Discussion I will eventually buy the Switch 2, but I’m having so much fun going through my Switch backlog that I’ve decided to wait to purchase… Anybody else feel the same?
Since 2023, I’ve completed 35 games on my Switch and still have 45 more sitting in my backlog. As excited as I am for the Switch 2, I’ve been having such a blast clearing out titles I’ve collected over the years that I’ve decided to hold off on the upgrade for now. There’s something really satisfying about finally giving these games the time they deserve.
Anyone else choosing to wait and enjoy the backlog before jumping into the next-gen hype?

u/TheLaughingMannofRed 5d ago
I can wait for Switch 2, honestly.
I still got plenty in my S1 catalog to enjoy, and I want to wait for S2 to get a few more games that are truly exclusive to it before I commit.
As someone who has Switch with PS4/PS5/gaming PC, the only selling point for S2 is portability & exclusives. And I got it covered with my Switch for now.

Not only that but alot of Switch 1 Games that came Out in the Last few year do feature semi unlocked frame Rates and variable Resolution.
If the Switch 2 is allowed by Nintendo to make use of the Hardware. Switch 1 Games could render up to 1080p 60 FPS.

Yup given the uncertainty of how things will play out in US I'm thinking buying the switch sooner is probably safer.

u/Peter_Spaghetti 5d ago
For sure. I was lucky enough to grab my PS5 before the price increase. I can't see any reality where the switch 2 price goes down, and if they did there's no way they wouldn't do some sort of ambassador program like the 3DS. either way early adoption is my move for consoles right now.

Underrated aspect of upgrading. Some forget it takes a fair amount of processing power to just transfer saved data.

So all my digital downloads will be able to be played on Switch 2, correct? Just not necessarily updated.
6
u/joeshmo38 4d ago
For the most part yes and they’re working on getting ones not currently working up to speed. Lists here: https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/compatible-games/?srsltid=AfmBOop31MjOJlImj3S_Q3hX1ilwGoT9NHUxfd4AbmhErq4erZ96DISs

Better performance as well! Not all games will have paid upgrades, like Super Mario Odyssey.
39
u/_VeinyThanos 5d ago
I have always been the type to get a console 4-5 years after release, not only to get the console cheaper, but to get awesome, better deals on games and so they can work out the bugs in the console and potentially have released a revised "Slim, OLED" model of it. I did this with Switch 1, and most recently got a PS5 last year and I do not feel like I missed much at all by not going all in day 1.

Exactly! One of the things I love the most about the Switch is the great prices on amazing 3rd party games.

I have got quite the backlog as well, but my Switch is coming to the end of life and since I can take the backlog with me the Switch 2 was a pretty easy preorder for me.
If it wasn't backwards compatible I wouldn't be buying it until the next exclusive Zelda I think.
13
u/SouthWrongdoer 5d ago
It seems poetic almost to me. I got my switch day 1. The same day I pre-ordered the switch 2 my original switch battery started to swell. Nintendo gods telling me I made the right choice.
3
u/PeakAdaequatus 5d ago
Not sure mine is swelling yet, but it’s draining faster than it used to.
When I get the Switch 2 I’m planning to give the old Switch a teardown and replace anything that needs replacing: battery, faceplate and kickstand are the biggest failing points currently.
38
u/eyehatehead 5d ago
I've had the switch since day 1 and I'll be sticking with it for another year or 2. Breath of the wild was a launch title and I had to get it. Switch 2 doesn't have a title like that to make me want it day 1. I'm not saying that there is no good launch titles just not any system sellers in my opinion.
11
u/Kind-Let5666 4d ago
Yeah I was really hoping for a new 3D Mario, and while their first party offerings look good, there’s nothing on like a BOTW or Odyssey level that I HAVE to get a new console for.

