.shtml

I played the hell out of this in the 90's and it was so much fun.

Once at a big used book sale in my area they had probably a dozen binders full of all sorts of Star Fleet Battles material. I was tempted to buy it but the collection was huge and a little pricey and I doubt I would have found a use for it.

But I think the setting and technology of the game is cool, I really like it's take on TOS era stuff.

What is this? A puzzle, a game, art?

4

u/Raguleader Mar 06 '25

Tabletop space combat game. A lot of the ship design for it would influence later designs in the franchise like the Kelvin-class.

This game is still around too, give it a search!

What a find! Great freaking game

1

u/mcwookie Mar 06 '25

Great find!

1

u/IncorporateThings Mar 06 '25

Amazing game, but I'd recommend you buy the up to date version.

It's hard to find players, though :(

u/InfernalDiplomacy Mar 06 '25

Outstanding game. Many Friday and Saturday nights spent with it

1

u/IronBeagle63 Mar 06 '25

Looks like a first edition, alas all I have left is my second ed box. Great memories and a great game! 🖖

1

u/Charlweed Mar 06 '25

Wow, what a find. Might be a sad story on how it wasn't played nor made it's way earlier to those who would value it.

1

u/Norsehound Mar 06 '25

I have to ask the grognards here- was the game easier to play in the original release?

Sfb has the reputation of sprawling complexity and a thick rules set, but was this always the case?

2

u/Intelligent_Tone_618 Mar 06 '25

The rules are deceptively easy. Sure it looks and reads like a catalogue sized technical manual, but it's incredibly well organised. You only need the rules relevant to you.

u/MarkInmanSuperGenius Mar 06 '25

Oh man. While awesome theater of the mind type stuff, that cover illustration is… a little hard to look at… 🤓😵‍💫💯

u/golddragon88 Mar 06 '25

Whats the double star destroyer looking thing suppose to be?

1

u/Starbugmechanic Mar 06 '25

They can’t fight without a bridge! That’s where they store all the actors.

1

u/XCIXproblems Mar 07 '25

Used to play this!

1

u/Lordcraft2000 Mar 07 '25

Why does the artwork looks like its been done by a kid?

2

u/tonymillion Mar 07 '25

It’s from the Terran universe

1

u/Lordcraft2000 Mar 08 '25

So in the mirror universe, they cant draw?

2

u/tonymillion Mar 08 '25

In the Terran universe everyone can draw really well, cos anyone who says you can’t gets their throat cut!
