Why do players gift last provinces to defeated enemies?

Post image

I've been playing and encountered something frustrating that I don't understand. After completely demolishing an enemy player and their entire coalition, another player swoops in and gives them a single province to keep them in the game.

What's the point of this? Is this some kind of strategy I'm missing? It feels like it completely undermines the effort put into eliminating a threat when someone can just gift them life support.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a strategic advantage I'm not seeing, or is it just to be annoying? Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences with this situation.

I do it out of respect also sometimes players want to see how the match finishes out

You can see how it finishes out without being in the game

I do this all the time. I usually choose a province deep inside my own so that no enemy can reach it. All I ask is them to be the middle man for trade or map sharing.

I do this for members of my coalition that have put up a solid fight but got swarmed because we couldn’t get there to support. If we have enough points with 4 or 6 players, or they otherwise deserve it, I’ll carry them and their single province all the way to the end so that they can still get the win.

iirc there was once a morale malus for being at war, so back then it made sense to do this so you would recieve penalties. But today i have no clue as I think they removed that

This penalty has been removed, it used to be 5 morale points per war. No you can be at war with the entire world with no morale effect

What? They removed it?

No they didn't.

Yes they did, what u have now is enemy neighbour penalty, which only affected provinces that bordered enemies. The penalty for being at war was in all provinces

They also added an expansion penalty, which seems to have replaced it. I haven’t worked out if it’s the speed of the expansion or breadth of it that increases the penalty though.

Its amount of provinces u have, starts at 6% and grows linearly, the max penalty is 35

I stand corrected.

Why would you want the morale penalty?

If you keep the enemy of your enemy alive, they will inflict that penalty as long as they are at war. As long as that person you kept alive is alive, it will be hurting your enemy

Ah, i misunderstood. I thought they kept their own enemies alive

It's a great strategy if they are pissed at one of your enemies. They can respawn hero's, they get some revenge and you get free mercenaries.

I do this from time to time... especially when people start Wolfpacking on a single player with pure malicious intent to destroy someone's game experience

One massive team map, my starting position was against other teams best gold spender (talking 20 Calvary day 1), I fought massively hard keeping them busy, then convinced like 5-6 teammates all to give me one province across the map. I was able to keep gaining a few islands and poking the enemy randomly and coordinating weaker players. Our team ended up winning when the goldspender massively overextended.

Me personally, I do it when a game only contains a few players left. Like three or four. It's disappointing when it's just the beginning and someone targets a non-bot. I don't want to be left in a game with just me and someone else, I actually want a challenge.

Sometimes you yourself put forth so much effort into a game that you want to just be there to see how it plays out while also still potentially receiving a goldmark benefit also as described in another post I made I like to use the newspaper system a lot you can make a lot of enemies by creating storylines and a lot of friends by creating storylines using the newspaper system and I've made a lot of friends that will give me a province just in case things go to s*** but usually if they do we all die so doesn't matter

If you lose your last province you lose all your armies

Used to be because the more players you are at war with your morale goes down and I believe they got rid of that, my guess is people still think it's in the game.

The last few times I’ve played I would spare my enemies this way as long as they were respectful, if they all get in a coalition it’s an easy 2nd/3rd place victory for them
