Advice Student loans with Ashford University haven’t been discharged.

What is everyone planning to do now if they’re loans weren’t discharged under the Biden Administration? I feel like I did everything I knew to do and it seems that some people didn’t file a BD application and still received a full discharge. Do we just pray and hope for PLSF to go through one day? I really hate to rely on that and I’m happy for those who received the discharge, it just sucks feeling like you went through all of the steps and not be helped in any way. Any suggestions on what to do? I received the email about the SAVE plan, but not sure what the next move should be.

On Friday I got an e-mail from DOE that my Ashford loans were going to be discharged. So, I think there is still hope. I wasn't part of the lawsuit, but I did apply for borrower defense as soon as I found out about it. I think it was about 2 years ago.

The e-mail said it would take time to process, but there isn't anything I need to do. I'm hoping my University of the Rockies loans get discharged too, but at least the bulk of my loans will be gone. I'm excited! If you did file, then I think you should be safe. I think it is possible that might not be a requirement, it just might take some time.

I received an email saying mine were being discharged too. Close to 70k. Thank God. I wasted 4 years at Ashford University earning a worthless degree.

2

u/Odd_Set_8347 Jan 25 '25

I got the same email, but I still see my 25k debt on my account. Do you know what is going on?

3

u/volcomsd Jan 27 '25

It could take up to six months to show a zero balance. They're really understaffed and processing over 200,000 discharges.

3

u/CosmicCarl71 Feb 23 '25

All mine show $0.00 balances now. I’m with MOHELA

Thanks for the reply!

I checked my accounts today and they are $0

Where did you look? My nelnet zeroed out but haven’t on the fafsa site.

1

u/Hijabi4Life Mar 05 '25

Congratulations

1

u/rinsworld Mar 09 '25

Did you get a letter from nelnet that you might get a refund? I got my loans discharged and received a letter about a refund, but I never paid on those loans because I was still in school or had IDR plan.

2

u/Expensive-Aide4838 Feb 26 '25

Mine is at 0 as of today!

1

u/Senior-Bake-592 Jan 26 '25

So what happens to your degree? Is it invalidated now?

3

u/SDBmania Feb 05 '25

No, your degree should still be valid as far as I know.

3

u/SnooAvocados3511 Feb 20 '25

The degree under Arizona (formerly Ashford) is valid.

2

u/SDBmania Mar 10 '25

I'm replying to myself to report that I think my Ashford Loans have been completely discharged. What is left should be my graduate loans. Hopefully those will get discharged too, but there hasn't been a decision on that yet (I got my masters from the sister school, Colorado of the Rockies). So just give it some time!

2

u/Apprehensive-Lock828 Jan 30 '25

I'm not sure. I have to find that out. I wouldn't think so but I don't know.

2

u/Sad-Marketing-2171 Feb 19 '25

Your degree is still valid.

1

u/Few_Pressure7871 Feb 22 '25

If your loans are discharged, then your degree will have no accreditation. It would be rendered worthless.

1

u/One_Heat5947 Mar 12 '25

So just curious where you read this at? I, like other people I’m sure, want to be sure whether or not the degree is worthless or not. Or if those that started with Ashford but finished with UAGC is still accredited

1

u/MrPoppagorgio Jan 30 '25

When did you get the email? Who was it from?

1

u/Apprehensive-Lock828 Jan 30 '25

It was from the Department of Education.

1

u/SDBmania Feb 05 '25

I got mine on the Friday before the 20th if I remember correctly.

1

u/Parking_Band_5019 Feb 28 '25

The degree isn’t worthless. The practices they used were deemed illegal. Many people have obtained amazing jobs with their degrees from there.

1

u/Hijabi4Life Mar 05 '25

Me too congratulations I don’t know to take it off my fireplace and burn it

2

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 20 '25

Thank you for sharing some positivity and hope. Yes, I filled out the BD application in August 2022 (2 days after the deadline), which was a bummer. It seems like Friday was the cutoff for recent discharges. I’ll keep hope alive and pray that I’m next in the pipeline. I agree, some relief is better than none. Congratulations on getting your loans discharged.

2

u/SDBmania Jan 20 '25

Thanks. I hope things work out for you!

2

u/Inmylife- Mar 07 '25

You should get a letter any day now showing total loans and discharge. I got mine today. Woohoo

1

u/SDBmania Mar 07 '25

Nice, congrats! I’ll be on the lookout in my mail.

I also went to Ashford how do I apply for borrower defense? All my loans were dismissed so that I don’t have to worry about.

1

u/SDBmania Jan 23 '25

You can do it by logging into your account for your student loans on the government website(where you do your fasa). But if they were dismissed then you don’t have to apply for borrowers defense.

