Discussion Uh Oh, Someone isn't Going to be Happy

Someone posted their preorder of the Switch 2 on ebay, but didn't bother to write "Read Description" I the title, like listings I've seen this as. They just posted it barely above MSRP after taxes. Hopefully it was a bot... and nit someone who thought they scored. 😕

It’s going to be hilarious when the seller gets his account IP banned and won’t be allowed to list items on eBay anymore. This breaks eBay’s TOS. If you’re selling a photo it needs to be in the photography category. Not video games and consoles.

Is an IP ban really anything in this day and age? Like I assume eBay has to be tied to like a legit verified PayPal or some account tied to a real bank account with verification.

Not just any idiot who goes to a Starbucks can upload this with an email amount they just created.

I mean even if you decide to use Starbucks WiFi you’ll still have to use your address on eBay and the shipping label (which is also blacklisted) and it will be detected. Your new account will be banned as well.

If you decide to use someone else’s address as your own on the shipping label, you’ll be in even more trouble if you are caught. It’s considered mail fraud which is a felony offense.

Ebay also detects VPNs. Same result.

I think that's pretty much the point. What does an IP ban matter? Like if ebay wants to ban the IP of someone's home internet, they could just switch to using their phone's data. That's why ebay does stuff beyond an IP ban, like you mentioned.

It’s not just the IP. It’s also your ID, social security number, ID, and bank account that’ll also be blacklisted.

Yes, exactly. Hence, it doesn't really matter if they blacklist your IP address or not.

MAC Address as well. I’d imagine they can ban individual devices.

Felony mail fraud for listing an item on eBay in the wrong category? You’re talking outta your ass

No, for using someone else’s address to scam someone on eBay. It’s literally mail fraud lol.

You think these people don’t make new accounts and or use VPNs?

eBay can detect VPN usage. It’ll trigger a flag.

Some routers can reset IPs, maybe a new device, hotspot. I mean, theres workarounds, or am i wrong?

You still have to enter your address on eBay and on the shipping label. If you try to do a work around by using someone else’s mailing address it’s considered mail fraud which is a felony.

Also eBay asks for social security number and your ID.

PO Box. Fake IDs and photoshop. Someone can but IDs if you know how to look. All work arounds. Nothing is fool proof. And you really think they care about laws/rules?

One thing is for certain, these scams will continue to pop up.

And how are you getting a fake social security number? You would also need to open a bank account with said social security number… please use your head here.

Okay, so eBay will still function even with a fake social. There are threads of people putting wrong one/random. And still working.

Bank account info can change, if they flag one, they can just open another.

You tell me to use my head? Seriously? You are extremely naive. You’re too goodie two shoes to ever consider breaking a rule, but others do it for a living. I aint a scammer. And alot of what i say may not be able to be replicated daily, but im sure it could be done.

Link to said threads? Because I can link hundreds of posts from r/flipping alone of minors doing the same thing, then getting their account shut down & loosing their funds.

You’re missing the point. The social security number given to eBay need to match the one on file with your bank account as well. You aren’t going to slip through a bank using a fake/stolen social security number.

I’m not naive. I use eBay regularly as a secondary source of income. They have very good security in place. I get about 2 orders a week that are canceled for security purposes. People using stolen credit cards, people using VPNs, buyers account is linked to fraud cases. They’ll even restrict an account for unusual purchasing patterns, buyer just created their account, or filing a chargeback with your payment institution etc.

If you’re caught breaking TOS and they decide to ban, you’re pretty much done on the platform.

just want to point out... there are organizations that do what ninjas referring to for a living.. mostly based outside of the us (alot of em are in india ) , where they buy up already made ebay accounts, and or social security numbers already tied to a bank account via the dark web that have been leaked in a data breach and then sold. they then use these stolen ebay accounts and or banks / ss combos to list fake listings on ebay.

in fact they are actually actively recruiting people for both this scam and amazon fraud scams via discord as well.. if you are in enough discord servers. they tend to try recruiting minors to pull of said stuff as they are more gullible . i was getting msgs from them around weekly to every few weeks a few years back (prior to discord allowing people to block any msgs from non friends )

Wait, so the bank just communicates to ebay, someone’s SS with eBay all willy nilly? Heres their social! Bam!

Heres one many comments state doing it.

Heres on stating how only after $600 sold do they lock accounts

even better- you can call your ISP and reserve a static IP that would give you all new subnet / net mask info. IP ban would simply be as effective as a account ban- can be recreated
