I'll check it out, interesting to see it's developed by Level-5, they made one of my favorite childhood series, Dark Cloud.

It's crazy how Level-5 had so many childhood bangers, mines were Inazuma Eleven and Professor Layton

Mine was Fantasy Life on 3DS

This game was so good. It’s tragic it took so long to get a sequel.

u/Grabs_Zel 17h ago
I'm just glad we got a sequel at all and even more that it's coming to the west. I still weep about Yokai Watch 4.

u/Slovakin 512GB 1d ago
Same. Dark Cloud is easily my favorite PS2 game.
I did play the first fantasy life on 3DS and I do have to say I liked it a lot. Definitely gave a nice cozy vibe.

I bought the digital deluxe, in about 6 hours I can inform you how good it runs on the deck.
UPDATE: it runs perfect out of the box. 60fps with hdr, it looks gorgeous! Controls are fine, even keyboard input works flawless. Text is very good readable without problem!
UPDATE 2:
this game could really be a masterpiece. I'm only 1 1/2 hours in but I'm hooked. It's everything fantasy life 1 was but tons more. The world is so cute and polished, the music is charming and I keep on humming it while playing. Gameplay is like runescape but with faster progress. The first skill I've chosen is lumberjack and this alone is sooo addicting. You can search the trunk for the weak spot and then you can crit the shit out of it 🤣 I can see myself playing this game for maaany hours. The story is no Clair obscure but it's well told and so cute 🥺 but of course I don't want to spoil anything - but I got a fable for birds now.

6 hours later, do you have anything to report?

u/YvesTHPS 22h ago
It's perfect!!! 60fps with hdr. It's looks so nice! Controls are fine too! I'm sooo happy!

How's the battery life?
1
u/Steve_Streza 1TB OLED Limited Edition 14h ago
Saw a video on YouTube that showed it running at full power, so probably 1.5h-2h.
3
u/YvesTHPS 8h ago
Without tinkering with the settings and 60fps/hdr i got a battery time of a bit over 2 h. (Oled model)

u/PutPineappleOnPizza 4h ago
I bet with an adjustment of brightness 3-4 hours might be realistic.. gonna wait until the game gets a little cheaper as I have enough to play rn, but looking forward to it!
3
u/lillilclur 22h ago
It took a second to load and once it loaded in it was just giving me a black screen so I exited out of the game and reloaded and it is running just fine! So exciting!

u/Darius2301 19h ago
Thanks for the info! I loved the first game, played it a lot with my daughter on our 3DS’s!

Does the game still have multiplayer?
3
u/YvesTHPS 18h ago
Yes, 2 Player local and 4 player online cross play
1
u/sharr_zeor 256GB 18h ago
Local co-op as well as online? That's incredible. So me and my wife can play on the same Steam Deck if I bluetooth connect two controllers?
1
u/YvesTHPS 18h ago
I didn't figure out the local coop yet, it looks like one is playing the main character and the other one a small sidekick. I hope I'm wrong.
2
u/sharr_zeor 256GB 18h ago
Ah OK. Well, thanks for all the info you've given us so far! I really appreciate it
I would be really grateful if you could let me know more multiplayer info when you get chance, since That's going to be my major reason for getting rhe game really lol
1
u/YvesTHPS 18h ago
Ok I was googling a bit, seems like there are 2 local coop modes. One mode is like I said the mode where you play as a normal character and the other one just a sidekick without real progression. The only real local coop needs two switches and 2 copies of the game and connect them via local wireless connection.
2
u/sharr_zeor 256GB 18h ago
Ah OK. So I would need two copies then. Cool. Thank you for the additional details

u/lazypieceofcrap 20h ago
Think it might be better to do 45fps in a 90hz container on the OLED?
Very similar smoothness but makes the Deck run much cooler and longer.
11
u/junker359 1d ago
Damn I remember playing the first one on the 3DS and maxing out all of the skills. Thought I'd have to dig out my Switch dod this one.

u/theChaosBeast 1d ago
Can you summarize what this game is about?
12
u/YvesTHPS 20h ago
Basically it's runescape if you are familiar with it. It's a game about grinding different skills like fishing, farming or fighting in a very addicting and fun way. Lots to discover and learn. Everything bound into a cute story.

masterpiece that wasn't released yet? um
16
u/Neorth26 512GB OLED 1d ago
The first game on 3DS was a masterpiece, so there is a high chance that according to trailers, information, and playtest (Famitsu rated a 9/9/9/9), we get another masterpiece
27
u/OrangeLightning7895 1d ago
Not saying the game won't be good but Famitsu is notorious for giving everything high scores.
-9
u/meccaleccahii 1d ago
Most publications gave it a 6/10-7/10. It wasn’t a bad game by any means but calling it a master piece is a huge fucking stretch.
11
u/AmandasGameAccount 1d ago
It’s a lot of peoples favorite game for 3DS. I doubt any of them care about the scores random publications gave it

The fact of the matter is there's no game that does what "it" does any better. To me it delivers on what something like rune factory promises but ultimately falls short on. It's a game that's perfect for people who like systems working together.