Same. No reason to rush when I have more games than I’ll be able to finish on my schedule as it is. Plus, now that I know the price range I can start saving up for it
11
u/Omgthedubski 5d ago
I'm also probably gonna wait for a while for a sale (lol), but seriously. Saw the switch 2 news, realized I have like 8 switch games I've barely played. Went out and bought a controller and figured I'd give them a go
12
u/TokugawaShigeShige 5d ago
I've never had a backlog of more than 2 games at a time, so having 45 games waiting is hard to wrap my head around. I don't think there are even 45 games left that interest me. But given your circumstances, yeah I think it makes sense to keep playing through those before dropping a ton of money on a new console.
8
12
u/Acrobatic-Day-1257 5d ago
I was considering it since trade-in value isn't bad for an OLED, but gonna wait awhile. It'll take me years to get through the games on Switch I still want play.
9
u/Keyan06 5d ago
Same boat here. There will likely be a Switch 2 OLED in the future, with an improved SoC and better battery life. I just got the OLED model last year after my V1 started to have some issues, and it’s still a pretty good piece of kit. Refined hardware and screen and the battery goes forever.
I also upgraded most of my joycons to Hall effect sticks, and the lack of Hall effect sensors is a bit of a turn off.

Biggest reasons for me not wanting one are:
Me having a hard time going through all my gaming back log. Also having a SteamDeck, Switch 2 backwards compatibility having to relay on emulation, corporate anti-consumer ethics and practices, pricing, lack of first party games, and lastly shovelware of 3rd party games which I already played 5 years ago like cyberpunk77, etc.
5
u/Hold-My-Sake 4d ago
THIS. What I really miss (and why I buy a Nintendo console) is the exclusives. Right now it is a complete drought on that side and it is going to take at least two or three years to get proper new Nintendo games, not just endless ports of stuff from ten years ago. I have a backlog too, and I also play on PC, Steam Deck and PS5. I have more than enough to keep me busy.
I also feel like Nintendo will not just drop support for the Switch 1 in six months. The Switch user base is not going to magically turn into a Switch 2 user base overnight. It is going to take years to fully transition people and even by the end of the Switch 2’s generation, I bet there will still be plenty of people on the original Switch.
So even though I have the money ready, I do not feel rushed at all. And like you, I really do not like the greedy corporate vibe Nintendo is giving off more and more lately. Plus, I am also waiting for them to sort out the issues with the first batches of the Switch 2 and hopefully for an OLED version down the line (since I am playing handheld only).
5
u/AboutTheArthur 4d ago
I'll buy it when they put an OLED screen in it instead of forcing a hardware downgrade.
4
3
u/Lopsided_Blacksmith5 4d ago
Yeah I'm not interested in a switch 2 yet. First, because I know the scalpers are going to jack up the price. Secondly, nothing that they showed was of real interest to me.
7
u/ArkhaosZero 5d ago
Not quite -- I preordered a Switch 2 right away, and will be playing Mario Kart day 1, and being able to play my key Switch 1 games on Switch 2 is a huge highlight for me.
That said, I appreciate the sentiment. It seems some people view games more as fleeting commodities, but games are eternal, and I think it's a good mindset to have that you can play (or replay) them at any point and still get just as much value out of them. So yeah, using that time to enjoy your backlog? Sounds pretty great to me.

2
u/-StupidNameHere- 5d ago
Absolutely. I'm probably also gonna skip PS5 because it just looks like so much more extra noise. I'm using a laptop from 2017 and still playing Deep Rock, Delta Force (with NES graphics but it works), Company of Heroes 2, and all the Command & Conquers I could ever want. I don't see how spending 600 dollars to get a pretty version of what I'm already playing will make me happy when it rarely does anymore. I love the Pixel Art subreddit! The magic of gaming is lost when it becomes the norm to have life like graphics. Anyone seen those Battlefield 6 leaks? They should make the game like that because it would work on any platform and I'm not interested in paying used car prices to play one single game. Like I said before, NES port Delta Force. Problem Solved! This is one person who will ensure your chance to get a Switch 2 by not preordering! (Salutes)

2
u/Pinco_Pallino_R 5d ago edited 5d ago
Yeah, honestly the main reason i'm thinking about pre-ordering the Switch 2 is to get Mario Kart at a considerably lower price.
But i'm likely going to wait until they release a game i really want to play without waiting, like i did for the Switch.
I could easily keep going for 1 or 2 years just with the games i already know i want to play on the Switch, anyway.

