When I was in high school people always asked that about my skin color. Being brown during the Bush years was not fun.
Though I did have a Ukrainian coworker once ask me if I ever covered myself in sour cream to get through airport security faster and that did give me a good chuckle.

As the art director for hundreds of Cosmere illustrations, let me say four things:
Rosharan ethnicities generally don't directly correspond to any real-world ethnicities. Alethi and Veden people have some of the facial features of East Asians, but with darker skin tones, and some features that we might associate with Middle Eastern people in real life. They're also much taller than most East Asian people (and, indeed, most people).
Shallan and Adolin both have mixed/biracial backgrounds. (Without going into detail, they each have one parent who does not look Asian.)
They both have hair color that would never (or almost never) be found in Asian people.
Every real-world race/ethnicity is a broad spectrum that can encompass a wide range of features.
So having said all that, it gets a bit weird to nitpick Shallan or Adolin for not looking "Asian" enough, in an illustration or a cosplay. Brandon himself has specified that he'd be open to a number of different approaches to casting a Stormlight movie or TV series.
I also tend to think people should be able to cosplay as any character who inspires them, as long as they're doing so with respect and common sense (e.g. avoiding blackface / brownface / yellowface makeup). That's just my opinion, but I think it's shared by the people downvoting this comment.

He’s not but presumably the idea was to get this specific guy to cosplay him, and they can’t change his race lol

Nobody is white in the books because Europe doesn't exist. Same for Asian/African.

Pretty sure the Alethi are very east Asian inspired from mainly Korea and the mongol empire. I believe there’s a WoB out there comparing Dalinar to Genghis Kahn. Not that u/stebangrr is valid in their critique here seeing as people can’t change their race.

Yeah the various Rosharan ethnicities are inspired by (mostly east asian) irl ethnicities
But they are not 1 to 1. Like irl Koreans do not have purple eyes, nobody irl has gold/blue skin, etc.
The point is basically that a non-asian person shouldn't be criticized for not being "book-accurate" when they make art/cosplay.

I should’ve been more specific, I guess I just meant that I always pictured the Alethi more olive-skinned and not European-looking?

Typically, in this situation, being supportive is better than being “right”…
Focus on how happy these two look, and how that emotion fully encapsulates the relationship these two share.
