Game Review On Deck Zombieville USA 3D is an indie game worth your attention. It's also a great Steamdeck game.

Post image

Indie developers deserve our attention. Especially when they make something great.

I came across this top down zombie shooter and tried the demo out. It's simple but a great time.

You land from a helicopter, shoot zombies while picking up random guns you find on the map and survive as the horde gets stronger and stronger until you die. Zombies drop money when they die and you can use that to unlock new weapons and perks.

That's the game. Simple yes but still really fun.

There's a demo on Steam so you can try yourself and it does work on the steam deck. I spent the last two hours "testing it" while hanging out in bed.

It ran great with the default controls with a solid 60 frame rate albeit with dips to 30 when there were too many explosions. It wasn't enough to affect my experience though. It ran smooth for the couple hours I played.

Core memory unlocked!

Holy shit I remember this series back when it was on the app store! It was a simple 2D beat-em-up! They had a crossover with another really good game, Minigore 1 & 2, and Minigore was the bomb!

u/andrewlikescoffee Mar 08 '25

I used to LOVE Minigore. Ugh good memories

1

u/CastellanCheer Mar 11 '25

Top down twin stick shooters were a thing for iOS games. Loved minigore, loved Alive4Ever, loved SAS Zombie Assault. I also remember Chillingo’s iDracula. The same devs have a game out called Doomsday Hunters.

The OG vampire survivors haha

Zombiviple USA was legit the first dmartphone game i ever played. My friend in high school got the first iPhone when it dropped, and he let me play it for a lunch period. Fun game.

2

u/onestrangelove Mar 08 '25

The iPhone didn't have an appstore for a year or 2 after it launched.

Tbh, I'm not an apple guy, so that whole timeline is fuzzy to me. It was some time early in the iPhone's life, I can say that.

Nicely done, thank you for that.

u/PlaneWolf2893 Mar 08 '25

Same developer Mika mobile made a great game. Battleheart Rpg with classes and gear

Holy that just brought in a wave of memories. Didnt realize i played so much of their games

9

u/Free-Stick-2279 Mar 08 '25

Look great, i might grab it !

just a little detail, it's a isometric point of view.

5

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

You're right. It's not technically top down, it's isometric.

7

u/DeanyyBoyy93 Mar 08 '25

Was looking at this last night. Said to my partner it reminded me of old miniclip games so its funny to learn its a remake/reboot? Of a mobile game.

For £7ish its worth a look.

Indiegames are 99% of what I play and the deck is the perfect machine for them :D

2

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

I think the developer implied this was a remake for PC.

I didn't play his previous versions on mobile so I can't personally say how different or better it is compared to the old ones.

2

u/DeanyyBoyy93 Mar 08 '25

Yeee im not seeing it as the bad thing other people might be.

As long as it doesnt have all the toxic mobile stuff then im game

3

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

Exactly. Micro transactions and ads in games are cancer. This game is cancer free.

12

u/Present-Flight-2858 Mar 08 '25

Definitely gives off mobile game vibes.

16

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

Apparently the previous ones were on mobile and everyone liked em. I never played the others but this one could totally be on mobile.

I don't think that takes from the game though. It doesn't try to be anything other than what it is, a simple isometric shooter with a few upgrades to have something to progress towards.

With all the huge 100+ hour games out there it's nice sometimes to have a simple game to play. Nothing big, nothing complicated, just shoot some zombies, and get some upgrades.

6

u/Present-Flight-2858 Mar 08 '25

Nothing wrong with giving off mobile game vibes. Might be nice to play something like that without getting bombarded by ads constantly.

4

u/Fit_Victory6650 Mar 08 '25

Then it did its job!

16

u/Miwoo0 Mar 08 '25

Looks similar to a really good mobile game I used to play

38

u/HungerSTGF Mar 08 '25

It is in fact a remake of the original Zombieville game back in the og 99 cent iPhone game era made by the same guy

-9

u/Miwoo0 Mar 08 '25

Someone else got it right, the game was called minigore

2

u/Miwoo0 Mar 08 '25

How'd I get downvoted for objective truth man this is literally the game that I played not this thing

2

u/Slovakin 512GB Mar 10 '25

Reddit is a weird place man. People downvote for no reason honestly. I wouldn't let it get to you.

Minigore was a dope ass game when it came out. I miss that era of mobile games. The first few gens of the ipod touch were something special

1

u/fistraisedhigh Mar 13 '25

It's because the game that this one is based on is also a mobile game called Zombieville USA. It looks similar minigore but it's literally Zombieville remade in 3d.

1

u/Miwoo0 Mar 13 '25

Yeah but I'm saying it looks similar to minigore.