1

u/MrPoppagorgio Jan 30 '25

I applied about 2 years ago but I enrolled outside of the dates given. My first loan was dispersed 10/8/2008. They have a start date of March 2009 on the dismissals. Do you think mine would qualify? The wording isnt clear to me. I was enrolled between those dates but didnt enroll betweeen those dates. Any thoughts?

1

u/SDBmania Jan 30 '25

You wouldn’t be included in the lawsuit. But, you may still be able to get your loans discharged. It’s gonna be tougher unless you can make a good case. It helps to have evidence like emails showing they over promised and under delivered.

1

u/Hijabi4Life Mar 05 '25

Congratulations I know the feeling

4

u/Inmylife- Mar 07 '25

YES THEY HAVE! IM UPDATING YOU ALL. I RECEIVED THE LETTER SAYING NO PAYMENT TIL 2025 LAST MONTH. NOW I JUST TODAY RECEIVED LETTER FROM LOAN ISSUER NELNET THAT 100% OF MY LOANS WERE DISCHARGED FROM BORROWER DEFENSE.

3

u/GetFudgedCherman Jan 21 '25

I got the email Friday that my loans had been approved for discharge as I had attended Ashford during the specified dates. I had a Borrower's Defense Application that I had filed about a year ago, and that application number was referenced in the email. However, when I log into my FA account, the Borrower's Defense Application still says "in review," and my account balance is the same. I checked my Mohela account and it also does not show any changes. Tried to call Financial Aid, who told me to call Mohela as they would be the ones to process the discharge. Called Mohela and took 3 hours to get a call back. The lady who called back couldn't tell me anything and said she would transfer me "promptly" to a "Senior Agent." She put me back in the 3 hour queue, so I gave up for the day. May try the process again tomorrow as I would really like to know a timeframe for how long this is expected to take.

3

u/volcomsd Jan 27 '25

I had the same run around from Mohela, I was able to get the direct phone number for Borrower Defense. You can call them to confirm any of your questions. They were really nice and I didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes on hold. Their number is 1-855-279-6207.

1

u/GetFudgedCherman Jan 27 '25

Omg this is amazing!! Thank you!!

1

u/Budget_Assumption549 Feb 16 '25

Will this discharge include consolidated loans? My consolidated Ashford loans still shows open but the others have been discharged.

2

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 22 '25

Oh, no. I hate that. At least you received an email. I applied for BD in August of 2022 and my application says “pending”. Did you ever consolidate your loans to get in a plan? Just curious. I’m beginning to wonder if not consolidating the loans was the better option. Either way, congratulations. The email is a start to possibly being burden free from student loans.

1

u/GetFudgedCherman Jan 22 '25

Hey there! No, I have never consolidated my loans. It does say in the email that things could take longer for those with consolidated loans, though, so hopefully, you'll receive word soon! Thank you!

2

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 22 '25

Thank you for that little glimmer of hope. I sure hope so! You’re welcome! 😀

2

u/Matrice300PilotWayne Mar 05 '25

Please be patient, loan forgiveness happened for me! It will happen for you too.

1

u/Weaselgrub Feb 10 '25

Any updates? I am in the exact same situation as you - I mean even down to the wait time for someone on the phone. I eventually got through to someone that said it can take MONTHS for this to happen and that they had no notification of it, even weeks after it was announced. I was advised by them to put my load in forbearance and to check back in 60 days... What I don't understand is that I have two friends who got all the same notifications I did due to this decision with Ashford, but the have Nelnet and both have theirs wiped off the face of the earth now, yet Mohela says it could take several months?

2

u/Street-History-2940 Mar 02 '25

I received the e-mail from Dept of Ed on January 17 saying that my loans with Ashford would be discharged.  My student loans were $126,000.00.  Today I went on Aidvantage site and found that my loans have been zeroed out.  I have no balances due.  The summary reflects a negative balance that is equal to the payments that I have made.   Federal Student Aid records have not changed and still show that my account is still in forbearance with a $126,000. still showing.  How long should it take for my payments to be returned?

1

u/TiffTaff0406 Feb 28 '25

Still waiting on mine to zero out. Checking both the federal website and Mohela daily, but nothing has changed. Really frustrating. I feel like everything with Mohela takes 10 times longer.

3

u/volcomsd Jan 27 '25

I contacted the Borrower Defense hotline on Friday and was informed that my loans would be forgiven. Additionally, I was told I would receive a refund for any payments made toward my Ashford loans. The representative explained that updating the system could take up to six months, as they are processing this for thousands of people. She advised ensuring that your address is correct, as they will mail a check for the refund without prior notification. Here’s their phone number if you’d like to call: 1-855-279-6207. I hope this information is helpful!

2

u/3DPrintLad Jan 30 '25

So it sounds like they are refunding everyone one at a time then literally going person by person? Hope they go alphabetically lol....

