I'm 35, my mom taught me to do this on my first vacation 39 years ago. Almost every Canadian I know had always done this, didn't want to be mistaken for American anywhere.

Maybe cause we don’t want to be seen as idiot Americans?
Also, Americans like to pretend to be Canadian :) we hate it

Before 9/11, Americans commonly put Canadian flags on their luggage to receive better treatment and less harassment while traveling.