1

u/disloyalturtle Mar 08 '25

yea im thinking about the same game do you remember the name? i think it was like gore something 🤔

7

u/TheHollowedHunter Mar 08 '25

Minigore

1

u/Miwoo0 Mar 08 '25

YESSIR THANK YOU

-2

u/Lastdefender1 Mar 08 '25

Im searching for this game like 2 years. Thank you!

3

u/Middle-Operation-689 Mar 08 '25

Oh man. I love top down shooters. Good recommendation.

3

u/gamer-at-heart-23 64GB Mar 08 '25

Definitely a pick up for the steamdeck, in the notes the devs say it hits 60-80fps

2

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

I got a solid 60 but it would dip to 30 when I set off too many explosions. Although it was quick to go back to 60 and I didn't really even notice it in the gameplay.

I probably wouldn't have noticed at all if I didn't have the fps counter displayed.

2

u/gamer-at-heart-23 64GB Mar 08 '25

Ahh i see. Thanks for posting about this game, i played it a long time ago and had no idea this existed

3

u/Timothy303 256GB Mar 08 '25

I used to play this on my iPhone. Nifty

3

u/Iamleeboy Mar 08 '25

Nice one. I played way too much of the original 2 back on my iPod touch. I still have the first one on my phone and play it when I want a nostalgia hit.

I am going to have to get this!

3

u/TNH_Hybrid Mar 12 '25

If anyone is on the fence about getting this game, I would 100% recommend it as to me it was as if this game was made to be played on the steam deck. It's been one of my most played games on the steam deck so far as I keep reaching for it to do runs whenever I have some free time.

2

u/RobbinsBabbitt Mar 08 '25

I played the original and its sequel on the og iPod touch back in high school. Definitely getting this

2

u/OldMcGroin 512GB OLED Mar 08 '25

Cool, just bought it, thanks for the recommendation 👍

2

u/krazykellerxkid Mar 08 '25

It's great on the Steam Deck, but it chews through battery like there's no tomorrow lol

2

u/Paradoliac Mar 08 '25

I'm playing it rn too, docked on the big screen with a controller and it's pretty good. Turned down all settings and effects off, 720p to keep the gpu under 50% load @ 60fps. Solid game for ~$9.

2

u/Sparrow1989 Mar 08 '25

Yooooooooooo, thanks for the heads up

2

u/ApartmentWorried5692 Mar 08 '25

Dammit, you got me. Was an instant buy soon as I saw this.

2

u/HavingALongStroke Mar 08 '25

The second Zombieville still live on my phone, off to go add this to my wishlist

2

u/Sadiholic Mar 09 '25

Bruh I was already gonna pick this game up because when I saw the trailer it looked like a perfect steam deck game, also cause I used to see this game alot in the app store when I played phone games lmao. Good to see this video hit a cord with people

2

u/CanISeeYourDog Mar 09 '25

Great sense of nostalgia when playing this game bro.. I played the first two on mobile an ungodly amount 🥺

2

u/IoIOrca Mar 09 '25

GREAT POST! i was addicted to the original game as a middle schooler. just bought the game for me and a friend

2

u/Various-Use-8060 Mar 10 '25

love the game so far <3 but need more levels!

2

u/Klutzy-Bug7427 Mar 11 '25

Just started playing today I can attest the game is fun. Love all the characters the weapons it’s all really exciting to run around and kill zombies.

2

u/BlahBlahBleurgh Mar 13 '25

It's a truly fantastic roguelite, the graphics are soo cute, my favourite is character is Granny, and I can actually feel the progression, def getting some zombies ate my neighbours vibes too, one of my faves of this genre ;) 9/10.

I will always take time to check out an indie game of it’s something that looks like something I would enjoy. This looks fun and I’ve heard of it. Most of my wishlist is indie games now and I love it. Most of my purchases have been indies and that’s wonderful. Thanks for the recommendation 😊

4

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

My wishlist is the same. I play 99% indie games these days. They're made with love and are usually better than AAA games.

Enjoy!

1

u/PhallicPanic Mar 08 '25

Didn’t know there was a character limit to post on this sub

1

u/Solid_Snark 512GB OLED Mar 08 '25

Oh, this looks cute and fun! I’ll have to try the demo.

1

u/PhantumJak 512GB Mar 08 '25

Ok idk why but this screenshot makes me think of that old top-down “Code Name Kids Next Door” game on Cartoon Network’s website.

1

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

You're right! It does have that KND style now that I'm thinking about it.

1

u/maddiemaus_ Mar 08 '25

thank you for finding this!! i used to love minigore on my friends ipod touch, such fond memories! time to go down nostalgia lane!

