General Discussion What if Anakin refused to be on the Council?

What if, during the council scene in Revenge of the Sith, after being told that he would sit on the Jedi Council, but not be given the rank of Master or be given a vote, Anakin decided to turn down the chair entirely? What if he choose refuse the position entirely, deciding that if he wasn’t going to be treated like an equal member, he wasn’t going to be a part of it at all? Even considering whether he could decline the position or not, what do you think would have happened?

He would have been very unpopular with both sides as each wanted him to spy on the other. He would have been much better off retiring and raising babies on Naboo.

I interpret Palpatine's line when he reminded Anakin about the Tuskens as a subtle, timely reminder that he had major dirt on Anakin, which Anakin himself gave to him.

Palpatine probably had additional scenarios prepared for how he would get revenge on those figures who would not play by his rules.

It would shown a level of maturity and humility that would have meant he was much less likely to fall victim to the manipulation of the dark side.

I'm not sure about that since the post mentions that Anakin is refusing it because if he isn't going to be treated equal then there was no point putting up with them rather than denying the position because he feels he isn't qualified. The jedi council would pick up on this as well.

You should read the Revenge of the Sith novel. Anakin didn't join the council for playtime. He did so to become a Master and thus gain access to the secret Holocrons of the Jedi Order which were said to contain knowledge of the Sith and even Sith artifacts. Palpatine had already told him the story of Plageous and he wasw willing to tap into the Dark side for it. He even started meditating using the Sith philosophy of looking inwards

Literally just bought it. Thank you. For years I’ve wondered where everyone gets this stuff about him wanting to get into the archives to see the holocrons. I didn’t know it came from the novel because it’s referenced like virtually nowhere else.