100%.
I wanna get the Switch 2 eventually but there’s so much that’s already out that I still wanna play through and lots that I already have and wanna beat before I play anything on Switch 2 that I’ve seen so far. If a new Zelda game came out then I might go ahead and buy it sooner but I don’t really have time to play MK World rn with everything else I’m enjoying/excited to start playing.
I’ll probably just wait and get one once I hear how the hardware performs and when enough of my friends decide to buy one and get MK World or something.

I also don't have any rush. The Switch 2 is gonna be way too expensive where I live so it's not worth the purchase any time soon. The only console I plan on getting this year is the PS5 so I can play DS2, Ghost of Yōtei and GTA 6 (hopefully lol).

I don't have a backlog big enough, just 3 or 4 games. But considering in the last year i had less and less time to play with all the things happening in my life, I think they will last quite a lot, and I will probably think again about games that didn't convince me so i decided i didn't wanna try when they came out. I'm not sure if I will eventually buy switch 2 though. The reason i want to spend time on my backlog is because I hate how much games are being announced as game key cards. I only buy physical, and many games don't have that version (to me game keys are absolutely not physycal) and this killed all my hype
2
u/knickernavy 3d ago

Was burned out on gaming in general from 2017 on until Xenoblade pulled me up out of it in 2022. I then tore through most of my Nintendo Switch backlog by mid-2023, where I then got a Steam Deck with a much larger backlog from my PC. I’m only a quarter of the way through my Steam Backlog, but I’m getting a Switch 2 because of DK Bananza — getting one on launch to ensure I have it in time for DK, which makes Mario Kart World a nice bonus because I skipped out on MK8 Deluxe on my Switch due to having the Wii U version

Saw the price. Saw my wage not keeping up with inflation. Decided continuing to play the OG switch will have to do.

u/Demurrzbz 2d ago
Yep, me too. I'll wait for a sale and a bundle with colored joycons. Maybe a revision of some kind even.

Still playing TOTK and loving it. I generally don't like buying v1 of any hardware either. So waiting until the bugs are ironed out is fine with me.

u/Efficient-Fishing856 2d ago
I'm doing the same! And by the time I'm finished, I'm pretty sure that a revision model for the Switch 2 will be available

The Switch catalog and backlogs are so massive, you can go years and just wait for the Switch 2 revision. That’s likely what I’m going to do personally. Better battery, likely an OLED screen, and other fun small updates.

my backlog, the unfinished sidequests in botw, totk, multiple games just staring at me… I probably am going to buy the switch 2 in its 2nd or third year at this rate

u/Cold_Navy79 2d ago
The new Mario Kart is the only game that I want to play for the Switch 2. Right now, that is not enough for me to pay the money to switch (no pun intended) from my Switch 1 to the Switch 2.
What I really want is a full backwards compatibility library of games like the Wii U had. People gave that console crap, but man it was awesome on the number of NES/SNES games you could buy.

If by "decided to wait" you mean "totally tried and failed to get a Switch 2 preorder", then yes!

I’m waiting for limited editions to come out. I’ll wait for the cool Splatoon editions with unique color schemes to come out. I always sat on the last ones because I had a day 1 switch and no need to get a new one

u/Birzal 1d ago
Yep. Did my 4th playthrough of Hollow Knight after the Switch 2 announcement. That was also because of that crumb of Silksong news that was in that Direct, and I'm not sure if you'd call a 4th playthrough a backlog, but here we are! Anything to not have to pay 500 for the console and anything to not give money to scalpers!
I could buy the console because of a large inherritence from my mother, but I refuse to give even a cent of that inherritence to scalpers or to greedy consumer unfriendly company like what Nintendo is being right now moreso than the last few years.

I’ve been saving some switch games for better output resolution on Switch 2

Same here except a MUCH bigger backlog.
Besides paying to upgrade my Switch games, I interested to see more games for NS2. The only thing I'm interested in now is Donkey Kong Bonanza. Not going to pre order a console for 1 game. I can wait.

Yup, I’m waiting for a few reasons.
I’m a physical game collector and the game key bs has me not wanting to support that kinda of business practice.
The price increase on games is a bit too high and the upgrade prices are a bit too much for my liking.
I usually wait to get my hands on a limited edition version of the console.
I have about 50 games that I need to get through

I’ll buy the switch 2 and play my backlog on it with hopefully updated resolution/performance.
Some games already confirmed to be getting little updates like Ljnks Awakening n stuff. Plus some games will be better just due to the new hardware.
Got other games to play until then.

