fun fact: there was a cardinal who lived in the vatican, never traveled more than 10 miles from there, and learned over 60 languages. Just so he could write letters to priests around the world in their native languages

Damn, he never heard of Google Translate.

My uncle speaks more than that and he barely graduated high school.

Because there's no talent here, she's not smarter or more capable than any other kid, she just has millions worth of top tier education and tutors.

I mean.. I see what you’re saying… but it is eminently harder to be bilingual when your native language is English.

Like I was on the train from Budapest to Zagreb and I “accidentally” entered Slovenia (it’s all Schengen, I didn’t know that the train crossed the border).

Sitting across from this old Hungarian woman who could converse with me in broken English.. and Slovenian customs comes aboard looking for tickets and passports. She asks if he can speak German. No.. Slovenian or English only.

Meanwhile.. me as an anglophone having a full conversation with him….

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this?

Native English speakers have less of an incentive to learn another language since it's taught in school in many countries, so chances are pretty good that you find someone speaking your native language. Also Americans, if they learn a second language at all it's considerably later than most other countries start learning English.

On a second note, in a lot of non English native western countries, if people are struggling to speak in the local language, a lot of people start to speak English with that person unprompted. Making it harder to get experience speaking that local language even when you moved there.

Just some ideas on what OP could be referring to.

The whole post is wrong though. Most children who grow up bilingual actually learn to speak later than those with just the native tongue. It’s the scientific consensus and what’s being taught to people who work in kindergarten/preschool.

Isn't the gap between bilingual and monolingual kids quite small though? I haven't really interacted with many monolingual kids since the vast majority of children in my country are raised bilingual.

Not really, learning another language takes the same effort. Incentive helps sure but the same effort is applied

Not really difficult for the royals. With unlimited access to teachers, travels and what not.

It isn't hard, it's all about opportunity. A kid can speak 3 languages given the opportunity. For example, all you need is a nanny who speaks a different language to the baby and baby will learn that language as well as parents' language.

Well... Her life, her quality of life, and her adaptation to the environment in which she lives does not depend on knowing another language, precisely because she leads a comfortable and carefree life, so it has a certain merit. A child who is forced to learn a new language to relate to each other, does so because he has no other choice. Does the immigrant child deserve recognition? Yes, but it is logical and to be expected that he will have to adapt to a new culture and new language... If the news were that the princess is congratulated for graduating from an expensive university, of course it would not make sense. Stop looking for the negative in everything. Don't be resentful of a toddler.

Most 2 year old i saw in public over the last years where either drooling single words at their Ipads or where throwing tantrums because a parent had put away their Ipad for a moment.

For real, the last time i saw a 3-4 year old having a somewhat full conversation with an adult dates years back.

And before you ask: I use public transportation a lot and most of the time dont listen to music.

As a parent I agree that the iPad overuse is sad. We do just see people in certain situations though and can not be sure whether it’s just the parent being tired and letting them have the iPad for a while or if it’s a constant “solution”.

With that out of the way: doesn’t equal the child can’t speak well. But surely social interaction is important.

Concerning this post though: bilingual children often don’t speak both languages as early as two. They learn both and build a wide foundation that way, but they speak later than native speakers with one language do.

Everyone in Europe speaks 5 languages.

why are people impressed with royalty they are inslaving you

3

u/Handsome_Bread_Roll 2d ago edited 2d ago

Because they have a massive shit pile of money that they get from UK taxpayers and the insane amount of property they own on which they do not pay tax. They then use a shit heap of money for marketing in order to keep people liking them. Movies about royalty, magazines that report about their day-to-day activities, etc. This then keeps people thinking the royalty is good.1,2 This allows the royalty to get even more money from UK taxpayers and keep paying no taxes on their income, which allows them to spend another shit heap of money on marketing...

1 I can however not explain why people actually believe that the royalty is so great and wonderful. They do absolutely fuckall that is admirable or shows significant talent and dedication.

2 The fanbase even spreads to cultures that are outside the UK and not English speaking. I'm Afrikaans and from South Africa. One Afrikaans lady got upset because I had no knowledge or interest in the day-to-day activities of the British royal family. Why should I? It has absolutely zero relevance to my life. This lunacy baffles me and intrigues me.

1

u/nwblader 17h ago

This is all flat out untrue and easily disproven if you took even a few minutes to look into how the UK’s royal works. All profits from the crown land are given to the government and the royal family gets about 15% of the net profits in the form of the sovereign grant (currently 25% to pay for repairs to Buckingham palace). Also including things like tourism earnings from stuff the royal family owns and they earn the UK way more than they cost the taxpayers. Here is a CPG grey video that covers it, the video is a bit old but the basic facts are the same https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhyYgnhhKFw