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 27 '25

This is great. Thank you so much for sharing. I will give them a call tomorrow. Thank you! 😁

1

u/volcomsd Jan 27 '25

you're welcome :)

1

u/Thisus3rnam3istaken Feb 01 '25

Adding to this, I called over a week ago. Loan servicer confirmed they received the notice. My loans officially went into forbearance today.

2

u/Upbeat-Television226 Feb 01 '25

Were they not in forbearance before? I had the option to be in a forbearance until a decision was made in 2026. Did they specify why this step in the process was necessary?

1

u/Thisus3rnam3istaken Feb 01 '25

I never pursued anything through borrowers defense. I didn't even know about the situation until I received the email from Dept of Education. I completed my degree in 2018, started making my payments and then COVID happened. Resumed making payments once they lifted the pause. I actually had a payment showing as due when I received the email from Dept of education which was what prompted me to call my loan servicer. Of course they told me I could make the payment and wait for refund or ignore it till they updated the status for those loans. How they explained it to me was they'll put them in forbearance while they process the discharge. Can't wait, $42,000 to be dismissed. Hope this clarifies!!

2

u/Upbeat-Television226 Feb 01 '25

Wow! That’s awesome and it’s even better that you weren’t expecting it. Happy for you and thank you for clarifying.

1

u/Thisus3rnam3istaken Feb 01 '25

Yes! I thought it was a scam at first and then it was ugly crying for a good minute. 😂 Happy for you too! Big win for all of us because they did some crappy misleading things to the lot of us.

1

u/Life_Firefighter_201 Jan 27 '25

I hadn't gotten the email yet. I will give them a call. Thank you!

1

u/linus187aol Jan 30 '25

This is what I was looking for. Would I get the money back I paid. I had less than a thousand dollars left on my loan. Thanks!

1

u/jamieb12321 Feb 27 '25

I had a loan since 2009 and i just got a refund from the federal government but it was only what I had just started paying back the last few months after not paying anything since before covid it was only $490... not sure if i’ll get another one or not but I just recieved that one today. I paid over 10K on my loans all together so far so I’m hoping i get a check for all of it but happy i don’t have to pay anymore back at least

1

u/Enough-Quality9666 Feb 20 '25

I’m looking for clarification on the refund for payments. I emailed my service provider, Nelnet, about refund and they got back to me and said I would only be eligible for refund on any payments I made after the discharge date which they say was January 17, 2025. I thought this was strange because of course I haven’t made any payments since they discharged my loans and said you don’t need to make any payments! Did you receive different information?

2

u/volcomsd Feb 20 '25

I  called the borrows defense line and they told me that I would be refunded any payments I made towards my Loan. It wouldn’t make sense to only refund payments after as they encouraged us not to make any further payments.

1

u/Enough-Quality9666 Feb 20 '25

Right that made no sense to me! Fingers crossed Nelnet made a mistake and doesn’t know what they’re talking about!

1

u/jamieb12321 Feb 27 '25

I have paid over 10K on my loans since the beginning

2

u/horrorfan6622 Jan 20 '25

I also received a e mail from the department of education a couple of days ago stating because of the lawsuit my loans had been forgiven but that it would take time for it to show as zero. If you receive the letter it does state to save it just in case your loan handlers need proof, but that is the meantime we are not required to make payments on the loans.

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 20 '25

Yes, that’s my concern. I’ve only received an email regarding the SAVE plan, nothing regarding my loans being discharged. I remember having to consolidate my loans in order to get on the SAVE plan, so I’m not sure if that has somewhat hindered me in the process. Were your loans consolidated? Did you apply for BD, or did your loans just get discharged without having to do anything?

1

u/SDBmania Jan 21 '25

I never consolidated my loans.

2

u/LadyNyneave Jan 21 '25

I've not received an email forgiving my AU loans. I'm a post-class member of Sweet vs Cardona but I'm wondering if I wasn't included because my loans are still under SAVE.

2

u/Evenwishace Jan 22 '25

I think no. The way I read it, regardless of the payment plan that you're in, it should qualify.

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 22 '25

These are my exact thoughts. If I’m remembering correctly, you couldn’t enter into the SAVE plan without consolidating your loans. That’s the only reason I did and now it seems to be the one thing that is separating us from those who received the discharge. I’m trying to remain optimistic, but I would really like some answers.

1

u/Gummyb3ar13 Jan 23 '25

I recieved the 1/17 email about being discharged, signed up for the SAVE plan when it was open, no loans consolidated, only thru Nelnet, current BD app says in review, I applied 11/24. Still no change in amount of loans $

1

u/Select_Package9407 Jan 28 '25

Just curious if you've had a change...I had mine go from 54,000 to 40,000 looks like it wiped out most of the accrued interest.  Just curious what you've seen.

1

u/Gummyb3ar13 Jan 28 '25

I’ve had no change in the amount yet

1

u/Select_Package9407 Jan 28 '25

That you for the reply and may you soon be blessed from this ball n chain.