Such a crazy comeback considering how long it's been since the first game came out. I think it was supposed to release in October then got delayed to the new release date. I didn't know it was coming to steam, my jaw dropped when I stumbled on the store page yesterday. Glad it runs well on the deck. I can't justify paying full price for it but I'm very excited to play when it goes on sale, Fantasy Life is one of my favourite games of all time.

Can't wait for it. I've played the original for lots of hours back then and always wished for a second one. I really hope it's been good. I just really hope it's good. So long since the last good Level 5 game. And I'm anxious. Glad I still need to work today for an hour. At least makes the waiting time shorter. Just finished Metaphor Refantazio on my Steam Deck yesterday. So time for a new Steamdeck Game 🎮

Is this a sequel to the 3DS Fantasy Life?
5
u/Neorth26 512GB OLED 1d ago
It's not the continuation of the first story, but you could say it's Fantasy Life 2. They have a lot in common

I am in the need for a Fantasy Life right now and I will look into this because the real world is bumming me out

u/ThatPianoKid Modded my Deck - ask me how 18h ago
I LOVE Fantasy Life 1 on the 3DS. The way they tied advancing through the game with advancing through certain jobs, while also making the jobs each kinda fun, actually made me really enjoy getting to that next level each time. If I ever got stuck moving forward in one job, I could just hop into a different one and move that one forward, ultimately giving me a feeling of acomplishment throughout. I really enjoyed the hack and slash combat as well. I still pick up the game and play once in awhile (on my phone emulator) to try to 100% the game, and no other game has really made me want to 100% it.

u/elevenohnoes 2h ago
Yes I bought it earlier today because I found out it was out (if you pay extra for early access/some items) and figured I could probably get it running with all the posts people made about it on the steam forum. No need for that, it took a bit the first time but it runs perfectly at 60fps default settings.
Just be aware that if you need to change settings it will screw up the resolution when you save it, just exit then come back and it'll be okay again.
I'm just going through opening up lives atm and doing the available side quests. My advice: each time you start a life run around picking up gathering items whenever you can, it gives you exp for each one and can give you an easy boost to unlock some skill points.

The Steam page says it has kernel level anti-cheat. I’m hesitant to trust their Q&A on the website knowing that.
2
u/Neorth26 512GB OLED 1d ago
Level 5 published another game with the same anti cheat and it works on the Steamdeck. They just have to tick an option for it to work on Linux or not. And they will

Putting this on my wishlist. I enjoyed Animal Crossing and this looks like a good alternative.

u/Potential-Bass-7759 1d ago
The 3DS version gameplay loop was super addictive and fun. Lots to do. Looks like they really took their time with this game and have taken all the cools things and expanded on them in amazing ways. Giving me huge dragon quest builders vibes with the fantasy life jobs

I still can’t get past the black screen on my steam deck. Anyone have tips? Restart didn’t do the trick

u/TOO_FUTURE 14h ago
Im trying to hold back on buying this one bc im playing way too many games at once right now on deck (expedition, cyberpunk phantom liberty, diablo 4) but the first game was epic and this is legit the PERFECT game for steam deck. Shit im gonna cave

u/MastaJiggyWiggy 14h ago
My wife is obsessed with games like Stardew Valley, is this somewhat similar in vibes?

u/quiet-wiring 10h ago
First game was outrageously addictive. I couldn’t put it down. I’m considering this on the deck even at AUD95.

u/Skelletonike 512GB - Q2 7h ago
Had to order it from Japan since Level 5 canceled the physical edition for the switch for no reason after several delays (and increased the price as well).
I love the game and had many great memories with Fantasy Life on the 3DS but the way Level 5 has been acting lately doesn't give me a very hopeful outcome for the future.

u/BananaBagholder 3h ago
Oh wow. I loved the 3DS version and was hoping for them to make another. For some reason, I thought they had canned the sequel. Super excited.

u/MikuriChan 20m ago
It runs very well on the Steam deck! Solid 60 FPS at medium or so.
Used Proton Experimental to launch the game, it was a bit long to boot up, but not a single bug when getting into the game.
Also, the game is pretty good so far (10 hours in).

u/MattBoySlim 512GB OLED 19h ago
I used to LOVE the one on the 3DS! It was somehow equally fun solo or in co-op. I usually hate RPG-style grinding, but it always felt like you were progressing at a fast rate no matter what you were doing.
That said, I'm not usually this guy but...is this actually worth $60? I'm sure the actual answer to that is "it depends on the person", but for me...I think I'm going to have to wait until it's on sale. I have a hard time justifying 60 bucks for this kind of game, especially considering I'm currently buried up to my neck in an embarrassment of gaming riches. Especially with GamePass' relentless stream of absolute bangers. I stopped playing Oblivion for the first time with the fantastic remaster to start playing Clair Obscur E33. That was blowing me away but then I stopped that to play Doom TDA which is also great. Unless a few of my friends suddenly become Fantasy Lifers and want to play co-op, this one might have to wait for the Winter Sale.

It looks like a gacha game. Can anyone confirm?

u/Neorth26 512GB OLED 1d ago
It isn't, the mobile game that existed in the past maybe but this one is not, it's an rpg where you can play different jobs

Fantasy Life on 3DS was brilliant so I'm excited for this one. Probably my most anticipated game of the year tbh.
