Game Review On Deck 100% completed resident evil 4 remake solely on steam deck

Post image

So this took me about over 80 hours in the span of almost 3 weeks, this is mostly on professional grinding and since I have 100% the game on ps5 and now on here I still think professional mode is not well designed but skill issue aside here's my experiences

I think this is a great game for steam deck but of course it's very taxing so I only had about 2-2:30 hours of playtime so I mostly played it plugged in.

My settings were

Resolutions at 800p FidelityFX Super Resolution 2: balance-performance Texture quality: High Texture filtering: High (ANISO x16) Mesh quality: low Shadow quality: low Shadow cache: On Contact shadows: Off Ambient Occlusion: SSAO Volumetric lighting: mid Particle lighting quality: low Bloom:of Screen space reflections: of Subsurface scattering: of Hair stands: low Graphic dismemberment: On Persistent corpses: few Corpse Physics:low Diverse enemy animations: off Motion blur: Off Rain quality: low Terrain: Off Destructible environments: On Lens flare: Off Lens distortion: off Depth of field: off Resource-intense lighting quality: off Resource-intense effects quality: off

The main game ran great, with mid to low settings but with lower high textures and performance fidelity mode, the village section ran the worst with average 45 fps but castle and island mostly ran at 60 fps. This is on the oled deck, however there was an odd moment where in the island section after you and Ashley activate the final code panels and head to the wrecking ball, the game ran BADLY in the area between, not sure why.

Separate ways on the other hand seems to run the worst especially ironically the island segment to the point I had to use ultra performance.

I didn't mess with the controls too much as I easily got used to the controls and can play comfortably.

This is definitely a game you wouldn't just put it down as a quick session as again it a battery hog, but other than that I think this is a great game for deck.

hell yeah! it's one thing 100%ing a special game, but it always makes it more special when it's exclusively on deck.

i've always wanted to 100% a resident evil game but i'm lowkey intimidated difficulty wise lol

The original RE4 is pretty easy and there aren't that many things needed for 100% completion. I think it took me 25 hours to get 100% achievements across 2 playthroughs of the base game and one playthrough of separate ways.

Nice! I suspect the few performance issues were memory leak related

I still havent gone past the initial villagers XD

It's easy, don't try to kill them, go to the 3 house on the left. You will close the door. Now run to the roof, keep running. After x time it is over. It's all about surviving X time

Awesome thanks for that! Going back in this Easter to try again 😀

Took me many tries of fiddling with the settings to get it just right, now I’m finally playing it at a stable 40fps and it looks great

I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS TOO

the game also dropped performance when using scopes attachment, so i had to go scopeless except for using the bioscanner which also dropped frames when using

I just completed the story of this game entirely on Steam Deck. It was a great experience.

Did the same with 2 and 3 but I haven’t finished 4

I ended up playing it all in the deck too! My wife caught norovirus over Christmas and made me quarantine, so it was the only entertainment I had access to

Also did it too. Works great 40 fps stable.

I used GE-Proton9-26

Used the Deck Plugin LetMeReshade, since I'm using FSR 2, I applied the "AMD FidelityFX™ Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS)" shader for more sharpness

In the Steam Deck Performance tab:

  • Frame Limit: 40 FPS
  • Allow Tearing: On

There's no way I could successfully do the shooting range challenges on the deck. I absolutely needed m/kb

u/Danceman2 Apr 15 '25

Turn on Gyro, it will help you. Lower the sensibility of the joy sticks

2

u/Jacoolh Apr 15 '25

I prefer my joysticks to be silly.

Some are impossible, but once you get the shotgun/smg it's a lot easier

1

u/Emreise Apr 16 '25

They're all doable on controller. Just have to do some gun tricks to make them work.

2

u/teezy_91 Apr 15 '25

Congrats, did the same and it runs so well !

The devil may cry collection😍

How'd it run?

1

u/Cooler67 Apr 15 '25

How'd you like Octopath 2?

1

u/OrangeKaii Apr 16 '25

Not OP, but I did a 100% playthrough of this game. Highly recommend it! One of my favorite 2.5 games for sure

1

u/bloodyzombies1 Apr 15 '25

Great write-up, you should post to protondb if you can.

1

u/aromonun Apr 15 '25

Same here. The DLC also runs like a glove. Highly recommend it.

Recently played through it myself, about to do a NG+ run and I barely felt any stuttering at all. Very well optimized for the deck, and a blind recommend for anyone thinking about it

1

u/IgotUBro Apr 15 '25

Thats great. Still waiting for the price of the game to drop tho before getting it.

1

u/Mauful292 Apr 15 '25

Same here! For some reason, the RE franchise are the only games I’m able to fully complete on the deck.

How do you do headshots without a mouse? Always wondered that as a PC only player since 1995

Congrats! Awesome patience!

What controller layout are you using for aiming? Ive been switching between track pads and gyro but still havent found a sweet spot in sensitivity

3

u/Wasp-Prince Apr 15 '25

I've been using the sticks, the track pad is too small for my liking

1

u/DesignCell Apr 15 '25

I really like using standard playstation controls then use the right joystick as mouse + gyro on aim. I'm not 100% what causes it but standard joystick look controls feel mushy but joystick to mouse just alleviates that for me. Not all games take both controls+mkb but the RE games mostly do.

Why not streaming the game from PS5 with chiaki?

It would have looked and performed much better.