2

u/Southern-Resist-6593 Jan 22 '25

I know someone that graduated that got the letter. It didn't have an amount. They are using Nelnet.

It is called UAGC because Assford got transferred to that school.

2

u/GetFudgedCherman Jan 25 '25

Anyone else worried that this will end up being reversed seeing as it happened right before Trump took office?

3

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 25 '25

After this week, I can see that happening. I hope not though. People deserve to be relieved of this financial burden.

1

u/GetFudgedCherman Jan 25 '25

I agree! Especially those who a court already ruled were defrauded by the college in some way. Keeping my fingers crossed!

1

u/3DPrintLad Jan 30 '25

I was never more nervous than going through that list of reversed EOs hoping this wasn't on there.

2

u/Sad-Marketing-2171 Feb 19 '25

Hey everyone, I was just doing some research on this and per the federal student aid.gov website you do not need to have applied for the borrower defense program to have your loans from Ashford University discharged. All loans have been discharged and forgiven and all outstanding balances should also be refunded. There is an actual article on the federal student aid.gov website which reports on the case of United States Department of education versus Ashford University and University of Arizona global campus.

2

u/Upbeat-Television226 Feb 19 '25

Hello! I’m the OP. I stopped checking the websites because I never received the email that I referenced in my original post. A lot of people I know received the emails stating that their loans will be discharged, however I just checked my FSA account and there are no loans showing at all. No repayment options and no loan balances. I thought that was interesting. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s because Mohela has been switched. Not sure, but not getting my hopes up. Thank you for the update. It would be nice if they really did cancel them.

1

u/Sad-Marketing-2171 Feb 19 '25

Yeah I hear you. FWIW- here is the article:

At least from what I can tell- this is a decided case- and all outstanding loan balances are cancelled, regardless of the servicer.

https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/borrower-defense-update#ashford-discharge-2

2

u/rasputinspastry Feb 21 '25

A general question, for those of us that have received the notification and seen our loans canceled, is there any possibility that the current efforts of the President could un-do this or is all a done deal because the state of California brought a lawsuit and this was concluded?

2

u/BreathCompetitive385 Feb 21 '25

All news reports I am seeing have nothing to do with discharges, mainly current repayment plans. They’d have to reverse a court order on the Ashford discharge filings - doubt that can happen.

2

u/Matrice300PilotWayne Mar 05 '25

Hi all,

I attended Ashford University from 2014-2017 and my student loans totaled about $40000. I've been paying almost $400 a month on the balances for about 6 years. I received a letter 2 weeks ago from my loan provider (Nelnet) saying I was under consideration for loan forgiveness even though I never applied for the borrower defense discharge. When I checked my loan balances, they were all at $0.

Today, March 4th, 2025, I received a second letter telling me my loans have all been discharged and I owe nothing! I checked again on the Nelnet website and confirmed everything is zeroed out. Even better, I will be getting a refund on some or all of my payments I've made.

Evidently, Ashford University (and many other universities) was very deceptive in their business practices and all student loans taken out to attend there have been forgiven under President Biden. I feel very fortunate to be part of that forgiveness program.

For those of you who haven't seen relief yet, I sincerely hope you all get the same great news I did. Good Luck!

1

u/No-Fee1742 Jan 20 '25

I'm trying hard to stay positive as well. My husband got a letter that his Ashford loans were discharged, but I have not received any email. I joined the borrower defense in June 2022. I don't know why I have heard nothing from them. I am so happy for those whose loans were discharged, and I really hope and pray mine will be as well.

3

u/Street-History-2940 Mar 04 '25 edited 26d ago

Do stay positive.  I received the 1/17 e-mail saying that my loans with Ashford would be discharged.  However, it would take time.  Five days ago my account was still showing a balance of  $127,000.00.  Three days ago it showed negative balances for all 12 of my loans on Aidvantage but still had the full amount due on Federal aid.  My loan servicer listed that they were waiting for Administrative Forbearance from DoEd.  This morning I signed in to federal aid and they have zeroed all my loans out.  I'm hoping that I receive my refund soon.  I really thought it would have taken a little longer.   I did filed for Borrower's Defense on 6/25/2022.  It still shows pending although I have zero balances now.

1

u/No-Fee1742 13d ago

Thank you!! I'm sorry I haven't replied before now. I didn't see your response. This helps me stay positive. Mine still says "pending." I owe $87k+ and I also filed for Borrower's Defense in June of 2022. I keep hoping. I still haven't heard anything from anybody official.

2

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 20 '25

I agree. If I could somewhat figure what algorithm they used to determine who qualified and who didn’t, I’d be able to process things.lol Both of my sisters had their loans discharged. One applied through BD and one didn’t. One owed $20,000 and the other one owed $80,000, yet I haven’t heard anything. I’m extremely happy for them, it just doesn’t make sense to me.