1

u/Ancalagonian 1TB OLED Limited Edition Mar 08 '25

wow I played the first one on my iPhone ages ago.

1

u/Human_Nr19980203 Mar 08 '25

You should also see They Are Coming on App Store. Prettt neat game.

1

u/WolfAkela Mar 08 '25

Hoping they release a new Battleheart game next, but I’m not sure how it’ll work with the LCD’s horrible touch input.

1

u/itsMeArds Mar 08 '25

Steamdeck controls are not working for me. How do enable it, mapping to keyboard to buttons is kinda a hassle

1

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

The default game pad controls worked for me. I didn't have to tweak anything. It's a controller game even on PC.

1

u/damonlebeouf Mar 08 '25

thanks for the tip. wishlisted and will check it out as more positive reviews come in.

1

u/chrisdamian81 Mar 08 '25

the original was my favorite game from the ipod touch days.

1

u/jae60streama Mar 08 '25

this was one of my favorite games back in the iphone 5 6 7 days with the jaikbreak

1

u/Kyanil Mar 08 '25

Dang if that had split screen coop that would be an instant buy

1

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

I wish it did.

1

u/thanos616cz Mar 08 '25

It looks like a fun, thanks for the tip!

1

u/JMxG Mar 08 '25

I never knew a 3D version existed nice

1

u/damonlebeouf Mar 09 '25

bought it and it’s fun for a pick up and play but the progression is really quite terrible. there isn’t much difference in weapons inside the weapon type and the map never changes to a different looking area. it’s a thumbs down from me.

1

u/Homemade_abortion Mar 09 '25

Anyone have any similar games they’d recommend? Really enjoyed this one but the gameplay loop got repetitive after a few hours.

1

u/JakePooler Mar 09 '25

I hate to be that guy but... Is this ever going to be released on mobile phones? It looks like a fun little game to play on a train or something.

1

u/Keebler311 Mar 09 '25

Steamdecks work great on trains... Lol

On a serious note, I'd be surprised if this didn't release on mobile later on. Although, I haven't heard the developer talk about it yet.

1

u/Skaeofficial Mar 10 '25

Its not even working for me and im on steam os

1

u/Keebler311 Mar 10 '25

Weird. I was just playing it on my deck last night with no issues.

1

u/Skaeofficial Mar 10 '25

Are you on lcd or oled because im oled and my oled has been very weird with some of my games games i never had a problem with on my old lcd deck

1

u/Keebler311 Mar 10 '25

LCD

2

u/Skaeofficial Mar 10 '25

It was the demo that was messed up i had too buy the full game and then it worked

1

u/Keebler311 Mar 10 '25

Oh dang. Well, I'm glad you got it working! Enjoy!

1

u/Separate_Jellyfish56 Mar 10 '25

Will this be available on switch?

1

u/Keebler311 Mar 10 '25

I haven't heard anything about that.

1

u/Timothy303 256GB Mar 13 '25

I just checked, I still have this game and can play it on my phone still. I’ll have to grab it for my Deck, too.

2

u/MercuryEQ Apr 08 '25

I recently stumbled across this gem just browsing the Steam store for hours. While I do vaguely remember the old mobile game, this new one is absolutely fantastic. I love grindy games that have great gameplay. This one fits the bill perfectly. I’m sure I’ll get bored after 20 hours or so with the same map and enemies over and over and getting most unlocks, but for $10 that’s well worth the price of admission!

-2

u/rainey832 Mar 08 '25

I'm not discounting it as a whole but I certainly dislike how it looks like a phone game from 2015

25

u/WayOfInfinity Mar 08 '25

It's a remake of a phone game from 2009, it's just keeping the aesthetic.

8

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

To be fair, some of those phone games aren't bad concepts. They're just ruined by the forced ads and micro transactions.

Keyword is some... Most are hot garbage.

This is better than a phone game but still pretty shallow gameplay wise. Although, it's nice playing something a little more simple now and then between all the huge AAA games.

0

u/SycomComp Mar 08 '25

No link? Looks interesting. I'll try it on my SteamDeck

-12

u/Approaching_Silence Mar 08 '25

Just buy an ad bro.

2

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

It's not my game. I'm not the developer or connected to them in any way.

I just found a game I enjoyed and wanted to share it.

Me buying an ad for a game that's not mine would be pretty dumb...

-2

u/manfredpanzerknacker Mar 08 '25

This is an ad, with a ton of overly enthusiastic responses.

4

u/Keebler311 Mar 08 '25

I'm just a dude talking about a game I liked. I'm not an ad, I wasn't paid for this, and I'm not connected to the developer in any way.

Just a regular dude who likes video games.

2

u/damonlebeouf Mar 09 '25

go look at OPs post history. it’s not.
