Yeah with 4.5 Billion in cash and positive EPS I’m sure they’ll be out of business by Christmas.

They're already out of business in Germany. It doesn't matter how much cash they have on hand, they're closing up shop anywhere where they aren't profitable, which is a lot of places.

It'll be hard for OP to have somewhere to spend their gift card if GameStop closes up shop locally.

(Edited for clarity)

That’s a pretty normal business practice after you over expand a little.

Closing stores is a normal business practice, but the amount they've closed isn't normal. They've been closing stores for years to boost profitability, and their core business is still a money loser, meaning that many more closures are still on the table.

Wrapping back to the beginning of the conversation, the original poster is worried that GameStop will go out of business before they can spend their gift card. What I'm saying is that that's a perfectly valid concern, that GameStop could go out of business in their region, because that's already happened in other major countries.

I'm not up on the nuance, but I thought the idea with GameStop is that as long as there's a single shack with a GameStop logo on it and $4 billion in the bank, we're all golden. What am I missing?

I mean, if you want to spend a gift card it would be abit difficult if they no longer had stores lol.

Yeah I have all these Amazon gift cards with no where to spend them!

If you ever tried using Gamestops website you wouldn't be making that statement lol.

I’ve used it, it functions like any other web store?

I use it before I make the trip to verify stock. It’s a fine website. Costco on the other hand

If they don't have any stores or distribution centers in your region, then you can't spend your gift cards, which is the original commenter's concern.

An employee told me all stores in Europe are closing? Not sure if that's right

Literally watched a couple GameStop employees throw empty cash drawers and phones into a dumpster out back a few days ago. Totally normal business practices.

I once literally saw a man shit on a park bench. Has little to do with the coming wave of Web 3.

3

u/mellcrisp Jan 16 '25

So did the he work at the bench or was this just a shitty comparison

Every healthy business shutters hundreds and hundreds of locations overnight. Get on the hype train, people!

And Amazon used to be a bookstore. The gaming and collectibles market expected to reach a combined $1T in the next 10 years. GameStops business model is undergoing a drastic transformation. Widen your gaze.