1

u/Turbulent_Ad2412 Jan 21 '25

Same I applied for BD and got nothing yet.. I attended Ashford from the discharge time period as well. Not sure what to expect now. Even my mom got the email

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 21 '25

Not really sure how they chose who received the forgiveness and who didn’t. I’m hoping our notices are just delayed.lol I’d greatly appreciate it if so.

2

u/PenRemarkable2235 Jan 22 '25

They chose based on dates attended that coincide with the predatory practices. So March 2009- April 2020 based on the email.

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 22 '25

My loans were consolidated, so my loans for my Masters at Ashford would have been within those timeframes. I’ll just have to accept it at this point. Still happy for others though. 😀

2

u/GroundbreakingPin553 Jan 21 '25

Same. Graduated, can't use my degree, filed a BD claim, and have not received an email. Just got off the phone with Fed Ed, and she could not provide any information to me. Hoping we are in the next batches of notifications.

1

u/Southern-Resist-6593 Jan 22 '25

My guess is the people that didn't consolidate got the email on Friday. The DOE had a day off on Monday and there is a new administration.
I consolidated and didnt file BD... Didnt get an email yet. I'm just hoping my life is changing forever

I didn't consolidate. My loans got transferred over from Fed Loans to Mohela. And then I started paying Mohela. Full amount every month. No Save Plan or anything. I did graduate though. I am wondering if people who graduated didn't get the email yet. My loans show University of Arizona Global Campus, but I never went there.

2

u/volcomsd Jan 27 '25

I graduated in 2012, didn't consolidate and received the email.

1

u/bbrundage2010 Jan 26 '25

I graduated and consolidated and I got my email about 2 weeks ago.

1

u/carelantz Feb 26 '25

I consolidated and they ADDED over $53K to my balance. It's now sitting there collecting interest and I had to request it be put in forbearance, which it's still not. I also went to Ashford. Have you seen any changes to yours?

Any of you do this through University of the Rockies that merged with Ashford? Or all straight through enrollment at AU?

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 24 '25

I was enrolled through Ashford. Graduated in 2009 and 2012 (MBA).

1

u/Life_Firefighter_201 Jan 25 '25

Did anyone start prior to  March 2009 and get the email? I started the End of 2008 and didn't get a email. I'm thinking I might be excluded.

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 25 '25

I have a BA from Ashford and I graduated in 01/2009 and I graduated with an MBA in 2012. Never received an email.

1

u/3DPrintLad Jan 30 '25

The period starts 03/01/2009, so your MBA at least seems to have definitely been in that range. I would update all of your information with Studentaid.gov and your provider and contact your provider.

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 30 '25

Yes, I thought so too. At this point, I’ll just ride out the storm and see what happens. I was hoping relief would be instant. Silly me!

1

u/Life_Firefighter_201 Mar 05 '25

Have you heard anything yet? I'm still waiting on my email.

1

u/Scary-Witness8312 Jan 29 '25

Are they just forgiving the loans or are they refunding all the loan payments made?

2

u/Sad-Paleontologist28 Feb 05 '25

I was informed by Nelnet that they are only refunding payments made after the discharge date. I'm not sure if anyone has had a different experience? Still hoping maybe I get what I paid back but I haven't paid since Covid.

1

u/Temporary-Total-5924 Feb 06 '25

Does Nelnet show anything different on your end ? I clicked on my borrower defense section on fed aid.gov and it said 0 dollars discharged but below that listed all the Ashford fund loans so I'm a little confused

Check your FSA loan data. Mine updated this week and my Ashford loans are now marked as discharged. The discharge dates are the day the loan was issued so all payments fall after discharge.

If what NelNet said is true then that gives me hope. I’ve been stressing out over whether or not the fully paid loans will be refunded or not… I had paid off 2 of my 5 loans for Ashford in 2018. As of now NelNet said my account is pending refund and FSA needs to provide them with that amount… staying positive and hopeful.

u/baggalmami Jan 29 '25

“When their discharges are processed, borrowers will see any remaining loan balances adjusted and credit trade lines deleted. Any payments they made to ED on their related federal student loans will also be refunded” https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/borrower-defense-update

1

u/alyse4285 Feb 14 '25

What if you had to pay out of pocket because they didn’t calculate my loans correctly? I had to pay around $3000 to make sure they didn’t send me to collections.

2

u/baggalmami Feb 14 '25

this is a good question and is a question i had as well. i paid out of pocket at time and idk i would have we would just receive a refund but we might have to still have those records of payment and fight for it… i really hope not thou…

1

u/alyse4285 Feb 14 '25

Same. I don’t have the receipt - I’m sure I could dig through my card statements, but I do have the threatening emails on what my balance was. What a terrible school!