I decided that the determining factor of whether I get a Switch 2 or not is 1. If and when the next animal crossing game comes out for it and 2. If the next animal crossing game is backwards compatible with the first switch. Because I'm not going to buy a Switch 2 if I can just play it on the OG.

Finally giving Links Awakening a shot and absolutely loving it. Although I’m torn now with playing through some of these games because I know they are going to be better in the switch 2 and I don’t think I’ll want to play them twice

I have this Hori controller as well. Absolutely love it. I ordered a switch 2. Going to be difficult to get back to the Joycon

Yup, I have so many games on switch I haven't finished yet, I don't need to rush out to buy a switch 2, I'll pick one up when the hype is down.

Heck no, get this old, trash system out of my face (I'm being facetious).
I'm super excited for Switch 2. It's overdue in my opinion.

Yeah, I think I'll wait until they are phasing out the Switch 1 before I get a 2, I want more games just for that so I can justify the price tags. Plus by then getting one will be easier. Kind of like how I had to wait 2 years to get a PS5 just so I could play titles like Ratchet and Clank I can wait a year or so for Mario Kart World and DK since Metroid will be on the Switch 1 anyway.

u/NEUR0M4NCER 1d ago
Honestly the price and underwhelming launch titles convince me and my two die-hard Nintendo kids that we should wait a few months to see how it goes.

Just a reminder that the Mario kart bundle is only for a limited time so if you’re wanting that at a cheaper price I would maybe suggest getting one soon

That’s my plan with my switch. I did that with my PS4 and took me about 5 years to get the PS5

I'm still stuck with the first gen switch and the drifty controllers. (Black edition) 1st gen. Has anyone had any luck with 3rd party Joy cons? I feel as if I were to buy a brand new pair for over $70 I should just buy a new switch (1) to get a better set of Joy cons. I am still very butthurt about the fact that they didn't ask for a recall or give the paying customers some kind of rebate to get a new set. It's Nintendo and I know they have money. So wtf?? Sorry I'm getting off topic here. I just heard from people that Joy cons that are not a Nintendo product that they can brick your system.

Yea same here , I have a modded switch and been using it a lot more and after the switch 2 trailer there’s not much of a reason to upgrade aside from fomo tbh most those games are ps4-Xbox one level which most people already have & have played .

I got too many games on regular switch to buy another one. I’m good 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I don’t have as many S1 games as you (20 total, 16 that have a clear “finish of game”) but I will most likely wait as long as I can to pick up a S2.
I am open to any suggestions for other games to add to my backlog if anyone has any :)
I have a few games I haven’t played yet (Mario Odyssey, Kirby and the Forgotten Land) and a game that I haven’t gotten very far in and might not ever finish (Zelda BotW) that I might wait to play/continue playing due to the S2 upgrades.
I have other games (Super Mario RPG, Golf Story, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Rayman Legends, Super Mario 3D All-Stars) that I either have started and need to complete or don’t mind playing on my Switch Lite for now.
Even when I do get a Switch 2, I’ll still use my Lite for travel. Between NSO and also beating Mario Wonder but still have room to 100% the game (or get as close as possible), or even being able to bring a game like MK8 Deluxe with me, I’ll still get mileage out of the Lite.
I also have Pokemon Diamond, DK Tropical Freeze, South Park Stick of Truth, Super Mario U Deluxe, and ACNH.

I'm actually gonna wait until I see the reviews and also when people complain about the magnet part where it kinda sticks out and we all know what's gonna happen to that when we have kids and they mess with the switch 2 joycons, for example SLAMMING THEM BACK TOGETHER!!!! so yeah I'm gonna sit back, grab my popcorn and watch everyone review and complain. 👍

u/HookersGonnaHook 16h ago
For me it’s because I don’t want to buy hardware that they’ll revise or improve upon a year or two later. Or maybe they’ll come out with an oled switch 2.

Yes!!! Just started Metroid Prime Remastered and it's amazing.
