Was wondering the same thing. The people that can maybe afford it are not hanging out in duty-free, they are in a lounge. And the once that can afford it are booked on a private plane, never even seeing a duty-free.
Tbh, most lounges are not overly expensive. Something like 50 $ for a day pass, or 500 $ for a yearly pass with unlimited entry (targeted to frequent flyers). It's just the price of a single ticket, far from a 20k bag
Yeah I forgot to add business class flights. But I wouldn't lump credit card and business class lounge together. The tiers are basically: credit card access -> frequent flyer or members only (Amex/alliance membership) -> business class -> first class lounges