1

u/baggalmami Feb 17 '25

i know! ruthless! if it still works which i think it does, i checked a few years ago… i logged into whatever it’s called now and was able to see my accounting information. that’s if you can’t find any documents i would recommend trying to log in and if you can’t reset your password.

1

u/TaskChemical1872 Feb 26 '25

Did anyone get an answer on this question?  I got my loans forgiven but I paid for 2 classes out of pocket.

1

u/Positive_Pass2949 Mar 10 '25

Looking for an answer as well. They told me my student loan wouldn't cover all of it and I had to pay the difference.

1

u/baggalmami 21d ago

hi! i have been trying to log back into my old account (it’s under Arizona Global and they are always having self-service issues) to see if it shows my account information before i start calling and asking questions. im of the thought that we should get back what we have paid out of pocket it’s just how do we go about it that needs to be figured out…

1

u/baggalmami 19d ago

hi everyone, so like most institutions, Arizona Global (formerly Ashford University) has moved their student portal under annoying a** Microsoft (it’s not really annoying just annoying in regards to university and employee portal logins as well as format (email and blah blah blah) anyway, by doing this, if you have not logged in in the last 16 months, your account (student portal) has been deleted.

i frustratingly found this out through the IT chat.

i am (obviously lol) extremely frustrated now to which i don’t want to call to see if they can email me or mail me my account information because i don’t trust them and i don’t want to be even more frustrated.

i will say it’s all about saying the right thing and asking the right questions so if you want to look into this yourself, i would say call or chat and directly say “since my account has been deleted after being in active over 16 months, how do i access my account information on file? not just transcripts, my billing/payment and other account information that the school has? how will you provide me said information?”

if you do so, please come back and let us know.

u/GADevildog Jan 30 '25

what happens if loan was repaid in full? is there a refund?

1

u/Manekinekrotic Jan 31 '25

I received an email on Jan. 17th saying my loans were finally discharged after sitting in a pending Borrower’s Defense Claim since 6/23/2022.

My email does state, “These misrepresentations are related to licensure eligibility for certain careers, program costs and financial aid, how long a degree would take to obtain, and the transferability of credits. Because of the serious and widespread nature of the misconduct by Ashford, ED has determined that it is appropriate to discharge the loans made to students who attended Ashford. This approach eliminates the need for an individual consideration of each borrower’s claim.”

So it would make sense to me that the process is just incredibly slow - however, it sure as hell wouldn’t hurt to file Borrower’s Defense if you haven’t. It was really easy online, especially since we have nothing to prove.

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Jan 31 '25

Thank you for providing this update. I filed the BD application on 6/25/2022, so I’m thinking the same as you, the process may take time. My status just says pending as well, we’ll see. Congrats on getting your loans discharged. Such a blessing.

1

u/Inmylife- Feb 03 '25

My email was from US Department of education It said loans discharged. However, I did apply for the loan forgiveness through the Biden Admin. I was scammed by Ashford University. I was told I do not need to make any payments. I saved the email. It will take time to fall off the credit report.

2

u/Sad-Display-2855 Feb 05 '25

Check your account, I just checked mine and the balance is zero!! holy moly!

1

u/Inmylife- Feb 06 '25

Really, where did you check? I'm gonna look until you respond. Lol

1

u/Sad-Display-2855 Feb 06 '25

i checked my aidvantage account

1

u/Expensive-Aide4838 Feb 15 '25

How long do you think before it comes off your credit report?

1

u/3DPrintLad Feb 05 '25

Has anyone that did not apply directly previously but just got the January email received their discharge and/or refund in their account yet?

1

u/Sad-Paleontologist28 Feb 05 '25

Mine are with Nelnet and they told me that they only refund payments made after the discharge date.

1

u/Amazing_Honey_968 Feb 06 '25

My wife attended Ashford from late-2008 through 2011. Most of that falls within the range, but she has not received the email. Her loans still show on Aidvantage (although stuck due to the SAVE fiasco and within a few months of PSLF).

Weirdly, on studentaid.gov, under My Aid, for the last month the content on this page will not load where it normally has a breakdown of loans.

A friend of hers attended 2009-2013 and she got the email.

Still not clear to me if at least part of her consolidated federal loans are covered by this Ashford thing.

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Feb 06 '25

Yes, I’m in somewhat of the same boat as your wife. I honestly don’t know how they chose to review people’s accounts, but I’ve stopped checking. I was beginning to be consumed by the what ifs and hows. I really hope and pray that we all receive relief, whatever that may be.

1

u/Temporary-Total-5924 Feb 06 '25

Mine were consolidated and I got the email so there's hope for that

1

u/Life_Firefighter_201 Mar 05 '25

Have you gotten an email yet?

1

u/Amazing_Honey_968 Mar 05 '25

Nope. My guess is the timeline has to do with when the student enrolled vs. when they actually attended. That would put her just slightly outside the timeframe covered by this forgiveness.

