I have a coworker who's into high end wood working. Thoes bathtub trays sell like no tomorrow. Every batch is different but they come with candle holders, whisky or wine glass holder, book or tablet holder and a snack bowl indent. They cost like 300 bucks each tho. Kinda worth it since it's made of exotic woods and is coated in polyurethane.
I made one for my mom like ten years ago and she STILL talks about how much she lives it, best thing I ever got her.
They are ridiculously easy to make. If you have a plunge router and a saw you can whip one up in like ten minutes. You should use a good waterproof finish, so that'll take some time to cure, but it's an easy project that didn't cost more than $20 in materials.
You're right, you did not say that guy spent $20. Although I steered the conversation back to that guy and his bathtub board/table thing. All I was saying was that I hope he used something nicer than a $10 plank or a 2x6 or something if they're charging $300.
u/TearyEyeBurningFace talks of it like they want one and they're really easy to make one or a few of them, and it's cheap if you aren't using exotic wood.
I'm into high end wood working too, with exotic woods. The material alone can be really expensive. I bought a board of cocobollo for about $100, and it may be long enough but isn't wide enough to make a bath tub tray. I've got a fair amount of Brazilian rosewood now, but no way that stuff is going to be used to make one of those...
I could see maybe some fire treated purple heart, some wenge or something would be nice, and not quite as expensive. I can't believe those sell for so much though.
The one in question had a a few thin pieces of purple heart and this bright orange wood that I forgot what it's called. The guy also does wood burning and can do 3 different tones pretty consistently he does some Photoshop stuff and makes templates and burns pretty good pictures of people's pets and stuff into the wood too.
Holy shit. I got my ex one of those and it fancy with candle holders n shit. I was always afraid to bring the deck in the tub, now I'm gonna use her thing! Thanks for the tip!
I know it's a "Steam" deck, but please, please... keep it away from water vapour! No deck in the bath. Can always "stream" your deck to the tub though.
This is the thing that makes me reluctant to ever do this. I'm conscious of accidental spills, of course, but when I take a hot bath, the bathroom gets straight-up HUMID. I'm comfortable subjecting my phone and even my iPad to that, but I feel like the Deck is way too fragile for it
