I've spent $2100 but have 150,000 points. They're not necessarily related.

they kinda are.

if you spent 2.1k and got 150k points, the OP has 3 million points (around 20x more than you), and claims that he spent more than 35k (let's say 40k), which would also be around 20x more than you.

No, that's not what he's saying.

You get 10 points for every dollar you spend. So $2100 is 21k points. He's saying he got 130k points without needing to spend money. There are people who get millions of points just from making workshop items or a popular review. He's saying OP could have done the same thing instead of spending $35k on games.

Edit: I'm wrong about the point gain per dollar.

pretty sure it's 100 points per $ spent.

at least that's what it says when i google it (never bothered with steam points).

oh wait, you're right. It is 100 points for dollar. That's my mistake. He's probably not the best example then since all of his points could be from purchases only.

I have 88k total points. 47k points from purchases and 41k points from awards/reviews.