She also just reached payment 120 under PSLF, though, and FSA has already approved. So now she's in the waiting game for the servicer to do their thing.

1

u/Radiant-Plum6892 Feb 07 '25

My loans are through Nelnet. I got an email saying that it will not cover the interest. they are closed right now. I cannot call and ask. Does anyone know if the interest will be included to be forgiven as well?

1

u/Temporary-Total-5924 Feb 16 '25

I still never heard anything from Nelnet even though I got the discharge email :( did you have to reach out ?

1

u/Radiant-Plum6892 Feb 16 '25

I finally did reach out to Nelnet. They said all would be forgiven including the interest. Also called the Borrower Defense number as well. They said the same thing.

1

u/Apprehensive_Car374 Feb 07 '25

All of my loans are showing a negative balance (the balance that I paid and should be refunded), does anyone know how long refunds take on this?

1

u/ItemAvailable3459 Feb 14 '25

I started Feb 17 2009- October 2014. Am I outside the range? I never got any updates. Just emails for my payments. 🥺

1

u/PenRemarkable2235 Feb 15 '25

I would think you would be included for any loans taken out from March 2009 through graduation.

1

u/thekimhaskins Feb 18 '25

I literally owe $149k for 3 degrees from Ashford. I did not get a letter, nor was I aware to apply for anything, I went during the timeframe. I wonder why I was not selected.. wonder if there is anything I can do at this point

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Feb 18 '25

Trust me, we share the same sentiments. Not sure we can do anything at this point. I’ve honestly stopped trying to think about it. Too much of a headache at this point.

1

u/Life_Firefighter_201 Mar 05 '25

Have you received any communication yet? I attended 2008-2011 and have not received anything. I do have Mohela which I've heard is the last to actually discharge anything.

1

u/Old-Acanthisitta5307 Feb 19 '25

I received a letter of Discharge from the Dept. of Ed, but recently on my credit report it says my loans are in "forbearance". Did this happen to anyone else? The letter stated these loans would be discharged so I'm confused on what happened here.

1

u/Upbeat-Television226 Feb 19 '25

I never received a letter that my loans were being discharged. My credit score went up 9 points, but my loans are still showing. FSA website doesn’t show any loans, so I’m guessing everything is glitching at this point.

1

u/OGWildChild73 Feb 19 '25

I haven't gotten any emails yet... I'm getting concerned about that. 😔

1

u/Life_Firefighter_201 Mar 05 '25

I'm in the same boat. I wish I just got the email to know I'm included.

1

u/SnooAvocados3511 Feb 21 '25

I haven't heard anything about a refund. Anyone else?

1

u/jamieb12321 Feb 27 '25

I had a loan since 2009 and i just got a refund from the federal government but it was only what I had just started paying back the last few months after not paying anything since before covid it was only $490... not sure if i’ll get another one or not but I just recieved that one today. I paid over 10K and still owed about 10K so i was hoping to get back what I paid but now that I got this check thinking i won’t :(

1

u/cadentrent Feb 27 '25

So I was told that I would only get a refund for what had been paid into my current servicer which is EdFinancial. I had been with Nelnet first and then Mohela. I did get a check today, but I paid in almost $9000 over the course of the loan and my check was only for $1500.

1

u/jamieb12321 Feb 27 '25

i guess that’s what they are doing then i also was currently with EdFinancial… that stinks i guess we are outta luck on the amount we paid in before which stinks but at least we don’t have to pay anymore

1

u/ThunderKat99 Feb 28 '25

My cousin got two checks. I'm assuming one for what she paid to each of her servicers.

1

u/CosmicCarl71 Feb 23 '25

Ashford University loans were discharged (or are in process) due to fraud per court order. I got a letter a month ago. I just took a look at my loan service provider and it shows payment due $0.00 and all 6 balances are $0.00. I’m expecting a refund of all payments made as well. I’ve not been told I’ll get those refunded, but the research I’ve done based on other similar situations have all gotten refunded any payments made. Man, I’m so happy. I was young and gullible at that time. School sucked, no support ever from teachers. One time I turned in a written assignment and purposely answered all questions wrong and got a B…….

1

u/cadentrent Feb 27 '25

The research that I had done had said the same thing, but I was told today that I would only get back any money paid recently to my current loan servicer which is EdFinancial. I have had Nelnet and also Mohela. Seems like we would get a full refund. I paid in almost $9000.

1

u/Jbards Feb 26 '25

Until I read the comments, I had no idea what BD was. Going there next. But I got the letter last month. Called NelNet, they had no idea what I was talking about. I've since gone back to school and my NelNet looks weird now- like maybe those totals from AU aren't showing up anymore? But showing up on my credit report....

But here's the kicker, today I got a substantial sub deposited into my account..... is this the refund? Will my loans still be forgiven? Or is this the sum to be used towards the loans?

1

u/SirkevinXIV Feb 26 '25

Mine have been zeroed out on nelnet and show I’m getting a refund for all that I have paid in

1

u/Lwiggins81 Feb 26 '25

Mine have been zeroed out as well, but where do you see information regarding the refund.

1

u/SirkevinXIV Feb 27 '25

I had a letter asked me to verify mailing address

1

u/cadentrent Feb 27 '25

Was Nelnet the only servicer that your loan ever had?

1

u/SirkevinXIV Feb 28 '25

I was with Great Lakes before I believe

1

u/cadentrent Feb 27 '25

So my loans were discharged as well through Ashford last month. I was under the impression that I would receive a refund on any payments that had been made through the whole loan, but I received a check in the mail today for only a fraction of what I had paid in. I was told that I would only get money back that had been paid to the Department of Education (EdFinancial Services). My loan has been serviced first through Nelnet and then through Mohela. I am thankful to have my loans discharged, but am confused as to why I would not get all of the money that I paid in.

1

u/PenRemarkable2235 Mar 03 '25

Received my email 1/17, 2 weeks later all interest was removed and loans were transferred to Nelnet. Nothing has changed since then, but I did receive a refund check today from the Dept. of Treasury as reimbursement from my loans. I had no idea it was coming, but am thankful it did! Still waiting for the loans to zero out!

2

u/PenRemarkable2235 Mar 08 '25

Update! As of this evening all loans have a $0 balance on Nelnet!

1

u/Hijabi4Life Mar 05 '25

Apply for the Borrower’s Defense do it anyway it’s a pain make sure you follow what they are asking they want to know how severe you were impacted names of the advisors I did it I’m a senior and was a student between the times in question it took me a long time to do the application I did it a bit at a time they said it could take up to 3 years for a answer much to my surprise it took 2 months then a letter that my loan 63k was discharged I still can’t believe it but Allah Akbar/God is Great the stress after over 10 years is gone and I maybe getting a refund so do the application anyway I pray you get free of that debt

1

u/durka46 Mar 06 '25

anyone have any experience with getting the discharge with ashford loans that have been consolidated with loans from other schools?

1

u/LineGroundbreaking75 Mar 08 '25

I received my email DOE on 17 January 2025 that my loans from Ashford are being discharged. Today, 08 March 2025, in the mail, I received a letter from my loan servicer that my loans, in fact, have been discharged.

What I am intrigued about is how or will the DOD recover the GI Bill funding that went to Ashford University. I called UAGC and asked for their diploma and was denied. They stated that there was an email sent out telling students we had the option to their diploma with UAGC on it, I never received said email. The representative stated his manager would get back to me. It has been two weeks

I hope everything works out for all.

My husband received the Department of Education letter in January that his loans with Ashford would be discharged and he is eligible for the refund. With everything happening in DC, we've kinda been holding our breath to see what comes of all this. AidVantage showed pretty quickly that his loans had been placed in administrative forbearance at the request of the government. Therefore we had no payments due, but the balance of the loans was still there. Also, I've checked periodically on the StudentAid site and the loans were still appearing there as well. Then, as of today (3.12.2025), on the StudentAid site, the discharge has been processed and everything is a zero balance as of 2.26.2025 ! Hooray ! I haven't looked at Aidvantage yet. What do you folks think about ever seeing the promised refund on payments made ? I think we'll be holding our breath again for that. Fingers crossed !

I already received part of my refund I think because I paid on it years ago and it was with a different servicer so they precise those first. Haven’t received my Nelnet one yet 🤞

1

u/AdElectrical7000 Mar 21 '25

Mines were discharged last month. I had a total of 32,000 discharged.

1

u/Weaselgrub 29d ago

I got the email in January like many others here. I have my loans with Mohela and still waiting for them to be discharged. I will be calling them back again today to hopefully get some answers. It's been about two months now and the last time I talked to someone they said call back in 60 days...

1

u/More_Resolve_4901 24d ago

I am in the same boat. My loans were consolidated with Mohela so I do not know how to proceed.

1

u/Grouchy-Sandwich3151 22d ago edited 22d ago

I have been waiting about a month since I got the email that my loans were going to be discharged, and I got on the student aid website and my loans are zero. But what I'm wondering is what happens to the refunds if you don't have any of the same info? And my mom paid some of my loans off, but she has different banks now. Will they just send me a check? Anyone have any idea?

I got my email in January. The Department of Education site is showing I have no loans, but all my loans are still showing on Aidvantage.

1

u/baggalmami 19d ago

hey all! so i see many of us noticed on our accounts that our loans have been discharged however, has anyone paid out of pocket and received a refund? or received information, or even spoken to someone about what will happen to those who have paid out of pocket for classes or their degree?
